Have you read Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea books Amelia? They are perfect YA fantasy. Also Philip Pullman's books.

Robin McKinley's The blue sword and The hero and the crown are great.

Also anything by Diana Wynne Jones but especially Howl's moving castle.
