It make me think regarding romance novels, that one could write one with class and taste, let alone including intelligence and witty banter.

The character development of course is in a different style than today, being less familiar but still Jane Austen and her man were able to capture the scene and so with simplicity. I have not found a book equal to it for clever, real characters with faults as well as finery.

I find it a little bit annoying that the marvelous Jane Austen has been hi-jacked by romance readers. Of course they are wonderful romances, but they are so much more. They are marvelous character studies and faithfully re-create an entire universe in a small space. And ulitmately, they are about the economic realities of marriage in a world in which women had to carefully negotiate their way to security when they had so few options. That being said, the romance between Eliazbeth Benett and Mr. Darcy is plain irressitable. Read more, read them all. They are treasures.

Exactly. Hijacked is a good word, for unless it is pilfered correctly it merely waters down the original.

When I think of Austen's work it not romance that is forefront but literature. Poeticly and harshly described people, ingenious dialog, etc.

I could go on all day, but I must back to writing with me.
Thank you for the comment.
