In the hope of encouraging the start of reading/discussion groups in philosophy, I propose this thread for anyone who will comment on the book Essays in Pragmatism, a compilation of William James' writings by Alburey Castell, a Professor at Wooster (OH) College.
I admit I recently finished the book, but I'd be very grateful to learn of others opinions about it specifically, or in general about James himself and or Pragmatism. For anyone who just likes to have someone to read with, I'll read it again.
I also encourage others who would have interest in similar discussion of a different book to open a new thread and get other similar discussions started simultaneously.
Pragmatism is very interesting as a topic, I think, even though I am appalled by the atheism expressed so frequently by James in other writings. Certainly he was very smart, but I think his inclusion by Encyclopedia Britannica in their Great Books series (for Principles of Psychology) reflects more EB's effort to promote socialism and secular humanism than the merit of James.
Could anyone please suggest Castell's motive for inserting the chapter "Conclusions on Varieties of Religious Experience" in the middle of the book, and in front of the chapter "What Pragmatism Means." To me this seems atheism running entirely amuck.
If you don't have this book, don't buy it. Look for something else on pragmatism and please let us know your thoughts.
