Morning, just have begun "Mothers of Invention, Women of the SlaveHolding South in the American Civil War", by Drew Gilpin Faust. Should be a fairly quick read as it is just over 250 pages. More on this volume to follow.

Welcome! I saw on the "meet and greet" thread that you have an interest in the Civil War. I'm currently reading the new Grant biography by Ron Chernow and am finding it fascinating. Of course, it has tons about the civil war. Have you read it?

Interested to follow your reading!

Hello, japaul22!!
Nope, haven't started it yet, but I have it here on the shelf. I love the way Ron Chernow writes, IMHO, he gives you all the details, but stays in a very readable fashion. Are you noticing this style of writing with his new bio of Grant?

US Grant, was a very interesting man. Did you know that although he was diagnosed with a very seriously debilitating form of cancer, he was able to stick it out and finish his memoir before he passed? He was that kind of tough guy who could almost Will himself into finishing tasks.
There is a very interesting picture of Grant, bundled up in coats and blankets, sitting on the porch of his home, writing his memoir. The picture is very telling, as I think, you can see just how very sick he was near the end. Fascinating man, one of Abraham Lincoln's quotes about Grant is indicative of his tenacity; Lincoln said, when asked to move or remove Grant, something along that line...."I can't spare the man, he Fights"....
I think that was the perfect description of Grant; Lincoln was really good at that sort of thing....accurately summing up folks and making decisions about character and ability on the fly....

Looking forward to reading this book ( I may start it next, although I have an historical novel by Alison Weir on my radar as well).

Thanks so much for welcoming me to the group....Trying to make some changes in my reading and writing habits. I'm hoping this is a good place to get a great start on that.

Welcome to the group!
I've joined a bit less than one month ago and love it here. I'll hope you'll like it as much as I do.

>3 TheYankeeIrregular: Yes, Chernow's style is very readable but very detailed. This is a long book!

Chernow eludes to Grant's end of life and his autobiography in the introduction and I assume he'll be more detailed at the end of the book. And, I've gotten to that quote by Lincoln too. It was said in comparison to the Generals working on the eastern front (The Army of the Potomac).

I'll be curious to hear what you think of the book whenever you get to it!

Okay; well that gives me a reason to move Chernow's book on US Grant up to the top of my "To Be Read" List. I must admit though, it's already a fairly long list. I keep thinking of how I will ever read all the books I own if I continue to buy more? I must either become a speed reader, or stop with the book buying....Not sure how that one will end up, hoping all of us bibliophiles live to be really, really old so we can continue our Reading Lists!!

Oh, and Thanks to Chlorine for the welcome. I'm glad to find this group and this website; it is wonderful to talk books, I could do it all night and day, every day.

>6 TheYankeeIrregular:, >7 dchaikin: Yes, joining this group will only make your TBR list longer and longer . . .

But I consider that a good thing overall!
