I have contacted Monkey and offered to set up Club Read 2018. She has passed the baton, so to speak. Those of us on Club Read extend our thanks to her for all she have done to organize the group and we hope she will soon be back among us!

I plan to post the new group sometime in early December. Members can join whenever they like

If anyone would like to post their thoughts about changes, what threads you look forward to, what you'd like to see that isn't here, or other questions, criticisms or concerns, you can do so here in public or by a private message on my profile page.

----

For those who don't know the history of Club Read: CR was created for the 2009 reading year as an alternative to the large challenge groups which operated under a numerical goal—a group of readers who would journal their reading in whatever manner they liked. And yes, I valued all manner of diversity in the readership and, as a kind of experiment, I seeded the group by personal invitation for a couple of weeks before I opened it to the public (and what I think about that experiment now is another conversation :-).

It has never been nor aspired to be a large group; it's membership has always fallen between 100-200 members. I know we've lost members for various reasons over the years; which I think is to be expected. And many of us have at times had life get in the way,

CR has hosted a wonderful group of readers each year, both veterans of years before and newbies, and the group seems to work best with readers who seek back and forth conversation not just an audience. Thankfully, we have not been reduced to "like" buttons & emojis!

We welcome your comments.

Thanks for setting up next year's group, and thanks to Monkey for the time she's put into it up till now!

Thanks also for the bit of history. Nine years of existence is impressive.

I love the group and will certainly rejoin next year as usual, though, naturally, make no promises as to how much I'll actually be around. I always start out with the best of intentions (as with most of us) but then...... ah well. Lol.

My participation in Club Read has fallen off precipitously this year, but I'll be back in 2018. I'll be more active here next year, as I've decided to not participate in the 75 Books group in 2018.

Despite my level of reading and levels of participation I am always keen to stay with this group. Through thick or thin, right? :)

I’ll be here, Lois, and, hopefully, more active. I always read threads, I just don’t always comment.

I'm in as well. I'm back from a hiatus-- all the way back in June, work became overwhelming. I'm happy to report that my job has changed and I have more time now to have a private life.

Thank you to Monkey for running the group this year and to Lois for keeping it going for next year! 2017 was my 6th year in Club Read and though I participate in several other groups, I consider Club Read my "home" on LT.

Looking forward to continued book discussions and recommendations!

Thank you for taking over for another year of CR. And a thank you to Monkey for everything she has done.

This was my 5th year at Club Read and like >10 japaul22: I regard it as "home" on LT. Count me in for 2018!

This will be my first time! I am getting my reading list together now. Just coming off teaching a class on Young Adult literature, so plan to read (and study) "old adult" literature. Thank you for setting this up!

>13 nohrt4me2: OOOOO, Jean, cool!! How about mid or meso-adult reading?

I think I'm going to chase down a few of the members from earlier years who have drifted away and see if I can lure them back.

LOVE this group so much. It feels like chatting about books with a bunch of good buddies.

Thanks to all who silently administer for the group in the background.

I'm looking forward to the new reading year - I've only been on Club Read for two years, but I've enjoyed it so far.

Thanks to Monkey and Lois for the time they invest in keeping the wheels turning for us!

Thanks to both of you, for starting this thing and for keeping it going! I've found this group suits me wonderfully well as a nice, low-pressure place to catalog my reading, to post my thoughts about it, to hear what others might have to say about it, and sometimes to get into interesting discussions. I admit, I do often feel like I'm not posting enough on others' threads, although I do try to at least skim through to see what everybody's been reading. But I'm always pleased when people stop by mine and want to chat. Plus, just taking the time to think of what I want to say about the books I read here has helped me appreciate them more, I think.

Anyway, I will definitely be on board for 2018!

I don't post here much, am perpetuallly a month behind, but I do appreciate having a place to mention my non-1001 reading. Thanks Monkey and Avaland! Also, a thank you to AnnieMod for keeping up the "What are you reading" and SassyLassy for her wonderful questions!

Yes, thanks to AnnieMod & SassyLassy for their work during the year. Do the two of you wish to continue or would you like to pass the tasks on to someone else?

>23 avaland:

If someone else wants to take over the "What are you reading now" threads, I will bow out. If there are no volunteers, I can do it again next year - I enjoyed coming up with a new way to introduce the thread:)

Should have mentioned that of course I will be in Club Read 2018 --- thanks so much avaland for taking it on. Next year will be a more productive reading year.

>15 avaland:: Old Adult Literature starts with protagonists age 50 and up. I have some prescriptive criteria about what I think belongs in the canon of OA Lit. We'll see how it gels and how the books on the list stack up. I have a nice reading list, anyhow, though finding books with older protagonists takes some digging.

Maybe I'll end up with something like Susan Sontag's "Notes on Camp" and become FAMOUS! Hahaha.

>27 nohrt4me2: I love this idea, and can recommend The Waiting Game by Bernice Rubens--old folks' home with shady goings-on, wonderfully written. There is also Muriel Spark's Memento Mori, and Kent Haruf has a couple of great books with elderly protagonists front and centre.

I'm starting with Macbeth and King Lear.

I'll put together the new group page the weekend of the 16th & 17th. The site might be listed as "private" briefly while it is under construction (although I think I'll get it done in one sitting).

I will create an introductions thread and a message board thread, as has been the tradition.

Do we have someone for the "best of" quarterly threads? the what are you reading now threads? first option goes to those who are currently doing the threads...

The NEW 10th Anniversary Club Read 2018 group is up on the boards. Please go visit and make your thread but come back here and finish out the year with us!

I've added a message board and introduction threads and a "best of" for the previous year (which will be a deliberate redundancy of the one that will close out Club Read 2017)

If I've forgotten anything, please drop me a note. I think we have volunteers for all the standard community threads, thank you. Suggestions for 2018 should probably go on the 2018 message board.

Have joined the 2018 group, and I am looking forward to following everyone's reading and adding lots and lots of books to my wishlist, which like other readers here I really need. (NOT).

Thank you so much to our volunteers for keeping this going!

>27 nohrt4me2: If you read SF - try Elizabeth Moon's Remnant Population. Possibly also John Scalzi's Old Man's War and the rest of that series - but it starts with a rejuvenation and I haven't actually read it yet to see if the protagonist is an old man in a young man's body or just gets young again (very different viewpoints).

I'll be in Club Read again next year - this works better for me than the numerical challenges. I'd love more visitors, and actual conversations in my thread - I get some visitors, but usually just a comment rather than a conversation growing. Not sure how I can encourage those, though.

Don't forget to introduce yourselves on the Introduction thread in the 2018, even if you think everyone knows you. I'm keeping a user name/name/where from list/cheat sheet at the top of that thread for your reference.
