I've starred this thread and will follow along with the plans, but unfortunately I think it's unlikely that I'll be able to make the trip into NYC.

I *just* was on your thread, posting this link!

Selfishly, I hope your plans change :)

Id be interested.

Perhaps lunch at Housing Works Used Bookstore Cafe in Soho, just a few blocks from McNally Jackson (which also has a cafe) and a 15 minute walk south of Strandbooks?

Thanks to Katie for making me aware of this thread. I doubt I'll be able to make it, but I've starred this just in case so I can keep up with your plans.

A work thing has just opened up on the Thursday evening, and I could stay until Saturday and take the late train home that day, I think. Lunch would be great -- the Morgan also has its own cafe, incidentally, if we wanted to start there.

I'll wait a bit and see if we get any more interest. I know Darryl had a few people in Club Read he thought might be interested... I might see if there is a General Message type thread over there and post the link to this one.

I'm still waiting the proper moment to broach this with my soulmate. She won't come along, but...

Août 21, 2017, 10:35 am

Well, I'm The Worst Organizer in the history of ever. Sorry all. Life is getting away from me, and recent events in the US haven't helped.

I hope some people are still interested in getting together. If no one objects, I'd like to just lay out a plan and people can take it or leave it or participate for whatever part they are able. I hope that's not too dictatorial, but I fear I won't have time to moderate a whole discussion about when and where to meet, what to do, etc.

I really want to see the exhibit on Henry James at the Morgan Library (http://www.themorgan.org/exhibitions/henry-james), because I am planning to read The Master soon. So I'd propose this:

11:00 - Meet at the Morgan Cafe (Madison b/t 36th and 37th) - you don't need to pay museum admission to access it - for coffee and introductions
11:30? 12:00? - Visit the museum for those interested
1:30 - Lunch at Park Avenue Tavern (39th and Park) I am not married to the idea of this place, but it seemed innocuous enough to appeal to a variety of tastes and able to accommodate a potentially large-ish group
2:30? 3:00? - Elizabeth had suggested the Housing Works used bookstore and/or McNally Jackson and/or The Strand, so if people want to do some bookshop browsing, we could head downtown.

So there's an outline. I am not a rigid planner and like to play things by ear, but I also know some people may not want to devote a whole day to this, so I want to provide some idea of where some LTers might be be and when... I'm also happy to PM my cell phone number so if you are interested but also want to play it by ear, you can text me to find out what's up the day of.

Anyone still in?

Août 21, 2017, 3:50 pm

I'm in! And the above is the mark of a True Organizer - great ideas. Looks like I'll meet you at the lunch spot. I love the Morgan but can't make it that early. THANKS Katie for getting all this together!

Août 21, 2017, 4:18 pm

I'm still a maybe. I'd be taking the train, could arrive in NYC by 11am, but that's awfully early on this end so it'd more likely be noon and I'd meet you all at the Morgan.

Août 21, 2017, 4:27 pm

I'm a likely, and I'll be accompanied by Gig, a friend and fellow reader (though not an LTer), known on occasion to my wife and me as "the other grandma." Can't confirm it absolutely. Probably be a last-minute decision.

The Strand would be a favored destination for us. The Morgan Library not so much.

Sounds like a great plan, Katie. Thanks for taking on the organization.

I think we'll probably meet you at the Morgan Cafe, join the group going to the Henry James exhibit and probably join for lunch. We'll be staying in Connecticut and want to go to the Neue Galerie that day too so we will skip the bookstores I think. (Did I REALLY say that?!?)

I would appreciate it if you could PM your cell phone # so we have a way to contact each other on the day. I'll PM you mine.

I've become a definite. Two places I've been wanting to get to: the High Line and Brooklyn Bridge Park (the garden director spoke at a local conference), and if I don't do it soon, then I'll have to wait until next year. So I'll be in NYC for the weekend, hoping for cooperative weather. Anyone who's up for a long walk is welcome to join me. I'll meet you all at the Morgan Cafe, play the rest by ear.

29Chatterbox
Août 27, 2017, 8:49 pm

I will probably be there. I'd love to go to the Morgan Library, and lunch, but will probably have to pass on the bookstores (don't tempt me too much!) and take the train home late that afternoon.

Only question is, did you double check that we can get to the café without paying an entrance? I know it's past the main entrance desk, and sometimes they don't want to let people walk past that point, even though the atrium with the café is only just immediately beyond it, and there aren't any exhibition galleries in between. They are among the most draconian nincompoops I know. Last time I was there was with my ex, about 18 mos ago, and the guards told him he was staring too closely at an exhibition case (it was the Hemingway exhibition case.) He was trying to read a label! *eyes roll* But it's also a fabulous small museum...

>28 qebo: I'd be tempted to do the High Line if my ankle is up to it, after lunch, or some midday food of some kind.

30katiekrug
Août 27, 2017, 10:56 pm

>28 qebo: - Excellent, Katharine! Look forward to meeting you.

>29 Chatterbox: - Hi Suz! The museum's website says one needn't pay admission to access the cafe or shop, so we should be okay. Look forward to seeing you :-)

What a fine accumulations of readers we will have!

For those of you who haven't been there, the Housing Works bookshop and cafe is a lovely place, in addition to having lots of books.

>21 ELiz_M: Jim and I are also members, so if people want to see something there instead of bookshopping, or if people will be here in NYC another day, we can get those $5 tickets as well.

>28 qebo: It will be a delight to see you again, Katherine. If my foot is up to it, I may like to join you on the trip to the Brooklyn Bridge Park, if you don't mind. Just a warning about the High Line: it's become disgustingly popular, hence crowded, although lovely.

>29 Chatterbox: Suz, we seem to be the walking wounded. Jim is suffering from a foot thing too. Good thing we don't read with our toes.

32ffortsa
Août 28, 2017, 2:42 pm

There are too many people in New York. There I was, reading under the trees in Union Square, and found myself having to move to another table because of two really interesting conversations going on at nearby tables that were just barely too quiet to follow. Oh, the annoyance of insufficient eavedropping!

33qebo
Août 28, 2017, 3:00 pm

>31 ffortsa: disgustingly popular
I don't get to NYC more than once a year or so... It's not difficult, but it's not spontaneous day trip either, especially if want to pack enough in to justify the time on the train. So my standards aren't as refined as they might otherwise be. And crowds are kind of a novelty, add to the entertainment. I'm merely hoping for not pouring rain.

>29 Chatterbox:, >32 ffortsa: I'll be in NYC Friday afternoon - Sunday afternoon, general plan is to walk around and pretend RL doesn't exist for a couple days. I'm fine w/ or w/o company, and it'll be nice to see both of you. I've been largely absent from LT this year, too many other things vying for attention.

Excellent; sounds as if this will be a good crowd! Speaking of crowds, Judy's warnings re crowds on the High Line have dampened my enthusiasm slightly, but I'll play it as it goes -- see how my ankle bone is going and weather and all that other stuff. I may just keep my after-lunch options open.

Thanks for checking with the Morgan, Katie. I'd like to see the Henry James exhibit, but budgetary constraints are what they are!

Okay, so I think I have the updated list correct. If I have left you off, please give a shout (and forgive me)!

Katiekrug (Katie) - confirmed + Mr. Katie (likely)
ELiz_M (Liz) - confirmed
Vivians (Vivian) - confirmed
Rebarelishesreading (Reba) + Mr. Reba - confirmed
qebo (Katharine) - confirmed

ffortsa (Judy) - confirmed + friend, Ruta
Magiciansnephew (Jim) - likely

Feel free to leave a note here as to where/when you expect to turn up, as I know not everyone can commit to the whole shebang. I'm not sure I'll have a complete list of who is planning on lunch (around 1:30 at Park Avenue Tavern) but I'll just call and ask them to set up a table for 10 or so. It'll be under my name, FYI.

Looking forward to it!

I'm pretty sure Jim will join us. I'm also planning on bringing a friend of mine, Ruta Casabianca, who will be moving back to New York as soon as the co-op board approves her. I'm sure she'll fit right in.

I'm not sure when we will get to the Morgan, but before lunch, of course. See you all then.

It happened! It happened! I only stayed until just after lunch, then I had to run, in order to pick up my stuff on the upper west side and get to Penn Station. The cops had blocked off 5th Ave and all access streets, due to a Labor Day parade (do NOT ask me why it was this weekend, as I have NO idea) and even at 3 p.m. or so it was still a mess. Took me nearly an hour to get to where I could pick up the subway and get north, so I missed the earlier train. Lots of fun, though! I hope the rest of the crowd opted for a bookstore or two??

58katiekrug

With apologies for the terrible photo. I would blame my husband's terrible photography skills, but we probably shouldn't have taken it in front of a brightly lit window!

Back row (l-r): Katie (katiekrug), Liz (ELiz_M), Jim (magiciansnephew), Reba (rebarelishesreading), Mr. Reba
Front row (l-r): Vivian (vivians), Suzanne (chatterbox), Ruta (friend of Judy), Katharine (qebo), Judy (ffortsa)

We had a great meet-up in New York yesterday, starting at the Morgan Library, where we convened in the cafe and had a nice chat. Then a few went to tour the library and others stayed to keep talking. We eventually moved a few blocks away for brunch and yet more conversation. It was very relaxed and low-key, and as usual when LTers get together (at least in my experience), it's like meeting old friends.

>63 Chatterbox: I had a couple hours to kill between the Brooklyn Bridge Park (which turned into something of an adventure because the subways were on a weekend construction schedule that was less than fully clear to the casual visitor) and the train home, so I went to the Museum of Mathematics, which is mostly interactive exhibits for kids, but also has a gift shop with an array of books rarely found in one place. I was seriously tempted, but knew that if I caved in to buy one, I'd end up with a dozen, and the prospect of adding weight to my baggage was sufficient deterrent.

>63 Chatterbox: As you know, Suzanne, since you were there, I didn't make it to the meet up. But I did get to a kind of bookstore: Goodwill. Found 17 books of sufficient interest to me to make me buy them. Spent $17 and change, less that a round trip bus ticket to NYC would have cost me.

But still, I would have liked to be there.
