The editor who rescued Anne Frank's Diary from the rejection pile, Judith Jones died August 2 at the age of 93. Her books include The Tenth Muse and The Pleasures of Cooking for One.

Former Notre Dame football coach Ara Parseghian died August 2 at the age of 94. He wrote Parseghian and Notre Dame Football.

Best known for his role in All Creatures Great and Small and as Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter franchise, actor Robert Hardy died August 3 at the age of 91. Interestingly enough, he was an expert on the English long bow and wrote Longbow: A Social and Military History.

Richard Gordon died 11 August 2017 age 95. His first book Doctor in the House was written aboard ship and was followed by many more. He got fed up with the genre but was persuaded to carrry on.

Shakespeare scholar Ann Jennalie Cook (aka Ann Cook Calhoun) died August 13 at the age of 82. Her husband Gerry Calhoun died in the same hospice on the same day. She was the author of the influential book The Privileged Playgoers of Shakespeare's London, 1576-1642.

Professor who dug up lost New York history, Leo Herskowitz died August 10 at the age of 92. His books include Tweed's New York, Courts and Law in Early New York and Wills of Early New York Jews.

Sci-fi author Brian Aldiss died August 19 at the age of 92. Some of his more popular books include Helliconia Spring and Non-Stop.

Polish playwright Janusz Glowacki died August 19 at the age of 78. His work includes Z Glowy, Good Night, Dzerzi and Hunting Cockroaches (a Play).

New Zealand rugby star Colin Meads died August 20 at the age of 81. His autobiography was titled simply Colin Meads.

Author Thomas Meehan wrote many books to accompany Broadway plays including Annie (An Annie Book) and Hairspray: The Complete Book and Lyrics. He died August 14 at the age of 88.

Gordon Williams died 20 August 2017. He wrote Straw Dogs which was made into a film. He also wrote From Scenes Like These which was short-listed for the inaugural Booker Prize in 1969 but was pipped at the post by Something to Answer For.

Sean O'Callaghan died 23rd August age 62. He was an IRA gunman but later changed sides. He wrote The Informer

Sally Fiber died 14th August age 81. She was brought up in a London pub and published her (or perhaps its) autobiography The Fitzroy: The Autobiography of a London Tavern in 1995.

Also Ernst Zündel died August 6th age 78. He was a neo-Nazi publisher who was prosecuted for Holocaust denial.

Horror film director Tobe Hooper died August 26 at the age of 74. He wrote Midnight Movie.

Childbirth specialist Dr. Marshall H Klaus died August 15 at the age of 90. His books include The Doula Book and Mothering the Mother.

Sister Mary David Totah OSB died August 28th 2017 age 60. She was Prioress of St Cecilia's Abbey on the Isle of Wight and wrote Confirmation: the Spirit of Christ and also anthology "Walled About With God" in 2005.

John Sturrock died August 15th (Feast of the Assumption) 2017 age 87. He had a spell at TLS and later at London Review of Books. He was a reviewer and translator. His own works included The Word from Paris.
