Great challenge - I see a couple of my country-peeps on your list, so looking forward to hearing what you think of Astrid Lindgren (actually, if you don't like Lindgren, don't let me know...) and Per Olov Enquist.

I can't pretend to be the greatest authority on children's literature, but my experience of Pippi on the page was a vast improvement over the late 80's American adaptation that haunted the television sets of my childhood -- I will probably complete the series later this year. Selma Lagerlöf and Nils are still in the lead for me, but I'm looking forward to more Lindgren and Långstrump. As far as Per Olov Enquist is concerned, I'm afraid to report I wasn't exactly overwhelmed (but then I find good historical fiction hard to come by.) I'm not sure that I've read his best work so much as his one most Anglocentric one -- but so it goes sometimes in translation.

Pippi on the page is wonderful, as is the Swedish TV-series, although I have a childhood love for that one and it may be too dated for today's audience.
I read Enquist at Uni and enjoyed his writing, but the enjoyment may have been related to the discussions that surrounded the reading. I will have to give him a try again.
And, Selma is just about untouchable, so there's that. ;)

Q1 Update: After an aggressive opening to the reading year I've already begun to break down several of the original categories -- which does have the upside of pushing me in some unanticipated directions. Hopefully, I will restrain my intake a little for the rest of the year, downshift my American literature gear, and put some thought into the best directions to expand my historical survey.

Q2 Update: Much happier with my categories now that I've made a few changes to the fiction challenges. Less happy with my progress in my history reading but I am otherwise satisfied with the way my non-fiction reading for the year is proceeding.

It appears I skipped my Q3 update but, as of the 10th, I've closed out all my categories for the year :) There are still 20 odd books left to reach 500 for 2017 but I am happy that the direction of my reading has been quietly guided by this challenge (the first couple months before I joined were a bit unwieldy and Americentric.)

Regular poetry and travel reading has been on the slim side for me in the past so the added emphasis this year was probably my best move. Also, focusing on rereading some favorites proved to be a big plus this year -- dug me out of a few rough patches. I'm still not thrilled with the breadth of my history reading but 2018 is just around the corner.

I certainly plan to read less in the future (although I've threatened this before) but I hope to come back with fewer but well-considered categories next year.

Congrats! I love skimming through all the books you've covered -- it seems like a fantastic year with a lot of excellent material, and the format is so clean to look at. (I love the revisited & best-in-category icons!)

Your British fiction category reminds me that I really need to get back to some of the Walter Scott I've been hoarding. I had intended to read Redgauntlet this year but never found the time.

Persuasion is hovering near the top of my "borrow from my parents" list -- glad to see it was your best in category!

Thanks, all :)

pammab: Had to keep things tidy just to keep track of everything ;) Without giving myself time for reviews I thought the least I can do is offer a few guiding ☼'s for the year.

rabbitprincess: There's a lot of Scott out there to hoard -- Redgauntlet hasn't even been even been on my radar (until now.) Persuasion is my favorite Austen, after Pride and Prejudice, and saved an otherwise thin category.
