My favorite reads published in 2016. Categorized by nonfiction and fiction, listed in the order I read them.

Nonfiction:
Evicted
When Breath Becomes Air
Lab Girl
The Hour of Land
Upstream

Fiction:
Grief is the Thing with Feathers
Commonwealth
French Rhapsody

(Included one book read in 2015, but published in 2016. Did not include any books read in 2016 that will be published in 2017.)

I will occasionally post thoughts on books read. I am big on "talking" about books, but not so much on structured reviews.

I really loved my first read, so here you go:

A week in and I finally finished my first book of 2017, A Piece of the World. It is a novel based on the Andrew Wyeth painting Christina's World and written by the author of Orphan Train. I have long been fascinated by the Wyeths and enjoyed Orphan Train. I highly recommend this engaging novel, which will be published on February 21.

That sounds intriguing - the Wyeth painting is certainly one that invites a longer look.

Two of your nonfiction top five were on my favorites list - Evicted and the surprising moving Lab Girl.

Wyeth to me is mostly just a name and some grass. I don't know much about him and even had to look up the painting. Interesting about A Peice of the world.

2. Remember Me as a Time of Day (no touchstones)

I bought this collection of poetry when I was in Asheville last May. It is the work of 12 women from a poetry circle that takes place at Malaprop's Bookstore. I read about half of it while in Asheville and then it got lost in a pile of books upon my return.

One of my goals for early 2017 is to finish a number of the many books I have started. I abandon them not because I don't like them, but because something else catches my eye (I have nearly 500 unread books in my house, after all.) I am also trying to read more poetry, so picking up this half-read book early in the year made sense.

As is often the case with collections with multiple authors, I enjoyed some poets' work more than others. But overall a worthwhile read, in part because of the diversity of voices, but also the recognition of place.

I get your comment about unfinished books, have a similar problem with series. I'll start a series, then something shiny comes along and never get back to sequels and such. LT's been helping some with the tracking, though. :)

Hello, Nancy. You are a most welcome addition to this large and vibrant collective.

I've been to Malaprop bookstore a few times. Interesting about the poetry collection.

>11 dchaikin:. Malaprop's is famous in the indie bookselling world, so I was happy to finally visit in May. The week in Asheville was terrific. Hope to make it back some time, but there are also so many other places to visit!

3. This Must Be The Place

I enjoyed Maggie O'Farrell's Instructions for a Heatwave, so I was looking forward to her new novel. Someone called it a jigsaw puzzle. I would agree with that and recommend this family drama. There a number of interconnected characters and the drama takes place over decades, so it is best read in big chunks of time, rather than fits and starts.

Hi, Nancy! Great meeting you Saturday, and now I've got your thread starred. The Great Lakes book is one that I am definitely interested in reading. Last year I read So Terrible a Storm: A Tale of Fury on Lake Superior and it whetted my appetite to learn more about the region.

The Bright Hour is a beautiful and life-affirming book, even while it is heartbreaking. The Washington Post calls it this year's When Breathe Becomes Air. Both authors faced their cancer diagnosis with such grace, and teach us how to live while dying, but also while living. Highly recommend!

Hi Nancy--I haven't really read many of your favorites from last year, but I have several of them waiting for me in my TBR piles. That's a good sign. ; ) I look forward to your future reads. Happy Sunday.

As you can see, my thread is more a way for me to keep track of my reading than to converse with other LTers. So many other great threads out there...

But I am glad you found me. I do hope you check out some of my favorite reads from last year. So much great nonfiction - and I consider myself a fiction read first. I think the narrative nonfiction has really taken off in the last few decades.

Off to find what you've been reading lately...

^Waving a big hello to my pal, Nancy, on her very quiet thread! I brought along a white-breasted nuthatch, which we have been regularly seeing at the feeders again.

Happy Reading!

I am looking forward to spending time with A House Among the Trees this weekend, by Julia Glass.

I was already planning on reading it before finding this review by the author of my favorite read so far this year: Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk. And before I knew it was inspired by Maurice Sendak, which I learned in this review.
