After trying to develop a theme around inherited objects, I found that it didn't really work for me. Instead, I am going with where the books are.

We have books everywhere and in abundance. Our son used to occasionally tell people that he lived in a library and he is now busy creating one of his own (see user bwa32). When he brought a friend to visit last spring she was amazed at the books and she commented on all the interesting things she saw in the house. So maybe by next year I will have figured out that theme ...

My categories are therefore nine locations where the books in that category may be found and another for books that are "new" this year and may not have a permanent home as yet. I've included ebooks on my iPad and books from the public library so those are also locations. Ten categories but no maximums and a minimum of one each. Simple, but guarantees a variety of reading for 2017.

I. The Music Room

This room became the music room because it was where we put the piano and stereo when we first moved in. Since then it has also become the home of my great-grandfather's "mountain" fiddle and a dulcimer my mother bought on one of her visits to Pigeon Forge, TN. While there were originally just music books in the room we now have math, engineering, and the history and philosophy of science along with some miscellaneous books purchased over the past couple of years.

II. The Book Room

When the house was new we called the other front room the book room because of the one and a half walls of bookcases that are built in. Here are many more science books along with mysteries, suspense, and general fiction. Over the past year I've done much of my reading here on the Victorian style couch that was my grandmother's.

III. The "Hall"

While most of this area is not exactly a hall, it is the direct path from the front door to the back of the house and is defined by three runners. Over time bookcases were added and here we have books that belonged to Mitchell from about third grade thru high school, reference, philosophy, biography, and history.

IV. The Media Room

This used to be the dining room but a few years ago we moved the dining table out and put a TV there. So now we have video, audio, and lots of books. A favorite place for entertainment with all those options. Romance and science fiction and fantasy live here along with a small selection of miscellaneous books.

V. The Sun Room

This began life as a very large deck which wasn't really used a lot and some years ago it was rebuilt as a sun room at the very back of the house. The first thing we did was buy some short bookcases to go there. The dining table also ended up there and is a favorite place for lunch. Here are many of our classics, poetry, drama, children's nonfiction, and others.

III. The "Hall"

1. The English Channel by Nigel Calder - Finished January 3, 2017

352 pages
DD - 909.096
BingoDog: Place name in title

I don't remember when we acquired this Penguin book but it has been on my shelves for some time. I could easily have placed it with the sailing books but it is also full of history, geology, and lore of the French and English coasts along with the various islands that exist in the Channel. The history ranges from the prehistoric up to the time in which Calder is writing and is an interesting view of the cross-channel relationships of the peoples involved.

The English Channel takes the form of a cruise in a ketch beginning at Ushant up the eastern side of the Channel to the North Sea, passing Brittany, Normandy, and on to Flanders. Then crossing over to the English side, we sail back down the channel eventually reaching the Isles of Scilly. On the way Calder treats the reader to the geology, geography, and history of each section of the coast as well as a great deal of information on navigation in the waters and ports of the Channel. The many maps were very helpful in visualizing the places he was describing.

While this was a slow read I did enjoy the many stories he told and all the facts about this area that I had never before come across.

X. The Public Library - All the non-novels I borrow from the library.

2. Evicted by Matthew Desmond - Finished January 7, 201

336 pages
DD - 339.46
AwardsCat: N.P.R. List
AlphaKit for "M"

Evicted highlights how not-quite-making-it people in our cities are forced into a downward spiral when they are evicted. They have very little chance of ever repairing their lives because eviction often leads to job loss, difficulty in finding another place to live, and loss of schooling for their children. This is a situation everyone needs to be aware of and Desmond does offer thoughts on how to fix the problem of our poorest families struggle to find basic shelter without spending practically all their income on housing and making them chose between paying for heat or food or rent.

Recommended.

278 pages
RandomCat - Leaphorn searching for missing person
CultureCat - is the medical research going on here ethical - a bit of a stretch
BingoDog -Title with animal

The First Eagle opens with the death of a Navajo man from the plague and the medical researcher, Dr. Woody, being extremely perturbed by his rapid death. Soon Chee arrests a Hopi for murder of a Navajo policeman and the retired Leaphorn is hired to find another researcher who has gone missing. Another good story from Hillerman.

I need to do these little reviews faster since I'm finishing books faster than I'm recording them ...

Today has been unseasonably warm with sun earlier but now it's clouding up and we may get a shower tonight. Tomorrow will be a lot cooler but any rain should be gone before the big victory parade in Clemson tomorrow. They are estimating a crowd of at least 50,000 - a good day to stay home as far as I'm concerned.

4. Blackout by Connie Willis - Finished January 9, 2019

491 pages
SFFKit - book been meaning to read.

While this is a time travel story it is largely about how people coped on the home front in WWII England. I stayed up much too late at night while reading Blackout. However, it was a good thing that I knew it was just half of the story. IV. The Media Room

5. Ethan of Athos by Lois McMaster Bujold - Finished January 10, 2017

237 pages
Vorkosigan Group Read
CultureCat

This is a reread - my review from 2014:

Ethan Urquhart is a doctor on Athos and is Chief of Reproductive Biology at Sevarin District Reproductive Center. Athos is a male only planet which has kept itself fairly isolated from the rest of humanity since its founding. But now there is a problem - the ovarian cultures they have been using to produce their sons are dying and more must be procured. When the shipment from Jackson's Whole arrives it is not what they ordered and someone has to travel off-world and personally secure the right genetic material. Ethan is the chosen representative and from the moment of his arrival at Kline Station he is dragged into local politics, mercenaries, spies, and the dreaded contact with WOMEN. In fact, it is only an alliance Ethan forges with a woman mercenary that allows him to survive to carry out his mission.

I really enjoyed this story even though it is not really part of Miles Vorkosigan's storyline except in a very indirect way. The all male society is somehow believable and Ethan's culture shock is well done. This one may get read again...

VI.The Rest of the House

From the desk in my husband's "playroom" (used to be a bedroom) which he asked me to read.

6. Superforecasting by Philip E. Tetlock and Dan Gardner - Finished January 14, 2017

Tetlock begins by talking about forecasts in general and why the "experts" are so bad at it. Then he moves on to the research he has done on determining whether or not forecasts are reliable by following up on them to see how they worked out. Many were so vague that one really can't decide if they were true or not. Eventually this led to the Good Judgment Project where ordinary people were given fairly specific questions of the type "Will X happen sometime in the next six months?" and their results evaluated over time. Part of the research was to figure out why some of these participants were so much better than the experts at making their forecasts. then he invites the reader to check out the Project website and join in.

The book was quite readable and the stories told were interesting. It also made me think about all the predictions littering the daily news and I'm much more suspicious of them than I was before. I never did put much stock in them and now I'm doubly suspicious.

7. Closed Casket by Sophie Hannah - Finished January 19, 2017

The second of Sophie Hannah's books featuring Hercule Poirot. I didn't like it as well as the first one. It seemed rather flat and everytime I started reading it, I would fall asleep. Not quite Christie's Poirot and none of the other characters that usually accompany him.

8. The Signal and the Noise by Nate Silver - Finished January 22, 2017

Some of the same ideas as in Superforecasting but not as good a read for me. It was easy to get bogged down in some of the chapters and I was tempted a couple of times to skim rather than pay close attention to the contents. Not sorry I read it but not likely to ever look at it again. Among other things, I think that the manuscript should have had another careful editing before publication.

Currently I'm reading

The Gene : An Intimate History by Siddhartha Mukherjee - very good so far

X. The Public Library - All the non-novels I borrow from the library.

9. The Gene: An Intimate History by Siddhartha Mukherjee - Finished February 4, 2017

This was a really good book and not too technical for most readers. I did have to slow down a few times so as not to miss anything but the explanations of the science were pretty good. Towards the end he discussed some of the ethical implications of our coming ability to edit genes, not just in specific cells in the body, but eventually in ova and sperm. Thinking about these issues is urgent given the rapid progress of the science involved. Recommended.

10. The Unwinding by George Packer - finished February 18, 2017

This was a slow read but an important one as it helped me to understand how we got from the fifties to now in the US. The author leaves it to the reader to draw their own conclusions. Although somewhat depressing (which is why it took me a long time to get through) I can cautiously recommend The Unwinding.

More tomorrow I hope.

An interesting story based on a historical incident. I might read more by this author.

12. Finding Nouf by Zoe Ferraris - finished February 27, 2017

Contemporary mystery set in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The setting and the culture are what make this worth reading. I already have the next one out of the library.

Haven't posted since before we had to go to Tennessee...bought lots of books at McKay's in Nashville and in Knoxville...most of the fiction being space opera but lots of other stuff too. A quick listing of some of the reading I've been doing...

From the public library - novels

16. Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs - Mercy Thompson and trouble among the supernaturals

17. A Call to Duty by David Weber and Timothy Zahn - military space opera in the Honorverse series

18. Echoes in Death by J. D. Robb - latest with Eve Dallas - OK entry in series

We've been buying lots of books ever since Christmas and I've been reading those as well as lots of books from the public library instead of sticking mostly to my own shelves as planned!

Here are a few of them -

20. What Makes This Book So Great by Jo Walton - Finished late February, 2017 - interesting short essays about her reading adventures

21. Dragon Ship by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller - Finished March 2017 - Liaden universe - reading these as I find them but at some point I may want to read them in chronological order

22. Taking the Medicine by Druin Burch - Finished late February 2017 - a good history of medicine from ancient Greece til today with an emphasis on how bad it was until very recently

23. Uprooted by Naomi Novik - Finished March 2017 - loved this one

Hi there! So glad I found this thread. You seem to have organized your reading in a way that resonates with how I have set up my 6 book cases: one for general reading, one for sci-fi/fantasy and childhood books, and several for favorites. This method helps me with my own reading challenges, whether they are "new" books, "TBR" books, or books I've been reading for far too long and just need to finish, darn it!

Love how you include your public library as a book source. We owe a lot to these places.

More from the public library -

24. The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage by Sydney Padua - Clever, funny, and full of neat facts. I even loved the appendices.

25. 1635: The Papal Stakes by Flint and Gannon - More shenanigans in Flint's alternate Europe with Pope Urban on the run along with the uptime embassy. Lots of intrigues, escapes, and even balloons for transport. I'm still enjoying this series.

26. A Call to Arms by Weber, Zahn, and Pope - Space opera and the second in the Manticore Ascending series. My only complaint is that the third one isn't out and may not be for a while. However there are lots of others in that universe that I haven't read as yet.

II. The Book Room

27. Hunting Badger by Tony Hillerman - Finished March 2017 - For the Hillerman group read - a good one

28. The Mistress of Alderley by Robert Barnard - Finished April 2017

29. Corpse in a Gilded Cage by Robert Barnard - Finished April 2017

30. Death and the Chaste Apprentice by Robert Barnard - Finished April 2017

31. Death of a Mystery Writer by Robert Barnard - Finished April 2017

32. Political Suicide by Robert Barnard - Finished April 2017

So I read several by Barnard pretty much one after the other and liked them all except the last one. Political Suicide had more about political corruption and back room deals than I wanted to read just now. It's said that he writes a different book each time and I think that 's true. I'll definitely give the other unread ones on my shelves a try at some point. Barnard is a British author and most of the mysteries are from the 70s and 80s.

34. 1635: The Cannon Law by Eric Flint and Andrew Dennis - Finished April 2017 - takes place between The Galileo Affair and The Papal Stakes.

more recently

II. The Book Room

35. The Wailing Wind by Tony Hillerman - Finished April 26, 2017 - For the May Hillerman read. I jumped the gun a little! I didn't like it as much as the previous book in the series but it was still fairly good.

36. A Cat by Any Other Name by Lydia Adamson - Finished April 27, 2017 - Published in 1992 this mystery hasn't aged very well or maybe wasn't that good to start with. I didn't really connect with the main character who is a part-time actress and cat-sitter. I won't be rushing to read the others from this series anytime soon.

39. His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik - Finished April 2017 - Fantasy and alternative history; book1

40. Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik - Finished April 2017 - book 2 of the series - enjoyed both stories and will be reading more of the series

II. The Book Room

41. Epitaph for a Lobbyist by R. B. Dominic - Finished April 30, 2017 - Published in 1974 this is one of a series of mysteries featuring Congressman Ben Safford. Corruption in high places but, perhaps, less bipartisanship than today. This was a reread from the pair of authors who also wrote a longer series as Emma Lathen.

VII. The Virtual Bookroom

51. Led Astray: The Best of Kelley Armstrong by Kelly Armstrong - Finished April 2017 - Short stories, many set in one of her urban fantasy universes. One or two even edged into horror. These were read over a couple of months between other things.

X. The Public Library - All the non-novels I borrow from the library

52. Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri - Finished May 5, 2014 - anthology of short stories - A collection of short stories by Lahiri. While they were interesting stories, at least one was rather off-putting and once I put the book down for a few days I found myself reluctant to pick it back up. She probably isn't the author for me though I'm glad I tried her out.

53. The Creative Spark by Agustin Fuentes - Finished May 4, 2017. - Excellent! Fuentes explores the role of creativity in the evolution of Homo sapiens sapiens. Published in 2017, this book by an anthropologist is up to date and well researched with notes and a multitude of references. The Creative Spark: How Imagination Made Humans Exceptional is definitely recommended.

58. A Little Local Murder by Robert Barnard - Finished May, 2017 - An early effort by this author that wasn't as good as some of the later ones. Didn't like most of the characters.

59. The Case is Closed by Patricia Wentworth - Finished May, 2017 - also an early effort. I generally like the Miss Silver books but this is not one of the best. From 1937. The heroine, Hilary Carew, had a little of the "too stupid to live vibe". Wentworth is often compared to Agatha Christie but not quite as good..

60. Just What the Doctor Ordered by Colin Watson - Finished May 2017 - Also known as The Flaxborough Crab. I would read more of Colin Watson who created an unusual problem in this book. From 1969.

61. Death's Head by Jonathan Ross - Finished May, 2017 - There's a reason why this author has so few copies on LT. Unlikable characters - dull reading most of the way through. This is the closest I've been to abandoning a book for a quite a while.

62. Puppet for a Corpse by Dorothy Simpson - Finished May, 2017 - The best in this bunch. Was Dr. Pettifer's death suicide or murder?

IX. The Public Library - Novels

63. The Girl Who Know Too Much by Amanda Quick - Finished May, 2017 - Historical romantic suspense with a Hollywood connection; set in the 1930's and one of her non-paranormal books. A fair mystery and nice romance making this an above average outing for Quick. While everything is tied up, the ending leaves room for another book set in Burning Cove.

VI.The Rest of the House

These are from a small bookcase in the guest room where a lot of last year's book haul were shelved until read.

64. Personal Demon by Kelly Armstrong - Finished May 2017 - From the Otherworld series and one that brings some changes to the supernatural community, in particular the Cortez Cabal. Good urban fantasy.

65. Duainfey by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller - Finished May 2017 - Not at all like the Liaden books. I'll be reading the second part of the duology to find out how things work out for Rebecca and Meriden. Word of warning - graphic sex and psychological abuse.

66. R is for Ricochet by Sue Grafton - Finished May 2017 - A little different from others in the series with Kinsey pretty much just along for the ride.

67. The Sign of the Book by John Dunning - Finished May 2017 - Cliff, the Denver bookman and ex-cop, helps out his girlfriend who has been asked to defend a former BFF. The case involves a collection of possibly valuable, signed books. A good addition to this series of mysteries.

II. The Book Room

68. Murder at the Palace by Elliot Roosevelt - Finished June, 2017 - I'm pretty sure that I never read this. Not the greatest writing but an interesting story featuring Eleanor Roosevelt as the amateur detective with the main setting being Buckingham Palace. The fictional murder takes place during an actual visit by Mrs. Roosevelt in October 1942.

69. Longshot by Dick Francis - Finished June 2017 - Reread. John Kendall visits a racing stable in order to write the biography of the trainer, Tremayne Vickers. He soon becomes immersed in the affairs of the Vickers family and a murder investigation of the death of a former employee.

70. Hot Money by Dick Francis - Finished June, 2017 - Reread. Money in the form of gold and expensive race horses. Jockey Ian and his wealthy father are hiding from the rest of the family and trying to discover which member of the family murdered Ian's step-mother.

They find Cromwell's children and send them to Grantville with an escort on the way. Of course, the pursuit also heads North ... I was glad to catch up with these characters.

Really new arrivals but I put them here:

VII. The Virtual Bookroom

96. 1635: The Tangled Web by Virginia DeMarce - Finished July 4, 2017 - back on the continent we have several threads filling in pieces a bit tangential to the main story lines. I liked this better than many of the reviewers.

97. 1635: The Wars for the Rhine by Anette Pedersen - Finished July 6, 2017 - Also something of a side story though important in the overall tapestry being built by the various authors of the series. Again, I liked it better than many of the reviewers on Amazon though not a place to start the series.

98. Grantville Gazette, Volume V edited by Eric Flint - Finished July 8, 2017 - An anthology of short stories - a best of taken from several issues of the online magazine, The Grantville Gazette. And now for something different -

II. The Book Room

114. The Shape Shifter by Tony Hillerman - finished August 13, 2017

115. Skeleton Man by Tony Hillerman - finished August 10, 2017

His last Leaphorn/Chee books. OK but not his best.

VI.The Rest of the House

116. Crimes by Moonlight by Charlaine Harris - finished August 12, 2017 - short story anthology; urban fantasy, horror, all dark; some were pretty good

From New Arrivals

117. A Liaden Universe Constellation Volume 3 by SharonLee and Steve Miller - Finished August 17, 2017 - some very good stories in this anthology

and from the public library

118. Spider Woman's Daughter by Anne Hillerman - Finished August 18, 2017 - Some people didn't like this continuation of Tony Hillerman's Leaphorn/Chee series but I thought it was very good. Leaphorn is shot in the first chapter and spend the rest of the book in the hospital in critical condition so we get a lot of Chee and even more Bernie.

Some more from the Grantville universe in no particular order and read at various times this month -

119. 1636: Mission to the Mughals by Eric Flint and Griffin Barber - finished August 2017

120. 1636: Commander Cantrell in the West Indies by Eric Flint and Charles E. Gannon - finished August 2017

121. Essen Steel by Kim Mackey - finished August 2017

122. 1636: The Barbie Consortium by Gorg Huff and Paula Goodlett - finished August 2017

123. Love and Chemistry by Jack Carroll and Edith Wild - finished August 2017

124. Second Chance Bird by Garrett W. Vance - finished August 2017

125. Muse of Music by Enrico Toro and David Carrico - finished August 23, 2017

Some were from the "main" story line and others were shorter side stories.

I have been reading a lot but I've been paying very little attention to the challenge categories or even my personal challenge. Life sent me in another direction for a while!

two more books from a few days ago -

From the public library

126. Man Overboard by J. A. Jance - finished August 20, 2017

Features Ali Reynolds and murder by cyber bullying. OK but I still like Sheriff Brady more.

One pulled from my own shelves

127. Passenger to Frankfurt by Agatha Christie - Finished August 26, 2017

Not the usual Agatha Christie. I liked it better than many of the reviewers here on LT. As I read I kept thinking about current events and persons who inherit money and a drive to make more money and then more and more power so as to remake the world the way they want it.

Two fantasy novels that I acquired earlier this year -

128. Spirits White as Lightning by Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill - finished August 28, 2017 - urban fantasy with elves - and

129. Music to My Sorrow by Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill - Finished August 30, 2017

both from the Bedlam's Bard series. And another sometimes thought of as a prequel to the series

130. Bedlam Boyz by Ellen Guon - finished August 31, 2017 - not nearly as good as others in the series but with some important back story for one of the recurring characters.

Now if I could only find the ones I haven't read as yet ...

Something different from my own shelves added back in 2013 -

131. Simple Genius by David Balducci - Finished September 2, 2017

not really my thing but his fans should enjoy the book. Something of a techno-thriller with murder and with the CIA possibly being the bad guys. Also childhood trauma plays a part.

Didn't realize it had been so long since I updated my thread. Lots of books - mostly mysteries - to add. They were either from the book room or on my iPad.

Since we were without electricity for three days (Irma has a lot to answer for but we got off lightly in upstate South Carolina - just lots of wind and rain for the most part but many were without power for several days.) I picked a couple of books off the shelf by Dick Francis that had reasonable print size so I could read even though the clouds were rather thick. I did have to sit in the mostly glass room to see however. Then I read some more Dick Francis just because. They were pretty much typical Dick Francis novels.

132. Murder International by Dick Francis - finished September 2017 - an omnibus of Smokescreen. Knockdown, and Slayride - These were the afterwards with Smokescreen being the best and Slayride the least of the three.

133. Driving Force by Dick francis - Finished September 2017

134. Shattered by Dick Francis - Finished September 2017

This last week from the public library -

135. The Western Star by Craig Johnson - Finished September 2017 - a good Longmire story

136. Secrets in Death by J. D. Robb - Finished September 22, 2017 - the latest Eve Dallas mystery

95hailelib
Sep 24, 2017, 3:35 pm

I've also read a number of books from the Kindle app -

137. Boy Made of Dawn by R. Allen Chappell - finished September 2017 - This series involves the main character in mysteries on the Navajo reservation - good sense of place - I enjoy them as much as Hillerman though the writing may not be quite as good.

138. Mojado by R. Allen Chappell - finished September 2017

139. Alliance of Equals by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller - finished September 2017 - a Liaden story

140. The Danish Scheme by Herbert Sakalaucks and Eric Flint - finished September 2017 - a 1632 story where the Danish king sponsors an attempt to start a colony in North America.

141. Play Dead by Peter Dickinson - finished September 2017 - An older British mystery - started off slow but got a lot better.

Meant to be back sooner . Here are some books I've read from the public library.

142. When All the Girls Have Gone by Jayne Ann Krentz - Finished September 2017 - contemporary romantic suspense - average for the author

143. Illusion Town by Jayne Castle aka Jayne Ann Krentz - Finished September 2017 - another novel about life on Harmony where the paranormal is routine and we meet a new couple and a new dust bunny.

144. The Painted Queen by Elizabeth Peters and Joan Hess - Finished October 2, 2017 - finished by Ms. Peters friend after her death. An interesting Peabody and Emerson adventure although the plot was wilder than usual. Ms. Hess did a reasonable job on this last adventure.

Two recent arrivals and one from the public library:

145. Rock with Wings by Anne Hillerman - Finished September 25, 2017 - Mostly Bernie and Chee. Need to find the third one.

146. At All Costs by David Weber - finished October 2017 - Space Opera with lots of politics.

and 147. Mission of Honor by David Weber - finished October 2017 - and more of the same

Back to mysteries -

148. Decider by Dick Francis - finished October 6, 2017

149. Break In by Dick Francis - finished October 4, 2017

150. The Danger by Dick Francis - finished October 9, 2017

Of the three, I liked Decider best this time around.

From the Public Library

151. A Rising Thunder by David Weber - Finished October 2017

152. Shadow of Victory by David Weber - Finished October 2017

153. Torch of Freedom by David Weber and Eric Flint - Finished October 2017

154. Storm from the Shadows by David Weber - Finished October 2017

and some read on my iPad

155. Crown of Slaves by David Weber and Eric Flint - finished October 2017

156. Shadow of Freedom by David Weber - finished October 2017

157. The Shadow of Saganami by David Weber - finished October 2017

158. Cauldron of Ghosts by David Weber and Eric Flint - finished October 2017

159. On Basilisk Station by David Weber - finished October 2017

All from the Honor Harrington universe with the last one being a reread of the first book published in the series. Except for some anthologies of short stories and a couple of prequel books focusing on how treecats and humans first bonded I'm all caught up. Weber needs to get the next one written and published!

We went to the annual "bag sale" that the local library system has every October last Saturday and found 24 books for $10 US. Mostly popular fiction but a few nonfiction in the mix. About two-thirds donations rather than discards and mostly like new hardcovers, so I'm pretty happy with our finds.

I'm impressed that you've worked through all (or almost all) of the Ring of Fire series! Maybe you can give me some advice on which of these to tackle next. I've read 1632, 1633, 1634: The Baltic War, 1635: Music and Murder and 1636: The Devil's Opera. I plan to read 1635: A Parcel of Rogues sometime. After that, I'm not sure. Some of the earlier books have lukewarm reviews or don't interest me. Some of the later books like 1636: Mission to the Mughals or 1636: The Viennese Waltz look intriguing.

I don't really have an interest in reading the entire series but I do enjoy the books. So I'd greatly appreciate it if you have an answer to my question: which ones are the best of the lot and do I need to read any others before them in order to understand them completely?

This thread has bee pretty much abandoned for the past month! I didn't realize how long I'd neglected it when I came to do a bit of year-end tidying up.

>105 mathgirl40:

About the Ring of Fire series, if you are still interested, I did like 1635: A Parcel of Rogues but I liked all of them. One of the threads I particularly like begins during 1634: The Galileo Affair followed by The Cannon Law, The Papal Stakes, and the recent 1636: The Vatican Sanction. Two others I like are 1636: The Viennese Waltz which is followed by The Ottoman Onslaught and also 1636: Commander Cantrell in the West Indies.

I feel that reading them all, even the shorter side stories, makes the overall picture more interesting. However, there are books that the people interested in lots of action will not find as good. That partly explains some of the ratings they get.

Thanks for the holiday greetings. I ike the cuddly bears.

There was a a lot of reading in December which brought my total to 172 books, more if I count a few rereads of Honorverse books that I read earlier. I'm not going into details although I did add all the new ones to my categories above. There were also several mysteries and the Liaden novel, Ghost Ship, and the latest Ring of Fire novel. I may or may not finish the romantic suspense novel that I am currently reading, Dark of Night.

Real life intervened several times during the year and in the end I just read as the mood stuck me for a large part of 2017 but I did get entries in all but one of my original categories and I filled 20 of the Bingo squares. Mainly, all this showed up in my being absent from the threads but I hope to post more in 2018.

So, on to the New Year!
