The shortlist for this year's International Dublin Literary Award has been announced:

A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James
Outlaws by Javier Cercas
Diary of the Fall by Michel Laub
Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill
Lila by Marilynne Robinson
The End of Days by Jenny Erpenbeck
Academy Street by Mary Costello
Our Lady of the Nile by Scholastique Mukasonga
Family Life by Akil Sharma
Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever? by Dave Eggers

The winning novel will be announced on June 9th.

I've read and can highly recommend the James and the Cercas. The Mukasonga and the Sharma were good, but I would be surprised if either book won. I have the Erpenbeck, which I'd like to read soon, and the Robinson, which I'll get to eventually.

Outlaws is really good (and the only one from the list I had read) :)

I managed to read all but Family Life and found some gems on the list. I especially enjoyed Outlaws, Diary of the Fall and Our Lady of the Nile, but all were good reads. This is a list I will watch in future years - I think these books recommended by librarians have more global appeal than many of the more specific award lists.

>7 bergs47: Nice shortlist. I’ve read five of those books (the ones by Hamid, MacLaverty, McGregor, Saunders and Shamsie), which were all very good, and own two others (by Énard and Fridlund).
