One of my favorite authors of children's books, Beverly Cleary, will be 100 in about two weeks.

I'm going to read/reread some of her works to celebrate what a tremendous contribution she has made to children's literature.

If you've never read anything by her, you SHOULD. Try one of the Ramona books, like Ramona the Pest.

We're having a Beverly Cleary reading challenge over in TIOLI, feel free to join us, here: http://www.librarything.com/topic/220538#5526914

>2 hearthlit: I agree. As I read her stories, I say to myself about the author "she really remembers what it is like to be a child".

Post your reads here, if you like. :)

I found two Beverly Cleary books I'd not read, and that were available at the public library:

Muggie Maggie and Jean and Johnny

I'll post my reviews here once I've read them.

Do join in!

I've never heard of Muggie Maggie!
I loved Jean and Johnny as a kid. I think it (and The Luckiest Girl and Fifteen ) were probably the first YA books I read.

>5 madhatter22: I've not read the ones you mention. Almost all my Cleary reads were once I was an adult, and about Henry, Beezus, and Ramona.

My favorite Cleary titles include -
Socks about a cat and a new baby in the household!
Dear Mr.Henshaw and the sequel Strider. Very touching, and I like any story with a dog in it.

and then there are the Mouse and the Motorcycle series...

>7 nrmay: you're welcome!

I also enjoyed the Dear Mr. Henshaw books, but the Ramona series remains my favorite. The kids are SO real.

First book done!

Muggie Maggie by Beverly Cleary

Maggie is eight, and excited about third grade...so why does she have to learn to write in cursive?

This is a short but fun book about a contrary student.

>11 fuzzi: There wouldn't be any story if it was written now, because they barely teach them cursive anymore. (grumble)
