So Neil Degrasse Tyson tweeted:

What stood out for me in this article was this:

And at last, when I finally could not take it anymore, when I could not hide the bleeding, the tears and the pain, I went back to the doctor.

And I took my male partner.

And when he said, to a medical professional, that my pain was impacting our sex life, that he was no longer satisfied, all of a sudden it became a crisis. My pain, in and of itself, had never been valid. It had never mattered.

But the moment it became an inconvenience to a man — when it directly impacted the quality of a heteronormative sexual relationship — well, then it became A SERIOUS PROBLEM that was worthy of attention.

Women's pain is regarded as normal and something that does not need any attention, from childbirth to any disease that only women, or predominantly women, are subject to.

Neil Degrasse Tyson may be a great cosmologist but he's mistaken about biology. Just one example: http://knowledgenuts.com/2013/10/15/cat-sex-is-effectively-torture/

I had the experience of going to an orthopedist for sciatica and my partner insisted on going in with me and telling the doctor that my back pain was interfering with our sex life. Never mind that everyday activities were painful or impossible for me, his pleasure was being diminished. i felt as if he had said, "My toy is broken. Fix it." It's always about him.

But did it get the orthopedist to take your pain more seriously?

Tolerating pain as a "normal" part of intercourse just isn't a good idea, but I guess it makes sense for the rampant "rape is sex" mentality.

>3 RidgewayGirl: I suppose it did because he decided I needed a cat scan and a spinal tap/lumbar puncture (painful/scary procedure).
