Hi
I am looking for a good collection of hardboiled short stories. Anyone have a fave?

Maybe a collection of Dashiell Hammet Continental Op shorts.
There are also some shorter Marlowe stories in Trouble is My Business.

I'll second the recommendation of The Mammoth Book of Private Eye Stories. Perhaps by now someone has edited a collection of stories from Black Mask magazine.

alans, there's a London Noir volume too.

Following on from message 2, there's a several other volumes of non-Marlowe Raymond Chandler shorts that are well worth investigating called Playback, Trouble is My Business and The Simple Art of Murder.

Excellent. Good to see those exist, alans and Grammath. But isn't Playback a Marlowe novel?

Happens to the best of us. :) I'll look out for the noir collections, when my moratorium on book-buying ends.

A moratorium on book buying? Sounds harrowing.

Yes. It might be. But the reason may alleviate it somewhat. I just came home from a visit to Cambridge, Mass. Between fabulous used and remaindered books, and a selection of birthday gifts, I brought 45 books. Since, I've gotten sent, or bought, 9 great mysteries. I already had too many unread books. This assortment is too good to let go unread because I'm dazzled by new things I can't afford. And so, the moratorium.

Till the end of June, at least.

The Chandler book I was thinking of was Pearls are a Nuisance. I knew it began with a P.

Grammath - thanks! It's one I'd not even heard of. (Sad admission? But true.)
