I always pay attention to the Caldecott nominees, but I'm looking for more current picture books. I usually get them at the library, then add any ones I love to my "wish list" here and on Amazon.

I also enjoy alphabet books if they're well illustrated and clever.

You will really like the alphabet book for this series. The artist has received great reviews for her creative work!

There is a new award winning children's book series I wanted to share with everyone. Bur Bur and Friends is a group of multicultural characters who educate kids about sports and outdoor exploration through their experiences. The authors, JoAnne Pastel and Kakie Fitzsimmons are mothers of biracial children who were searching for books that had characters who looked like their kids and their friends. Currently there are four books in the series which include

1. Bur Bur's Boating ABC's
2. Bur Bur's Fishing Adventure
3. Bur Bur Throws Out the First Pitch
4. Anna Goes Hiking

With the exception of the ABC Book, the back of these books have educational interactive point and learn pages so young kids can learn about the sport or activity. These include items like "what to bring" or "what to wear" or "The rules of the game."

For an alphabet book, I think Maira Kalman's What Pete Ate from A to Z is pretty terrific.

A recent picture book that I'm planning to buy for the library where I work is Such a Prince, a retelling of the "three peaches" folk tale. The illustrations are gorgeous and it begs to be read aloud.

Darkness Slipped In by Ella Burfoot and Bats at the Library by David Lies are fantastic books published earlier this year. Check them out.

Mommy Takes Away
Daddy Sneaks
Grandma Loves
Grandpa's Loud

By Sharlene Weingart

All picture books for young children and those learning to read. Written from a child's point of view and don't have a moral, etc...just charming "I love you" books by a Canadian author...
