This is a good un so far. Miles was trying to escape life in a dying textile mills town, but his mother became ill with cancer and he got sucked back into life there, taking over the town Diner. Now he is going through a divorce and is maybe starting to evaluate his life - though he mostly just lets it wash over him. I am not half way through, but liking it the best of the prize winners I have read lately.

I remember being ready to give up Empire Falls a number of times. It just didn't seem to be going anywhere. But I liked the writer's style and I enjoyed the characters enough to keep going.

I stuck with it and am so glad I did. Bits and characters from that book still pop up in my head from time to time.

Wasn't it amazing how Mrs. Whiting was quietly extracting her revenge over such a long period of time, and no one even figured it out?
I thought Max (Miles dad) would have been the one who hit the child with a car, so that was a surprise to me too.
