David Bowie's Top 100

David Bowie was a voracious reader. A recent exhibition, David Bowie Is, published his Favorite 100 Books, and that list is making the many rounds this week. That collection has been entered (though edition info needs scrubbed).

Saw an article with that list, and found it interesting: not the typical, and also not pretentious. An eclectic mix of fiction, non-fiction, verse. Seemingly in keeping with the public persona(e), to be sure.

A friend of mine who chatted with him in the early '90s said they discussed my late husband's book, Real Magic. Bowie said he owned it and liked it. Also said the same about the works of Janet and Stewart Farrar. Bowie was a bit of an occultist, with a familiarity with Aleister Crowley and a fondness for A.E. Waite.

This is a pretty neat list, indeed. I read something this week to the effect that Bowie had a massive collection of books, but I can't put it to hand again.

I still have the 1980's poster of him reading the Idiot (Russian literature) from the American Library Association ... Always loved David Bowie ... What a treasure to still have the poster ...

David Bowie’s son, the screenwriter Duncan Jones, has launched the David Bowie book club. He describes his dad as being a beast of a reader. I’ll be back with a link as soon as I can get to something bigger than a cell phone.
