I have read the book Lincoln by David Herbert Donald. It traces Lincoln's life up to the time he was assassinated. I rather liked the way the author extrapolated on this president's life. And this book is filled with anecdotes, interesting pictures of Lincoln's family, and his rivals. It won a Pulitzer prize.

Have you read Gore Vidal's LINCOLN? If not, do!
That historical novel was meticulously researched, yet met with the most haughty (but unsupported) rebukes. Read Vidal's novel and then read (at least this one) limp argument against it and Vidal's erudite refutation of every 'point' it raises:

Gore Vidal takes on C. Vann Woodward, and others
