A Cosmopolitan City: Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Old Cairo
An exhibit at the Oriental Institute, University of Chicago, features more than 70 objects that highlight the interactions of the Muslim, Christian, and Jewish communities of Old Cairo during the 7th to 12th centuries AD. Documents from the Genizah (deposit of Jewish manuscripts from the Ben Ezra Synagogue), early Islamic administrative records, illuminated manuscripts, textiles, pottery, and objects of daily life show how these communities lived together and melded their traditions to create a vibrant multi-cultural society. An audio component, “Voices of Old Cairo,” presents poetry, music, personal letters, and administrative documents that bring the past to life.
Exhibit runs from February 17 to September 13, 2015.
