I just finished my first novel, but when i was going through the process to publish of Kindle Direct, I realized that it was unclear as to what genre my book fits into.

I call it science fiction, but it has elements of speculative fiction, political thriller and techno-thriller.

The series revolves around a team of special operations soldiers fighting a war against a tyrannical world government in the year 2106. My question is: is genre branding that important?

Why limit yourself to one genre label?

In a way, you need to use the genre labels, there are too many books out there to leave it floating randomly. Readers want a starting point when they're looking for their next book.

Genre labeling can also be limiting and misleading. You have to find some compromise, getting your book in front of as many types of readers who might be intrigued, not limiting the scope of your potential readership, but at the same time focusing on the right readers.

If I had to suggest choosing one over the others, my gut says go with speculative fiction.
