Silhouette illustration

I think my first awareness of this type of illustration was Arthur Rackham's Sleeping Beauty.



But my favorite contemporary artist has been Jan Pienkowski.

Can you point me to more illustrators and works?

Checking tags yesterday, I discovered The Foggy, Foggy Forest and got it from the library. The concept is an exceptionally good idea - to print black silhouettes on vellum and explore the forest by turning the pages, moving deeper into the forest. However, the artwork didn't live up to my admittedly high expectations.

I have Sunday Morning by Judith Viorst and illustrated by Hilary Knight. This appears to be the only book he illustrated as silhouettes.

Looking on his blog, he is a great fan of Parrish blue, which automatically puts him in the top tier of my loves.

Mother, Mother, I Feel Sick. Send for the Doctor, Quick Quick Quick! by Remy Charlip is a classic, designed to be a shadow play, actually. It's not in the same vein of beautiful fantastic illustrations, but it's very clever and fun and can be interactive. One of my favorite books when I was a little.

Speaking of shadow plays, I've got The adventures of Prince Achmed out for enjoyment. Lotte Reiniger used paper puppets to make stop action animated films. You can find parts of them online, I think.

Should be a book, but googling the term The Fairy's Clock doesn't find it, but interestingly, an images seach comes up with many unrelated silhouettes.

Ah! In folklore, the dandelion was known as the fairy’s clock because the number of seeds left on the stalk after blowing away the airborne seeds was said to predict the time of the fairies’ nightly meetings.

Carew Rice is pretty impressive but even his published works are rare and expensive.

Hmm. Researched Carew and tried to upload author and cover photos, but they're not working this morning.
