I have a new great-nephew just born in Albuquerque. In order to provide a 'proper' education for him, I started researching Civil War battles and campaigns in the West. To date, The Civil War in the Western Territories: Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah, Bloody Valverde : a Civil War battle on the Rio Grande, February 21, 1862, The battle of Glorieta : Union victory in the West and The battle of Glorieta Pass : a Gettysburg in the West, March 26-28, 1862 have been added to my collection.

Does the Civil War collective have additional suggestions?

On the war in New Mexico, try Sibley's New Mexico Campaign

If you're interested the Trans-Mississippi try Pea Ridge: Civil War Campaign in the West
and Through the Howling Wilderness on the 1864 Red River Campaign and Union Failure in the West for the later campaign in Louisiana by Gary Dillard Joiner (no touchstone for this work but his other on the subject) One Damn Blunder from Beginning to End is coming up

And of course a DVD/portable RAM/laser camel/whatever it is we'll be watching movies on in ten years time of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" will form a vital part of the young man's education.

Howdy surly et al,
one of my favorite areas. I've even made the trek to Santa Fe, Glorieta Pass (THe Gettysburg of the West), Apache Canyon and Valverde. Please take a look under my "SOUTHWEST" tag. There's also several works of historical fiction on the subject>

I've added Glory, glory, Glorieta : the Gettysburg of the West to the Western section of my Civil War collection. It was written (or at least published) six years before the two other books I have on Glorieta. I wonder if there was any major developments in Western Civil War scholarship in the 1990s that render this tome obsolete?

HI again Surly, as I mentioned you might check my tag SOUTHWEST for some others authors on the same subject. Both The Battle of Glorieta Pass by Thomas Edrington and Battle of Glorieta by Alberts are very good. The Civil War in West Texas and New Mexico uncovers lost data from Confederate commander Sibley. Sibley's New Mexico Campaign is a newer examination. The Civil War In The American West though older has wider coverage. Finally My Life with the Army in the West is a wonderful account of a real Westerner (reminds me of Little Big Man).

Have obtained a copy of 'NOTHING BUT VICTORY' (2005) which purports to be the first book to cover the entire career of the Army of the Tennessee. I hope to review it here when finished.

Two I own are:

"Colorado Volunteers in New Mexico 1862" by Hollister and "Confederate Army of New Mexico" by Hall

Jim,

Interesting. Is it well illustrated? Long?
