I picked up this very pretty copy of Black Beauty today in a junk shop and am trying to date it, but haven't come up with anything. The man at the shop said he thought it was 1920s. The only information in the book itself is that it was published by the H.M. Caldwell Company in New York. It's green cloth with gilt on the spine and front cover and a portrait of a woman on the front.

If anyone is able to track down any information on this edition, mind sharing how? So next time I can do my own grunt work?

Caldwell was a publisher active around 1905. It is still decades after the 1877 original.

For many books where you want to investigate the history of publishers, it can be helpful to look up the Lucile Project since they have publisher descriptions for the 19th C. and early 20th C. publishers that happened to issue this title.
