James Lowen has written an introduction to the forthcoming HBW and BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World

The Checklist provides the taxonomy for the IUCN Red List, and last year was officially adopted "as the standard reference for bird taxonomy and nomenclature for non-passerine species" by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS). It has just been officially adopted by the European Union (for its official EU Bird List). My review has been included here.

And it happens again: I have absolutely no practical use for these; I'd really, really love to have them - just to sit and pore over. I tell you what - when the Nation Lottery comes through for me, that's going to be one really big and expensive library ...

It´s a great book for poring over - armchair birding....
