I already posted this in the 'name that book' group, but though I would try here too since y'all are short story lovers.
Counting on the groups expertise on this one. Trying to help a friend at work find a short story she read some years ago. Don't know if it's from a single author collection or an anthology.
The story is about an older prisoner who has a yellow bird. He introduces himself to new prisoners and learns something about them. He then (she thinks) releases the bird who then returns with stories related to new prisoners' lives. Upon discovering he has cancer, he passes the bird along to a new inmate, letting him in on he secret that the bird is mechanical, made from the elders watchmaking skills.
Any ideas? This was read in about 1997 but may have been published earlier.

I found the answer on another site. It is "yellachile's cage" by Robert R. McCammon from the collection Blue World. The collection is worth seeking out but may not be easy to find.
