The River Burns. This is some of the finest modern novel writing I have read. There is no 'character building' or 'character development'; you are just reading about people, and they are whole before your very eyes. It is about people who live in a small town, in Quebec, divided by heritage and logging. It could be anywhere, with any division - old vs new - but it is here, and it is good. The author has a vocabulary and a way with words not seen in many modern "best seller" books. He just takes you along, effortlessly, with the people and their lives.
