There is a cannabis resin stain on a very rare book. This was caused by my own enthusiasm and replacement is not an option. In an effort to correct my error I used alcohol to remove the resin. The majority was taken off without mar, but two spots required a second pass: the result was an alleviation of the color of both the stain and the page itself, partial removal of the page's gloss, and saturation of the resin. The damage is not significant, but there are several lingering stains.

I would like to remove the remainder of the stain which has soaked into the paper and gloss the damaged sections, if such a thing is possible.

Advice is needed,

The Solecist.

Hi -
I have removed stains in the same manner that I clean oil paintings - with a toothpick with a tiny bit of real cotton ball wrapped around the tip and dipped in acetone or alcohol depending on paint. My concern is the gloss - I work at a production letterpress printshop and I happen to know a great deal about paper (not by choice but by 10 years of exposure). Gloss paper or Coated paper has been coated with a varnish. So the stain broke the varnish barrier into the pulp - once the pulp of paper has been saturated as when its stained and when you add anything to it like alcohol - it spreads - it has no choice, paper is porous. It sounds like you have been successful in removing the stains. A varnish could be air brushed on without a great deal of buildup - that would be my main concern - the buildup of varnish. If you are going to attempt air brushing the varnish, my first idea was to use air brush medium(it comes in gloss and matt). If you could find out what paper it is (mill and type) I could tell you the exact varnish you would need.My boss could hold it in her hand and tell you (she's that good). We work with a few trade printers that varnish jobs for us when the job requires it. It would just be a phone call to get the varnish information for you. Glad to help if I can.
