The Angel with Burnt Wings
Scarlett Jensen

Have any of you read "Orange is the New Black" by Piper Kerman?
My book will give you an ultimately unforgettable, and rewarding read, if you are interested in a similar story. You meet Alice in Prisonland, her horrific experiences and growth to overcome the challenges to encounter a life worth living in every aspect of the concept.

A quote from Alice: " I escaped to my little haven inside my body where nobody could touch me. There I would create an element of freedom."

A similarly rewarding thing would be for you to not treat this site as free advertising. Unless the only book you own or have read is the one you wrote?

Yes, it is one of the few places on this site where writers can announce books they’ve written, and talk about awards, reviews etc that their work may have gathered. However the tolerance for authors who only bother to promote themselves, without taking part in non-self-serving discussions, and who only bother to catalogue their own books, is very low. We usually refer to such people as ‘drive-by authors’, and they have almost destroyed this group. And until fairly recently there was NO place on the site where writers were allowed to promote their work quite so blatantly.

If you want to take part in this community, then great. Catalogue some of the books you own – that’s what this place is for, after all. And it will show others what sort of things you read, and give some sort of inkling into what your own book may be like. Take part in discussions, and not just to pump-and-dump your own book. But you get pretty much zero credibility if the only thing you do is self-promotion (especially as you appear to have reviewed your own book.)

The people here are pretty discerning, and passionate about books. But we are not a passive target for marketing to.

I guess nothing's changed since I went on sabbatical from LibraryThing. I guess there will always be writers who want you to know their book(s) and nothing else about them. I almost always read a book after I've learned something about the author and what he or she is interested in - I like to make those people my colleagues and friends. That being written, Scarlett, what compelled you to write "The Angel with Burnt Wings?"

Can I briefly hijack this conversation to say welcome back, Ellen? :)

In rebus 6 atque 7, may I add my AMEN? I too have been away -- vexed by almost incomprehensible problems of 'net-access, plus disgust over waves of rudeness on LT-- but am glad to know that EE is back. Peace, y'all -- Goddard ("Harry")
