I am a re-reader. It's sometimes all I can do. I like my new books a LOT, but it takes time and energy to dedicate to finding and reading them. So, I am joining this list in the hopes that at least HALF of my reads in 2014 are new books - I shall be crawling for recommendations!

Surprisingly, 2014 has gotten off to a REALLY good start in that area (it helps that I got $60 to Barnes & Noble for Christmas) and I have thus far read (just for my sake, I'm going identify all my re-reads):

ACT ONE, WISH ONE by Mindy Klasky (through the Early Reviewer program, which helps the goal to read new things a LOT)
THE GOLDEN DOOR by Emily Rodda
THE SILVER DOOR by Emily Rodda
THE THIRD DOOR by Emily Rodda

In progress:
THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD AND EVIL by Soman Chainani
CONJURED by Sarah Beth Durst
DIGITAL DIVIDE by KB Spangler (re-read, the next book is coming out in March)

I tend to read several books at a time. I love series (as you might have guessed), so I look forward to not only discovering new books, but new SERIES of books that you all might be reading! I tend to read YA fiction because it's something I'm passionate about, I used to work with young adults, and because the literature there is SO DARN GOOD. But, I also love adult works, creative non-fiction, and classics. Just good books, basically.

:D

2014 Book Count: 4/75 ; 5% complete ; 4 new, 0 re-reads

I'm one who always has multiple books going at once, too. Keeps things interesting, doesn't it? Ha!
Also, I think you'll find that adding new series to your TBR pile will definitely *not* be a problem in this group...

Okie doke! Finished DIGITAL DIVIDE by KB Spangler this week (took longer than I liked, but oh well). I would feel accomplished, except that I added several books to my "read" list.

In Progress:
MAZE by J. M. McDermott (my most recent Early Reviewer book)
THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD AND EVIL by Soman Chainani
CONJURED by Sarah Beth Durst

To Read:
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS by John Green (re-read, the movie is coming out in June)
SPIRIT ANIMALS BOOK 1: WILD BORN by Brandon Mull (re-read, the second book was just released)
SPIRIT ANIMALS BOOK 2: HUNTED by Maggie Steifvater
The Wereworld Series by Curtis Jobling (three re-reads (too much time between the original read to just pick up the series), three new reads)
THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH by Norton Juster (re-read, I just watched the documentary)

2014 Book Count: 5/75 ; 6.6667% complete ; 4 new, 1 re-read

I see that you're planning on reading the two Spirit Animals books. I just finished the second one today...was pretty good. Hopefully you enjoy them too! (I'll come back and tell you when I've got the review posted to my thread, in case you're interested.)

Finished:
MAZE by J.M. McDermott I flat-out hated this book, unfortunately. But it is finished.
THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD AND EVIL by Soman Chainani I LOVED THIS BOOK AND EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.
CONJURED by Sarah Beth Durst This was intensely creepifying and I loved it.
WISHING IN THE WINGS (previously know as: WHEN GOOD WISHES GO BAD) by Mindy Klasky A fun, light-hearted follow up to the first novel.

In Progress:
SPIRIT ANIMALS BOOK 1: WILD BORN by Brandon Mull (re-read in prep for second book)

To Read:
The "Kid Lit" shelf on my Nook. Comes out to ten books that I need to knock out (includes second Spirit Animals book and the 6 book Wereworld Series from previous post).
THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH by Norton Juster (re-read)
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS by John Green (re-read before June)
MAKER SPACE by K. B. Spangler (comes out March 3, will include link at that time)

2014 Book Count: 9/75 ; 12% complete ; 8 new, 1 re-read

Wow, good job, Joie!

10rjlouise
Fév 24, 2014, 7:52 pm

Finished:
EAST by Edith Pattou (re-read, novelization 1 of 3 of EAST OF THE SUN, WEST OF THE MOON by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, my favorite faerie tale - I've not read these in a couple years and I felt like a retreat into familiar territory)

In Progress:
ICE by Sarah Beth Durst (re-read, novelization 2 of 3 (see above))
SUN AND MOON, ICE AND SNOW by Jessica Day George (re-read, novelization 3 of 3 (see above))
SPIRIT ANIMALS BOOK 1: WILD BORN by Brandon Mull (re-read in prep for second book)

To Read:
Kid Lit shelf on Nook (10 books, see previous posts)
THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH by Norton Juster (re-read)
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS by John Green (re-read)
MAKER SPACE by K. B. Spangler (comes out March 3, will include link at that time)
ALTERED CARBON by Richard K. Morgan (this may be on the list for a while - the wait list at the library is pretty long)
HERO'S SONG by Edith Pattou
FIRE ARROW by Edith Pattou

As you can see, the "To Read" list is getting pretty long. Of the sixteen books on that list, eleven are new books, which is really good. I have so many books I'd love to re-read, but I think I want to make sure I'm reading twice as many new books as re-reads, so I need to add a few more new reads to the list before I move on to those.

2014 Book Count: 10/75; 13.3333% complete; 8 new, 2 re-reads

11rjlouise
Mar 3, 2014, 4:32 pm

Finished:
ICE by Sarah Beth Durst (re-read) I forgot how much I love this book. It was a pleasure to re-read.
SUN AND MOON, ICE AND SNOW by Jessica Day George (re-read) This one is so fun, and follows the source story closest.
SPIRIT ANIMALS BOOK 1: WILD BORN by Brandon Mull (re-read) Still a great way to start a series.
SPIRIT ANIMALS BOOK 2: HUNTED by Maggie Stiefvater

In Progress (hopefully to be done by the end of the week):
MAKER SPACE by K.B. Spangler (New book release, I have been salivating for this one!)
EVIL GENIUS by Patricia Rice (I got the second book in the series in February's Early Review bids, I need to read this one first)
UNDERCOVER GENIUS by Patricia Rice (I got this through February's Early Review bids.)
DANGEROUS INDENTURE by Kelli A. Wilkins (I got this through February's Early Review bids.)

To Read:
Kid Lit Shelf on Nook (9 books left, see previous posts)
SCHEHERAZADE'S FACADE edited by Michael M. Jones (I received this as a gift, it's an anthology of gender-focused sci-fi stories.)
CORDELIA'S HONOR by Lois McMaster Bujold (Someone recommended I read this due to my particular interests.)
ALTERED CARBON by Richard K. Morgan (A friend recommended this to me. Waiting on the library.)
HERO'S SONG by Edith Pattou
FIRE ARROW by Edith Pattou (I cannot believe it has taken me this long to look into her other books.)
THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH by Norton Juster (re-read) (poor re-read books keep getting pushed back - but that's AWESOME)
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS by John Green (re-read) (I really do need to re-read this one before June.)

Okay, this is getting ridiculous. But, that's kind of the point, right? To build a list of books, mostly new to me, that I can read before the end of the year. I'm just worried that the list will compound and I'll never get it all done. I want to get those four "in progress" books done by the end of the week so I am firmly ahead of what I NEED to be doing every week in order to be on track to read 75 books a year (also to improve my new/re-read ratio). I want to get ahead mostly because I know my summer and fall are going to be crazy busy with work and wedding planning (did NOT know that was going to be something I was doing when I decided to do this).

2014 Book Count: 14/75; 18.6667% complete; 9 new, 5 re-reads

Finished:
MAKER SPACE by K.B. Spangler
EVIL GENIUS by Patricia Rice
UNDERCOVER GENIUS by Patricia Rice
DANGEROUS INDENTURE by Kelli A. Wilkins
THE FAMILIARS by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson

In Progress:
THE FAMILIARS series by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson (three books; all new)

To Read (in particular order, but subject to change):
SKY RAIDERS by Brandon Mull
SPIRIT ANIMALS: BLOOD TIES by Garth Nix
The Wereworld Series by Curtis Jobling (six books; three old, three new)
THE GIRL WHO CIRCUMNAVIGATED FAIRYLAND IN A SHIP OF HER OWN MAKING by Catherynne M. Valente (new)
SCHEHERAZADE'S FACADE edited by Michael M. Jones (new)
THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH by Norton Juster (re-read)
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS by John Green (re-read, movie comes out in June)

On Hold at the Library (I don't know when I'll read these because I have zero control on when they come in):
ALTERED CARBON by Richard K. Morgan (new)
THE GIRL WHO FELL BENEATH FAIRYLAND AND LED THE REVELS THERE by Catherynne M. Valente (new)
THE GIRL WHO SOARED OVER FAIRYLAND AND CUT THE MOON IN TWO by Catherynne M. Valente (new)
HERO'S SONG by Edith Pattou (new)
FIRE ARROW by Edith Pattou (new)

And this is why I've been delaying doing this post. Because I knew it was going to be out of control. And that I'm SOOOOOO behind (where I want to be, not where I need to be, as noted below). *weeps* But, I hope to get the rest of THE FAMILIARS series done this week (likely) and the new installment of SPIRIT ANIMALS (also likely, I think) as well. The rest of the reading will be determined by whether or not I get books from the library and which ones I get. I only get three weeks when I check out a book, which isn't a big deal except when they all come in at once. So, we shall see how this goes. Also, there are a TON of books that aren't in the "To Read" list that I WANT to put in the "To Read" list, but it's so ridiculous already that I just need to limit it to what I've got now and I'll put more on the list as I finish things.

2014 Book Count: 19/75; 25.3333% complete (I am slightly ahead of schedule as the year is only 23.0136% over, HAH!); 14 new, 5 re-reads (more than the 2:1 new to re-read ratio I was hoping to maintain - whoopeeeeee)

*You may notice one the of the "To Read" books has been taken off the list . . . it's not on there because my library doesn't have it. :(

I know it's been a while (almost two months, shame on me), but for good reason - I've been kicking shelves and taking names! I've finished a TON of books, all of them new and am well on my way to drowning under a "To Be Read" list that will not quit. I fully intend NOT to add anything new (except for Early Review books or new releases I've been planning to get) until that list down there is completely read, but my goodness that will be difficult. People keep recommending awesome books! But, even if I'm drowning under a pile of novels, I'm happy with where I am right now.

Finished (in no particular order):

THE FAMILIARS: CIRCLE OF HEROES by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson
THE FAMILIARS: PALACE OF DREAMS by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson

MR. LOVERMAN by Bernardine Evaristo
TALKER 25 by Joshua McCune
THE GIRL WHO CIRCUMNAVIGATED FAIRYLAND IN A SHIP OF HER OWN MAKING by Catherynne M. Valente
THE GIRL WHO FELL BENEATH FAIRYLAND AND LED THE REVELS THERE by Catherynne M. Valente

PERFECT PITCH by Mindy Klasky
CATCHING HELL by Mindy Klasky
REACHING FIRST by Mindy Klasky
HERO'S SONG by Edith Pattou

SHADES OF MILK AND HONEY by Mary Robinette Kowal (new, if I like it, the rest of the Glamour Histories series will soon follow, too)
THE LAND OF STORIES: THE WISHING SPELL by Chris Colfer (new, first in a series I thought I'd try)
THE STARS CHANGE by Mary Anne Mohanraj (new, this comes highly recommended by a friend)
SERAPHINA by Rachel Hartman (re-read, I'm having a craving)
SCHEHERAZADE'S FACADE edited by Michael M. Jones (new)
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS by John Green (re-read, the movie is almost here)
The Wereworld Series by Curtis Jobling (3 re-reads, 3 new)
THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH by Norton Juster (re-read, poor thing keeps getting put off)
WISH UPON A STAR by Mindy Klasky (new, sequel to a couple previous Early Review wins)
SHADOW SPINNER by Susan Fletcher (new, author I love, book of hers that I've not read)
VESSEL by Sarah Beth Durst (re-read, I'm having a craving)
TOOTH AND CLAW by Jo Walton (new, recommended by a friend)
The Seraphina Parrish series by Michelle Warren (3 new)
Tackle the rest of my teen lit shelf, which should be about 8 new books, when all's said and sifted.
The Dragon Chronicles by Susan Fletcher (re-read, I'm having a craving - going to try something new, read them in reverse chronological order (series order 4,3,1,2))
THE MARTIAN by Andy Weir (recommended by my sister)
THE LAST DRAGONSLAYER by Jasper Fforde (recommended by my sister, second book to be added if I like it)
Lynn Gardner's Gems and Espionage series (10 books, all re-reads, I'm having a craving)
Kerry Blair's Heart series (3 books, all re-reads, I'm a sucker for baseball romances and the three Mindy Klasky novels above put me in the mood - this is an old favorite)
Wings of Fire series by Tui T. Sutherland (5 books, all new)

On Hold at the Library:
PHILOMENA by Martin Sixsmith (new)

As you can see - I am VERY busy. But this makes for AWESOME stats!

2014 Book Count: 39/75; 52% complete (the year is 39% complete, just for comparison); 34 new, 5 re-reads (almost a 7:1, new:re-read ratio)

And I have, by my count, at LEAST 59 books on the To Be Read list (that's if a couple series I'm starting don't pan out and not counting any new Early Review books I might get). So, I must remind myself that IF I don't finish list TBR list by the end of the year, I'm still doing AWESOME. Over 50% complete! I am as ahead of the curve as I wished to be entering the busy summer season.

17connie53

Thanks, Connie! I'm sure getting there! :D And the reason my TBR list is so short is because I JUST finally broke down and started writing it down. Oh, how it is blowing up.

PHILOMENA by Martin Sixsmith (new)

The holiday weekend has one more day. I hope to get at least two more books read before tomorrow ends, but I'm also celebrating the fiancé's birthday, so we'll see how it goes. I'm going on vacation later this week; I fully plan on bringing many books with me to read (probably the new Early Review books will take priority, if I get any) and hopefully that will get me WELL ahead of schedule. This is really my last respite before the big summer season rush at work. I need to get as ahead as I possibly can.

2014 Book Count: 43/75; 57% complete; 37 new, 6 re-reads (just over 6:1, new:re-read ratio)

P.S. I didn't tag the touchstones this post because there is not a single new thing.

To Be Read (in no particular order):
I gave in and made a page for it on my blog. It's intense, just warning you now.
http://storyandstrategyreviewsbyjoie.wordpress.com/to-be-read/

On Hold at the Library:
Nothing, right now. I'm trying to finish what's in front of me.

As you can see in my TBR list, I am in search of new series to enjoy. I sort of love the agony of waiting, as weird as that sounds. I say this, of course, as I get the latest, and final, installment in a book by a favorite author and I HURT.

2014 Book Count: 96/75; 128% complete; 83 new, 13 re-reads (almost 6.5:1, new:re-read ratio)

So, the good news is: I've completed the challenge before my wedding and still have lots of plans to continue reading this year (and while part of me wants to see if I can get to 200% complete, I don't think I'm quite THAT crazy).

The bad-good news is: I've started tracking my reading data in a modified version of the document provided at http://bookriot.com/2014/09/18/track-reading-ultimate-reading-spreadsheet/. I'm noticing a distinct lack of diversity. I've perhaps been favoring women TOO much and my authors of color are abysmally low. Considering I was trying to get more diversity in my reading, that's disappointing. At least I saw where my flaw in seeking diversity was: I was paying too much attention to diversity of character and ignoring diversity of author. Now, I know I need to look for both!

The bad news is: I've finally started tracking my TBR list and it is SO LONG. I'm never going to finish it.

Ah, the problems of a bibliophile.

2014 Book Count: 123/75; 164% complete; 106 new reads, 17 re-reads (ending with a 6.2:1 new read to re-read ratio - I'm happy with that)

Books unfinished: I know I ended the year with two books unfinished, which I am still actively trying to finish. There were five books I just had to put down this year, but that I have full intentions of going back to once the time is right.

In 2015: I plan on doing the 75 books in a year challenge again and to improve my new read to re-read ratio even more! Also, I have noticed that I don't read as many books by authors of color or LGBT authors as I would like. They're in there, for sure, but nowhere near the amount I want to. So, my goal is next year to get those percentages up and running. I have a master plan that I hope improves those numbers. I also want to read more books outside my comfort zone, so I've found several reading lists to help with that goal. Also, this year I was SO CLOSE and yet SO FAR from making it to a full 200% complete on this challenge. While I don't want to completely push myself and ruin the enjoyment of reading, I also want to see if I can read a full 150 books this year. :D Thanks for such fun this year!
