Coach of Alva's books for 2014

Question Is a graphic stories collection, volume three of Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Does this count as a book?

Sure. I've got several on my stack to read and plan to count them.

Is this how you start a thread on the 75 books challenge? If it isn't, then please, some kind person tell me how to.

Yep, this is how you do it! I add messages to my thread as I go to describe each book. Others will edit the first message to keep a list in one place. Some even use a mix of both methods! Browse around on some threads and you'll see some examples.

Oh my, I love *all* of those reads! I can't wait to see what else you'll be reading this year!

I suffer from having too many interests. I do love to read translations of the Greek and Latin classics. I've read 5 of the Metamorphoses, 6 of the Iliad, 4 of the Odyssey. Question: can you read them in the original languages?

I didn't read the instructions before I set up my thread. Is there some way I can re-title it?

>13 Coach_of_Alva:: I can and do. I'm a classicist by trade, so, well, yeah, it's just what I do. I frequently re-read them in translation, too, though. Do you have a favorite translator?

>14 Coach_of_Alva:: I don't think so, but I wouldn't worry about it, plus you'll have a chance to fix it, if you like, when you hit, 150-200 posts (somewhere in there), and then an option will pop up at the end of the thread for you to start a new thread, which you can re-name.

Alexander Pope and Augustan translators in general; Allen Mandelbaum; and Richmond Lattimore. The latter has a special fondness for me since I first began to love the Iliad while reading his version. By contrast, I hate Samuel Butler. His was the first translation of the Iliad I read, and I ended up thinking the epic was silly. What is your opinion in general of Victorian translators? Their work has become available on Amazon in cheap versions but I suspect they may not be worth getting at any price.

Oh, I am fond of Mandelbaum, too. And I have the same fondness for Lattimore and for the same reason!
I'd stay clear of the Victorians, honestly, for the archaic language. Stanley Lombardo is my absolute favorite translator of Homer, Vergil and Ovid.

I'll take your warning about Victorian translations of classical literature. I will admit that I like reading Edward Fitzgerald and Richard Burton. I know that Burton overwrote horribly but I still like reading him.
