What are you reading in 2014?

Finished a good one today: Saints of the Shadow Bible by Ian Rankin. Both Rebus and Rankin are on top of their game!

I've just settled in to reading Saints of the Shadow Bible. So glad Rebus is back.

Finished The Hurting Distance by Sophie Hannah and thought it was a good read. I'd only read one other book by her before and hadn't thought it that good, but I'll look for more now at my library.

The Book of the Dead by RObert Richardson

Just finished A Dying Fall by Elly Griffiths. Love the character, Ruth, and always enjoy the books in this series.

Found another Sophie Hannah novel at my library, wish there were more available. This one was The Point of Rescue and I really liked it.

The Funeral Owl by Jim Kelly. I think I've read something by this author years ago, but this is the only one of his Phillip Dryden series that I've read. I really enjoyed it-now I have to start at the beginning of the series-this one is apparently the 7th.

One of my favourite authors; just wish I could like the detective in this series! The Shadows in the Street by Susan Hill.

Garnethill by Denise Mina. This was a big hit with me; really enjoyed the characters, the dark humour, the grittiness and the social themes.

Put On by Cunning by Ruth Rendell. Not a great one; I thought it pretty boring.

The Water Clock by Jim Kelly. Fair to good rating; I like the descriptive writing and the humour, but the suspense just wasn't there for me in this one.

The latest in one of my favourite series: The Outcast Dead by Elly Griffiths.

A good psychological thriller: The Innocent Sleep by Karen Perry

A very so-so read: Stone Killer by Sally Spencer.

I'm feeling lonely - the only one posting here for some time- where is everyone else and what are you reading?

I just read The Black- Eyed Blonde by Benjamin Black, author of the Quirke series, and really liked it.

I just ordered the Hamish Macbeth series from Better World Books ( 26 volumes ) and am looking forward to starting to read them in order. I have the series on DVD and greatly enjoyed it. I love British, Irish and Scottish mysteries. It seems our relatives from across the big pond are much better at writing and portraying on video great cozy mysteries.

My last mystery was The Red Road by Denise Mina which was wonderful. I really enjoy the character Alex Morrow. Before that, I read The Cold, Cold Ground by Adrian McKinty, a mystery set in Northern Ireland that was OK, but not as good as I thought it would be.

18. Glad to know I'm not alone in this group! I too, really like Denise Mina's novels; they appeal to me despite the grimness and bleakness of the stories-I find quite a lot of humour in them, actually. I've just requested The Red Road from the library.

I just finished the second novel in the Philip Dryden mystery series: The Fire Baby by Jim Kelly. Not great, but fairly decent read.

The Red Road by Denise Mina. I really like her novels, despite their grittiness, or maybe because of that.

The Burning by Jane Casey

Just finished Where the Bodies are Buried by Christopher Brookmyre and starting on the sequel When the Devil Drives and enjoying them both, although many other fans of his previous hard-boiled screwball style novels were lukewarm about these.

Just finished Tara French's latest novel; I absolutely love her books. This one is not my favourite of hers, but good nonetheless: The Secret Place.

New writer, for me, anyway: Cath Staincliffe. The novel was Dead to Me. Good read. If you're a fan of the Scott and Bailey TV series, you'll like this prequel to the TV show.

No one's reading British or Irish crime fiction anymore??? I just finished The Beat Goes On by Ian Rankin- a complete collection of his Rebus short stories, and I really enjoyed it.

I'm looking for more British and Irish crime fiction just now and shall probably try something by Tara French.

Re Denise Mina: I agree.... very gritty. A bit too much grit for me actually.

I read another one in the Philip Dryden mystery series: The Moon Tunnel by Jim Kelly. I normally quite like his writing-I find it descriptive and almost lyrical at times, but I couldn't quite get into the story in this one.

Reading The Secret Place by Tana French. About a fifth of the way into it and am tiring of all the teenage characters. They are all, like, OMG, so not interesting.

re @30. Yes, I agree-normally I absolutely love Tana French's books, but the teenage conversation in the The Secret Place really drove me crazy as well.
