"Bleak House is a novel by Charles Dickens, published in 20 monthly instalments between March 1852 and September 1853. It is held to be one of Dickens's finest novels, containing one of the most vast, complex and engaging arrays of minor characters and sub-plots in his entire canon. The story is told partly by the novel's heroine, Esther Summerson, and partly by a mostly omniscient narrator. Memorable characters include the menacing lawyer Tulkinghorn, the friendly but depressive John Jarndyce, and the childish and disingenuous Harold Skimpole, as well as the likeable but imprudent Richard Carstone."

I am trying to continue a trend, on kicking off the year with a classic chunkster. Last year, we did Anna Karenina. I know this is not easy to do, while a mountain of books are staring down at us, with hope and anxiety, but at least we can put one classic behind us and then move along.

This will be an easy-going book read, like most of mine are. Read at your own pace and take the whole month of January, if need be and even longer, if necessary. I'll probably start around the 10th, give or take.

I'm guessing Richard will be jumping right in with both feet... :)

Added to group read list on the wiki.

Good morning and happy new year Bleak House readers! Thanks for setting this up, Mark.
I started this chunkster last year and I've fallen in love with it. I find it very hard to put down and look forward to chatting about it in the weeks to come.

Thanks Mark for setting this up, I will start in some time, and I will take more than January to finish this one, I am thinking March.

I agree Jim, it would be difficult to keep Richard out of here, why don't you do him a favour and direct him to this place :)

Did that, nearly lost a finger. Lesson for the day: don't poke the bear before he's had coffee. :)

Seems this is a popular selection for a group read, we're also reading it in the 2014 category challenge.

it'll be interesting to compare the discussions.

I know this is ridiculous and I will take the entire blame, but there is another Group Read thread for Bleak House, for the month of January. What are the chances? You might have a better chance winning Powerball! Here is the link and if you could shift your interest over there, it would be much appreciated. Sorry, for the kerfuffle.

So? Do we close this group? Or follow one or both? Either works for me, I am already following some other threads, there at the Category Challenge.

Piyush- We'll just close this one down. It will make it easier. There are more folks already established on the first one. Sorry!

I do like my covers, though! LOL.
