Drat. I managed to not change the numbering for the thread title. Anyone know how I go back and fix it?
3.Monkey.
You can only change the title of a thread for a minute or two after creation. Once that passes, it's set for good.
5pinkozcat
That quote was from The Last Continent.
6Beorn_se_Bacaire
And if, perchance, it is not The Last Continent, I will go for Interesting Times.
7joannasephine
Beorn has it – it was indeed Interesting Times, although I can see why you thought it was Last Continent, Pinkozcat.
8Beorn_se_Bacaire
Ah, Rincewind and his hallucinations of potatoes...
"Actually, prawns are quite intell--"...
"Actually, prawns are quite intell--"...
9Beorn_se_Bacaire
Bump?
11Beorn_se_Bacaire
Incorrect, madam(oiselle?).
12pinkozcat
AT my age is would be Madam even if I was unmarried. It becomes a courtesy title eventually.
Can I try The Last Continent again. I am Australian and it is my default answer anyway.

13Beorn_se_Bacaire
Noted :D
You can try The Last Continent....and will still be wrong. Right idea, though.

15Beorn_se_Bacaire
Nyet.
16guido47
It does sound like the sort of thing Rincewind would say...
No Idea, but Pinko, I though your default answer was Unseen Academicals
So I'll try that.

17pinkozcat
Ah - sorry - The last Continent is my fallback default. I didn't think that there were any prawns in the academic world.
The Colour of Magic?
The Colour of Magic?
18Beorn_se_Bacaire
Neither. Let me know when it's time for a hint.
19joannasephine
I have a vague feeling it's got something to do with the Patrician and the concept of information transmission ... The Truth?
20Beorn_se_Bacaire
Incorrect...it has nothing to do with the Patrician.
Nahkis has gotten the closest guess so far...

22Beorn_se_Bacaire
Nobody has, but that's not it.
"Actually, prawns are quite intell--" continued The Senior Wrangler
(that may be slightly off, but that IS who was saying it)

24Beorn_se_Bacaire
Still no.
26Beorn_se_Bacaire
That's the one! Over to Nahkis
29pinkozcat
It is always quiet at the weekends. Don't panic yet.
I'll guess The Colour of Magic to start the ball rolling

And to bracket you, Pinko, Pratchetts number 40, Raising Steam which I know isn't it.
I don't understand the critism of that book. Yes, not as many footnotes/quips/immediate funnies. But Sir T has matured. And to my mind is writing more thoughtful novels.
Guido.
PS. Just finished reading #40.
Sorry no guess. No idea.

31pinkozcat
I have read 17% of #40 but haven't deleted it from my e-reader so I may get back to it sometime. I really haven't liked his later books all that much but so far I have finished what I started so there is still hope.
32Nahkis
Thanks, pinko, for the reminder. And I suppose that with all the different time zones, the weekend quiet can escalate.
But no, it's not The Colour of Magic.
But no, it's not The Colour of Magic.
33guido47
An aside to Pinko (whilst I am watching cricket!) ...how did you come up with 17%? Is it a function of an e-reader thingy?...
36pinkozcat
This one should be reasonably easy.
"I want as few deaths as possible. Those who enjoy it, perhaps. But only those."
"I want as few deaths as possible. Those who enjoy it, perhaps. But only those."
38pinkozcat
No - not night Watch
49AngelaB86
"It was written in some holy book, apparently, so that made it okay, and probably compulsory."
53pinkozcat
I think that we are all a bit busy right now. I'll put my mind to it and try to come out with something likely.
In the meanwhile I'll use my #1 default answer: Unseen Academicals?
In the meanwhile I'll use my #1 default answer: Unseen Academicals?
57pinkozcat
Default #2 The Last Continent?
65AngelaB86
Time for a hint (which will probably give it away): “None of these lads here were out getting fighting drunk last night. And thus we wear down mountains."
67joannasephine
Or Thud?
70joannasephine
Hooray! And Happy Hogswatch!
"A gin and tonic's always welcome," said --- distantly.
"A gin and tonic's always welcome," said --- distantly.
71Beorn_se_Bacaire
I haven't the foggiest...Snuff?
73joannasephine
No and no. I'll add the missing name:
"A gin and tonic's always welcome," said Angua distantly".

76joannasephine
Edranrew has it! Feet of Clay it was.
78pinkozcat
I'll try #2 default. The Last Continent?
83pinkozcat
*sigh* No-one else willing to take this up?
If you don't know where you come from, then you don't know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, then you don't know where you are going.
If you don't know where you come from, then you don't know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, then you don't know where you are going.
86Beorn_se_Bacaire
Wyrd Sisters? sounds like a Granny-ism.
87pinkozcat
Witches, yes but not Wyrd Sisters
89pinkozcat
No - not Witches Abroad
90pinkozcat
This should narrow it down. Is anyone even interested any more?
She had even stood up to Granny Weatherwax for this necklace! And now she held the necklace like an accusation. "The past needs to be remembered. If you don't know where you come from, then you don't know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, then you don't know where you are going."

No - not Equal Rites
93ronincats
You know, I really need to reread the witch books again--I know them the least well of all the series, I think.
94pinkozcat
#93 I need to read them all again, not just the witch books. But I am struggling with Raising Steam and doubt if I will ever finish it. So sad ...
95joannasephine
It's Tiffany, I'm sure of it. But which book? Wintersmith?
96pinkozcat
Not Wintersmith, but ...
99ronincats
Oh, NOT The Wee Free Men? I'd ruled that one out ages ago. Not wisely, obviously.
101ronincats
Okay, THAT one makes sense. When you said "warmer" going from Wintersmith to A Hat Full of Sky, I thought we were going in the opposite direction.
I Shall Wear Midnight was a great wrap-up to the series, imho.

104pinkozcat
I would guess - and it is only a guess Monstrous Regiment.
108joannasephine
The sign of the ghost??? Maskerade??????
112Strattegif
Reaper Man, or a book later than that? (hah)
113ronincats
It is indeed Reaper Man. Congratulations! Your turn.
114Strattegif
Hurray, here's one: 'There'd been that man down in Spackle, the one that'd killed tose little kids. '
115joannasephine
Granny, reflecting on the perils of being righteous? Witches Abroad?
116Strattegif
No, it isn't Witches Abroad. You are on the right track, though. You're two off to being right which is too off to be right. Rather cryptic; but there's something in it.
---( Am I supposed to wait; say one or two posts before I start giving hints? Or is there absolute freedom in these matters? )---

118Strattegif
No, not Men at Arms, sorry. I'm afraid I was rather sleepy, or terribly so, when I last posted and my hints probably do more harm than good. Best to forget all I said in there. (I think I'll even scrap it, come to think of it.)
All but the fact that joannasephine nearly got it really. :P
It's not:}
Witches Abroad, Men at Arms.

119AngelaB86
I scrolled up to read the quote again, and realized I was guessing for the wrong one! Whoops!
120joannasephine
Carpe Jugulum?
(The usual thing is to start offering hints after it's been a couple of days of wrong answers, or if no-one tries to guess for a while. And welcome to the game!)

joannasephine got it right, Carpe Jugulum it is.
(Thanks for the welcome!)

123joannasephine
Hooray!
'I am a harmless old seller of apples,' she said, in a voice more appropriate for the opening hostilities in a middle-range war. 'Pray let me past, dearie.'

125joannasephine
Yes indeedy. Your turn, Pinkozcat!
126pinkozcat
This suggested that the Universe had probably been put together in a bit of a rush by an underling while the Supreme Being wasn't looking, in the same way that Boy Scouts' Association minutes are done on office photocopiers all over the country.
127pinkozcat
But since the universe was a bit of a mess, it was obvious that the Supreme Being hadn't in fact made it. If he had made it he would, being Supreme, have made a better job of it, with far better thought given, taking an example at random, to things like the design of the common nostril. Or, to put it another way, the existence of a badly put-together watch proved the existence of a blind watchmaker. You only had to look around to see that there was room for improvement practically everywhere.

128ronincats
I really have absolutely no idea, which is why I hadn't put in a guess after the first part of the quote. But since I don't remember it at all, I'll guess that it comes from one of the very early books and guess The Light Fantastic.
129joannasephine
Or Eric?
131pinkozcat

So, reasoned Koomi, it was not a good idea to address any prayers to a Supreme Being. It would only attract his attention and might cause trouble.
And yet there seemed to be a lot of lesser gods around the place.

132ronincats
Pyramids or Small Gods seem the logical choices.
133pinkozcat
Which one do you think it is?
Edited to say that it is Small Gods so it is over to you, ronincats. I don't want to prolong things.

"Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry."
135Strattegif
Is it The Last Continent?
137Beorn_se_Bacaire
The Light Fantastic? The quote is familiar, but have no idea where I read it (once again).
143joannasephine
Thief of Time? Lu Tse?
145joannasephine
Should have got it earlier – I only read that one a few months ago.
Ok. I’ve had to cut a detail out of the middle of this quote, as it does give the source away rather thoroughly. If no-one gets it in the first 24 hours, I’ll add the middle bit back in.
‘Of course, it depends on whether the individual you are thinking of is yourself or the one climbing out of the bathroom window with the family silver in a sack.’

Okay, I’ll add the middle bit:

148joannasephine
Indeed. Your turn!
151edrandrew
Million to one chances may happen nine times out of ten on the Disc, but it's not Reaper Man.
152joannasephine
Is it something to do with the Gonnagle? Wee Free Men?
156joannasephine
'I've just thrown up a small, hilarious, paper umbrella ...'
159joannasephine
Nahkis has it!
160Nahkis
Yay!
"It was midnight in the Temple of Om in the Street of Small Gods, and one light burned in the vestry."

161Nahkis
Well, it really has gotten quiet here. No worries, we've got time. Allthough, guessing (or knowing) will not bring forth the wrath of Om, or be an abomination unto Nuggan. You have my word.
162ronincats
Pyramids? Small Gods just seems TOO obvious.
163Nahkis
Thank you ronincats, even though you didn't get it right.
Try to recall where the Street of Small Gods is, that'll get you closer.

164Beorn_se_Bacaire
Going Postal? Although I doubt it.
165Nahkis
Not Going Postal, though it shares similar thematics as the book in question.
166Beorn_se_Bacaire
Making Money, then?
167Nahkis
No, not Making Money.
168joannasephine
The Truth, where Pin and Tulip encounter the work of Futtock? (A silver candlestick.)
170joannasephine
‘Ai only moved it to get things through,’ she said. ‘Now Ai can’t seem to find where the silly thing is supposed to go.’
172Beorn_se_Bacaire
The Last Continent, of course.
173joannasephine
Indeed it is, Beorn. Your turn!
(Apologies for the delay.)

Again, no clear idea, but that won't stop the guessing.

The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents?
176Beorn_se_Bacaire
Incorrect.
178Beorn_se_Bacaire
Not it! But closer.
180Beorn_se_Bacaire
Still wrong...next person should get it though.
182Beorn_se_Bacaire
Ding, ding...
Correct. Over to you, Ozcat :D

A nice easy one to tempt people back to this thread.
I mean, his lordship says we've got two hippos, which is right enough, I'm just saying it's not natural for Roderick and Keith.

Just to get it going, Men at Arms?
190ronincats
"Do you mean that most of them will be human, or that each individual will be mostly human?"
191Beorn_se_Bacaire
Let's try...Thief of Time?
196joannasephine
I'm pretty sure it's Vimes ... Thud?
200ronincats
As an additional hint, allow me to point out that Joanna is definitely on the right track. I really didn't think this one would be difficult.
206joannasephine
If I remember rightly, it’s usually followed by Nanny paying for something with strangely warm coins … Maskerade? (If I’m right, someone else take my go.)
