Well, the falling leaves tell us that the end of the year is approaching, so it's time for our last big pushes to get those ROOTs read!
So, let's keep these tickers (password ROOT) moving with everyone adding their progress to the comprehensive goal for all of us. We need to have a total of 4,960 (92%) by the end of NOVEMBER to stay on track. This is going to be tough!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ticker thread (http://www.librarything.com/topic/148710) is a
huge help in crunching the end of month numbers so if you haven't already posted your ticker there, please do! if there is a * by your name, it indicates there is a ticker on your thread but not on the ticker thread and a & indicates no ticker. This just tells me where I need to go to get the numbers that are not on the ticker thread. I try to keep up on the personal threads during the month, so having to revisit to gather numbers can be a bit time consuming if the system is slow. Any help is appreciated. So if you have a ticker made already , please think about copying the HTML to the ticker thread.
Thanks for your help!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, now, Ladies and Gentlemen, BOOKLOVERS - get back out there and read those BOOKS!
Here are the individual numbers so far. Several members reached their goals this month - them we applaud. We're cheering for everyone but especially those who are almost there! Please let me know if I need to update anyone. I had a few personal threads I couldn't locate for those not on the ticker thread, so I think I need to find them.

Am I first to finish a ROOT for November? Just after midnight, I finished the last few pages of my devotional read, Confessions of a Prayer Slacker by Diane Moody, #59 toward my goal of 60 for the year!
I've started another book that is just plain awful. I'm tempted to count it as done, as I think I'm going to be banishing it from my sight, but I don't want to complete my challenge that way!
I will update the tickers.

3 I don't understand -- if you're ahead of your goal, why does the ticker at the top of your post say you've read 101 of 111?
5moonshineandrosefire
#4 - My total goal for books read in 2013 is 111, and as of the end of October I had read 101. In 2012, I had read a total of 110 books, and I think that Goodreads compares my 2012 and 2013 totals, and then calculates the amount of time that it takes me to read a book - in other words, I'm 9 books ahead of my 2012 goal (end of October 2013 = 101 books read vs end of October 2012 = 92 books read!) :)
6tymfos
Oh! I see! So it's a measure of your pace being ahead of where you need to be to meet your goal. Very good.
7ramblingivy
Sixteen for me, Cheli, not fifteen :-)
9MissWatson
I reached my goal today, my ticker is updated.
12ipsoivan
#45 The Way By Swann's. I really like this new translation. I had read the first 3 books in the series before, but like many, had found them heavy-going. Lydia Davis's translation took off some of the load.
13dudes22
Long weekend away at a wedding gave me lots of time to read in the car and I've got my first 2 for Nov done - Stalking the Angel by Robert Crais and A Single Thread by Marie Bostwick.
14Henrik_Madsen
I started this month off with Patricia D. Cornwell: Hvepsereden (Hornet's Nest). A nice, fast read, and I need some fast reads to reach my goal!

I've reached my goal! Root #60 was Jerusalem Gap, which I loved. I'm updating all tickers.
I will keep reading ROOTs to add to the group totals.

Cheli, I added my ticker to the ticker thread on October 5, so you can take the * away from my name above. I was clueless up to that point. ;-)
I still have 5 to go, and I have new acquisitions and library books in the near future--this will be close!

Sorry, I was doing this more as incentive to myself and not reading a lot of the threads. It's the first time I've read the monthly thread. I hope I updated the ticker thread correctly. Let me know if I didn't.

Just finished my ROOT Challenge with One for the Road by Tony Horwitz. I plan to keep reading past my goal to help with the group goal.
31ipsoivan
>Congratulations, craso! I am soon to follow you, with 2.5 books left to read. I'm already thinking forward to how I will change things for 2014's challenge. Are you planning to participate again?
32tymfos
Congrats to craso from me, too. I see you finished with a Tony Horwitz book. I've enjoyed the ones I've read by him.
34craso
#31 This group really worked for me. It helped me to stay focused on reading the books I've had on my iPad for 1 or 2 years. I will be back next year and this time I'll be adding some paperbacks and hardbacks to the list. :-)
#32 This was the third book I've ready by Horwitz. My favorite is Confederates in the Attic.

Unless, someone else wants to manage the group in 2014, the new group will be created at the beginning of December. I wanted to leave time for everyone to concentrate on those last few ROOTs of the year.
40Henrik_Madsen
#39 I think that's fine - I'm definitely one of those more concerned with this year's challenge. One month should be enough to get the new group going.
41.Monkey.
I'm certainly still working on this year's, I just like planning ahead. I've already made all my 2014 tickers! :P
42laytonwoman3rd
Finished No. 32, Wench by Dolen Perkins-Valdez and No. 33, The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction by Alan Jacobs. My ticker is updated.

>41 .Monkey.: Polymathic Monkey, do you have any good links to share for different tickers? Mine is not really 'me', so I'm looking for alternates.
Cheli--no, please don't feel rushed. I'm happy planning my new reading in January; I certainly don't intend to start on it yet. When I finish, I'll be adding to the group total.

>45 ipsoivan: I just use tickerfactory.com like most of us here, lol. This year I used all grass background with different insects as the markers, this coming year I used one of the backgrounds that has several variations and used the same marker on them all. :P
47ipsoivan
Thanks, PM. I saw that some had books for the background. I think I'll try to find it. It's funny--most of the last 11 months I couldn't have cared less what my ticker looked like, so this must be a measure of how excited to start a new challenge I am. I have really enjoyed this one.
48brewergirl
Made it to my goal of 35 today! :)
51christina_reads
I just finished my 20th ROOT, which means I've reached my goal! But if I read any more ROOTs before the end of the year, I'll definitely post them here as well.

I have already completed Seducers in Ecuador by Vita Sackville-West and The Easter Party by Vita Sackville-West. Will update tickers at month's end per usual. When I finish this one I will be just 6 off my goal. :-)
58HelenBaker
First root for the month taking me to 44/50. I am starting to swap some pre-selected titles for this challenge to some shorter ones as worrying about achieving my goal. The ploy has produced a pleasant surprise for my current read The Legend of Colton H. Bryantby Alexandra Fuller. I like finishing each chapter with a chuckle. Anyone else here read this? Tickers updated.
59HelenBaker
Just noted an exact 2000 to go on this challenge! Hmm... my 6 won't make much of a dent in that but I will force on.

I've just now completed my challenge, reaching my goal of 50 ROOTs. This challenge has been wonderful! I will continue to add my reading to the group ticker, especially as I also joined the 75 Books group, and have quite a few left to read there--about 11 or so, as iI was counting library books and new books that I had read.
67lindapanzo
Not doing well with my ROOTs this month. Too many library books checked out.

I am nearly finished with my 5th ROOT of November, Monday or Tuesday: Eight Stories by Virginia Woolf. I think I have loved nearly everything I have ever read of hers.

Congratulations, Ipsovian!!!
I've just completed my goal of 20 books, too, with Framley Parsonage by Anthony Trollope. Any more tbrs I read this year can go towards the group goal.
Rainpebble, congratulations to you, too, on finishing five tbrs this month. That's a huge accomplishment, considering that the month is only a little more than half over.

Thanks to connie and ramblingivy. Ramblingivy, I'm thinking of reading a lot of Trollope next year, as he has always been a favourite, but I haven't read him for so long, it will be like him for the first time. I don't think I ever read Framley Parsonage.

And thank you ramblingivy.
I have begun my 6th & 7th ROOTs of the month: The Marble Faun and A Green Bough by William Faulkner. I just felt the urge to read something by 'the man' and am in the mood for some poetry. The 2nd book is The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling to cheer me up.

I have met my goal!!! Or at least, I've met my goal for total number of ROOT books read for the year. I've also got a points system going, with older books being worth more points, and I'm still four points shy on meeting my goal for that, but I fully expect to get there soon. Yaaaay!
82Tallulah_Rose
Congratlations to all who've finished their goal this month! I also finished two ROOTs this month and intend to finish at least one more.

Hello everyone! :) Well, Mareena and I went to the library yesterday and raided the Library Book Sale - (hanging my head in shame) between us we bought 101 books (whoo boy!) Oh well! In good news, I finished my 7th book of the month - I'm three away from my goal! :)
92karen_o
Updated with the 2 ROOTs I've read this month and, sadly, I doubt there will be any more for November.
93moonshineandrosefire
#89 - we just managed to get them all back home! :) It took one metal dolly piled up with three cardboard boxes to get them out to the car, plus a plastic bag on top of that with four jigsaw puzzles (another weakness of mine!) Anyway, the two librarians who were assisting us were practically doing Snoopy's happy dance they were so ecstatic! :)
#90 - connie, I have absolutely no idea where we're going to put them all! :) At the moment, the three boxes are stacked in our elevator, and we're just trying to figure out where to put them.
#91 - I'm currently putting my 61 books into my Librarything account, and Mareena will be doing the same with her 40 books later on at some point! Mareena is planning on taking part in next year's challenge. So far, she's read 45 books in 2013, and is just waiting to join next year's challenge along with me! :)

101 books! That's even more than one of my book binges, and that's saying a lot! Good luck finding space to put them -- and happy reading!
95connie53
In the elavator! That's a strange place to put boxes. ;-)) If boxes fit in there, can't you place a bookcase in that spot?

Another one finished - Smokin' Seventeen by Janet Evanovich
97majkia
My second ROOT for November, 65th for the year: The Yard by Alex Grecian. This was right up my alley. Gritty and thought provoking.

#95 - Mareena is in a wheelchair, so that's why we have the elevator, Connie. :) The boxes are cardboard boxes - I think that they're called 'banker's boxes' (the boxes are deep, and have lids) Anyway, right now all three are stacked one on top of another in the back corner of the elevator.
The elevator is only large enough to fit two people comfortably (Mareena in the wheelchair, and myself) - I'm not sure if it may become crowded if I put a bookcase in there as well, but I'll think about it! :)
Anyway, I recounted our 'haul' this morning and came up with a total of 97 books! :) Alright, so the total is less by four, and I still have to find space for all these books, but triple digits have been reduced to double digits! :) So...um...Yay?! :)

Sorry, I did not know about Mareena being in a wheelchair. I have to learn lots of things about all my fellow ROOTers.
But I think it's really funny to have a bookcase (as small as it may be) in your elevator.

#99 - connie, absolutely no need for you to apologize. :) Do they have miniature bookcases? I've never even thought about it.
102tymfos
Cute!
Just be careful -- books are heavy, and elevators have weight limits. A little case like that might be OK - and it does sound cool to have a bookcase, however small, in an elevator!

I think it'd be a riot to have a mini-bookcase in an elevator! hahaha. And if the elevator can hold the boxes of 100 books, I'm sure a mini-case that'd hold just a fraction of them wouldn't be any more weight than the boxes are.

Maybe one of those Little Free Libraries in an elevator?

This thread has turned into a laugh riot. What a wonderful way to begin my morning with a great giggle or two. Storing books in the elevator, who'd a thunk it?
And moonshineandrosefire, I would love to hit a library sale like that one. I'm sure you've got some wonderful finds in those boxes.
On the homefront I have begun my 8th ROOT of the month: Christopher and Columbus by Elizabeth von Arnim and it is quite a lovely (500 page) Tome. I began it on my Kindle on the road and then went to the hard copy when we got home yesterday & I had no idea it was such a chunkster. Hope I can complete it this month what with Thanksgiving & family in, State Football Playoffs and everything that comes along with those busy days.
Will update tickers at month's end per usual.

I love the idea of a Little Free Library in an elevator...I wonder if our landlord at the office building where I work would go for that? Nah...it's the only elevator, so furniture, file cabinets, shredding bins, etc., all get hauled in it; a permanent fixture isn't feasible, I suppose.
Still reading Blue Highways, but finished my ROOT challenge by Pearl-ruling two books today. By my rules, that means they are off my shelf, and therefore count here, though not for my 75 Book Challenge. I have updated my ticker.
1. All Aunt Hagar's Children, a collection of short fiction by Edward P. Jones; this is a disappointment, as I enjoyed his novel, The Known World. I just found the stories I sampled, including the title selection, to be lacking in Story, rambling and uninspired. I suppose I don't "get" what Jones was up to.
2. A World of Ideas II by Bill Moyers; I used to enjoy Bill Moyers's on PBS, but this collection of transcripts of interviews (or those that I sampled) left me cold. Watching them live would probably have been a better experience, like the difference between reading a play and seeing it performed.

I just finished Bel Ami by Guy de Maupassant. So appropriate for Movember, as his moustache is what draws the ladies. Total cad, lots of fun.

Hello again, everyone! :) I just wanted to wish all of you American-based ROOT-ers a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving! May your day be filled with family, friends, fun and food. By the way, I've almost reached my personal goal, but I'll certainly be staying in the challenge! :)

Congratulations Mary. Sounds like you will be meeting goal soon.

I don't think I can fit in more books in November. My report for this month is:
ROOTS 7
Non ROOTS 3
Added 12 (mainly ebooks -- virtual sales are as tempting as real ones)
Making the total ROOTS for 2013 so far: 49
ROOTS for November:
Barry Strauss's Masters of Command
Barbara Pym's An Academic Question
Robert L. O'Connell's The Ghosts of Cannae
Neil Plakcy's The Russian Boy
Agatha Christie's The Man in the Brown Suit
Gary Corby's Sacred Games
Yann Martel's Life of Pi
No tickers were harmed in the compilation of this report.

I won't finish another ROOT this month either, I currently have 2 library books going. I read 5 ROOTS in November which brings me to a total of 30, my goal for the year. Ya hoo!

One final root, Messy: God Likes it That Way by A.J. Swoboda. That makes a total of six for the month, and I think that will be it for November. Updating tickers.
ETA to add I love it when one of my books nudges the group percentage ticker up to the next tenth of a percent! :)

Hello again, everyone, and a very Happy Hannukkah to those of you who are celebrating! :)
Well, as of Friday, November 29th, I have officially reached my personal goal of 111 books read in 2013! :) Although, I will certainly be staying on in this challenge to help boost my fellow ROOT-ers along to greatness! - not to worry! :)
I'm currently reading Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill, and despite being over 255 pages into the story, I thought I'd better give my end-of-the-month totals now, just to be on the safe side.
In keeping with the group theme, here are my November Totals:
Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 7
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 3
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 0 (yes!)
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 86 (20 ebooks)
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 14 (13 books were mine, 1 book was Mareena's)
So far, Cyderry, all my personal tickers are up to date! :)

Sorry, everyone, I'm running a bit behind because of personal issues.
My mom decided that she didn't have enough attention so she fell and fractured her pelvis and L4 vertebrae so she landed in the hospital and rehab facility. Then with the holiday, we had to relocate because of an ice storm, tree down, and power outages, - my life has been a bit hectic the last few days. I truly will try to post the December thread ASAP.

Cheli, I'm so sorry about your mom and your power outage! It certainly sounds like you have a lot to deal with right now. This group is low priority compared to such issues!
129moonshineandrosefire
Oh, my goodness, cyderry! It certainly seems like you have a full plate - I hope that your mom feels better soon, and then to have an ice storm on top of it all with all that that entailed as well - take your time, my friend! :)

I have finished 5 ROOT's this month. 3 of them were recorded books but I have had them on my shelves for long enough that they counted as ROOTs. 1 of the books has been on my TBR shelves since I joined LT five years ago so I am happy with my November totals.
I did not update any tickers.

I completed 7 ROOTs in November which puts me at 46 on my goal of 48 for the year. Just 2 to go!
And I have updated both my personal & the group tickers.

Thanks for your support regarding my Mom. She's doing well, spirits are high but PT twice a day, and OT once a day has her pooped by dinnertime. It also raises pain levels so she gets pretty druggy by the end of the day.
WISHING EVERYONE A GREAT HOLIDAY SEASON!
