A few weeks ago, my husband and I saw the Houston Ballet's enchanting performance of "The Merry Widow" (for the second time, actually -- they performed it a few years ago as well). I want to find a recording of the ballet music, but everything I've found online so far has the vocals from the opera.

I like opera as well -- that is, I'm a true beginner with opera and I'm working at it -- but this time, I truly want only the ballet music.

Anyone? Thanks in advance!

BN.COM doesn't show any CD's of the ballet, but it does respond with a couple of DVD's. I can't tell the difference between them.

You could listen with your eyes closed.

I suppose I should try to appreciate dance.

Good luck,

Robert

^2 Unfortunately, I don't want an opera CD -- the opera CDs all contain the vocals, whereas I want only the instrumental music.

^3 In wild coincidence, the first DVD you linked to is conducted by Ermanno Florio, leading a Canadian orchestra. He is currently our ballet orchestra conductor at the Houston Ballet, so he's the one we've seen performing this twice. :-)

Amy, I am a little busy to do this homework for you, but I would be surprised if there weren't a recording (to meet your needs) conducted by the indefatigable Richard Bonynge. Do a little digging in that direction. Best, -- Goddard/Harry

razzamajazz, I appreciate that you're trying to help, but I do not want the opera. The opera has vocals. I want only instrumental.

Also, I cannot play YouTube in my car's CD player.

There is one CD title on the ballet music version of The Merry Widow by Lehar's opera not performed by Houston Ballet but conducted by John Lanchbery. There is only highlights from the opera - music only.

You are most welcome to receive my help.I am also an
opera's listener, and looking forward to watch especially live performances of mostly Italian, and live ballet performances at concert halls.

There are many surprises you will receive if you have the energy and time to surf the internet, more information you will receive.

There is an actual better CD, a complete ballet version.

Now my only problem is that it looks like the perfect CD (the complete ballet version, I mean) .... and it's definitely out of print. I haven't found a copy for sale yet, but I will keep looking! :-)

By luck, you can still locate and purchase online or some record megastores, such as HMV (do they have stores in US?),Tower Records, B & N,Border?

If you do not mind the second-hand goods, there are actually many websites from UK,USA, or even Europe online companies dealing in used/new CDs,DVDs.

There are many ways to locate sellers of used CDs,have you try Ebay, maybe Amazon online.

Do you know how to burn CD Rom or DVD Rom or copy in a thumb drive storage from your computer? Ask your grandchildren , if they are in their teen ,they are the experts in these things. Leave it to these experts.

You have to subscribe as a member with fees for streaming, and I am not sure whether you can download the music into computer or any other means such as in MP3 format,

Rather late to the game here. I own a copy of this recording (Lanchbery/ Merry Widow Ballet) on LP. Message me if you're still looking.
