I'll be ordering this from the library. I've never read this. Has anyone else?

The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham

I first read it as a teenager, and read it many times since. I haven't read it in the last 15 or 20 years, though, so am looking forward to re-reading it.

Read it yonks ago when computers filled barns and didn't talk to one another. May look for it in the library, as I suspect the copy I had then has long since drowned in the Well of Lost Books.

For some reason I'm fairly sure I read it in french a long while ago, off the library, but can't remember or track down what publisher/cover it might have had. Borrowed a more recent mass-market paperback copy.

Read it maybe four years ago. Enjoyed it. A wee bit dated, but not excessively so.

I re-read this within the last year or so, but may do so again. It is a classic.

3 years ago when I read this one and it certainly deserves its classic status so far as I'm concerned. Hope those reading it now enjoy it.

Like AHS-Wolfy I think it deserves its classic status and hope others reading it today enjoy it.

I have wanted to read this one for ages. Looks like the Kindle version has been pulled due to content/ formatting issues, though. And my library does not own a copy. I'll have to see if any of the ones close by have one.

I've read it, and it's really good. I love the way John Wyndham writes. It is relatively rational, and because of that, it doesn't make you heart pound, but I still didn't want to put the book down. The story line is excellent, and quite believable. Loved it.
His other books are good too, by the way. My favorites are The day of the triffids, The Midwich cuckoos and The chrysalids.

I have this relatively recent version:

This has been on my shelves unread for a while now. Looking forward to reading and discussing it here. I loved The Midwich cuckoos, so have high hopes for this.

#10 & #11
I also found The Midwich Cuckoos a great book. I even used it as a concept in a presentation I put together about knowledge management for work. The presentation also included Neuromancer and Locutus of Borg.

12: That must have been a great presentation! I have no idea what knowledge management is, but suddenly, I'm interested...

Ah, Locutus. My favorite episodes of TNG!

#13 & #14

I had the slot just after lunch and had to do something to keep people from dozing off after their roast beef carvery lunches. It worked.

I loved it as a teenager and there was a great BBC series in the 80s which was very faithful to it. I recently reread it and found it scarier now than then because now we are capable of this genetic manipulation that creates the triffids.
Some of its attitudes are dated because of when it was written but he was a remarkably prescient writer.

I just need to finish the book I'm reading now and then I'm in. This'll be my first Wyndham, though my brother has been recommending him to me for years.

Just downloaded an unabridged copy from audible and am listening to it now. I really like The Chrysalids, so I have good expectations for this one, especially after reading your response to it, Clam. : )

The classic BBC radio play version is available for download from audible.co.uk (stars a young Peter Sallis!)

lol.
I saw the radio play, but opted for the unabridged reading. I've listened to some Ray Bradbury radio plays. Lots of fun!

Read the first chapter on the train today. An excellently eerie beginning.

I can't locate my copy at the moment. It may have been moved to a box in the attic - pending me finding another place to put a bookshelf. I will go on the hunt for it later on.

I like the intro so far, how the narrator found himself in his position and the background/speculation on the triffids themselves. Hearing his experience with them was v interesting.

Inspired by the group read, I've borrowed the book from the library, and my husband and I have begun it as our current read-aloud. It seems to work well for that purpose.

I've just started chapter 3 and am happily surprised. I wasn't expecting to 'click' so quickly with it for some reason. But I think that's me prejudging books of a certain age.

To some of us, THE best work of post-apocalyptic fiction. Also by some hailed/derided as the epitome of "cozy catastrophe".

A bit of curiosa: A 1969 Norwegian radio drama of the book, "I Trifidenes dager", still remains one of the most popular NRK productions with numerous reprises and continuing good sales. It's a Norwegian production of a BBC drama, so if you like the book it may be worth your time looking up that one.
