Haunted House Stories

Anyone got any good haunted house rec? I'm talking labyrinthine, enclosed spaces with no escape from the thing that's stalking you. The kind of haunted house that Alien and (Kubrick's) The Shining play with so well. The best literary example I've found is House of Leaves (easily one of the best books I've ever read) which traps the reader as well as the characters. Anyone else got any favourites?

I agree. House of leaves was excellent. Unfortunately I lent my copy out and never got it back!
How about The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons, 362 Belisle Street by Susie Moloney, The Haunting by Paul Doherty and The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters,

Two novels I thoroughly enjoyed based around haunted houses were Burnt Offerings by Robert Marasco and Sweetheart, Sweetheart by Bernard Taylor.

One that I liked was The Unseen by Alexandra Sokoloff.

I am reading The Ghost Hunters at present and it is brilliant...intelligent literate compulsive writing just right for this time of year! It concerns Borley House in England and intrepid ghost hunter Harry Price...

It's a short story, but Robert E. Howard's Pigeons from Hell is an excellent example of the "Old, Dark House" trope written in American Gothic style.
