Off the top of my head I'd guess The Fifth Elephant

4Beorn_se_Bacaire
Juin 29, 2013, 1:05 am

Incorrect.

5joannasephine
Juin 29, 2013, 3:50 am

From memory, it's Vimes referring to the events of ... is it Thud? (If it is, Helenliz can have my go. I'm going to be up to my elbows in grout for the next few days.)

6Beorn_se_Bacaire
Juin 29, 2013, 5:17 am

That would be the right answer... Go for it Helenliz.

7Helenliz
Juin 30, 2013, 5:18 am

OK - here goes:
Because the universe was full of ignorance all around and the scientist panned through it like a prospector crouched over a mountain stream, looking for the gold of knowledge among the gravel of unreason, the sand of uncertainty and the little whiskery eight-legged swimming things of superstition

8Helenliz
Juin 30, 2013, 6:23 am

I'm hoping that hasn't broken the rules - it's a descriptive passage, not from a character's speech. But I did use it as a chapter quote for Chapter 1 of my thesis, seemed entirely relevant for a literature review chapter.

9pinkozcat
Juin 30, 2013, 7:19 am

No rules broken; anything goes. But I have no idea where it is from so I'll use my default answer: Unseen Academicals :)

10Helenliz
Juin 30, 2013, 9:58 am

nope.

11pinkozcat
Juil 1, 2013, 1:21 am

Just testing to see if Internet Explorer will let me post so I will try my default #2.

The Last Continent.

Ah yes, though is it I to IV? #XIII?

I really have no idea and I can't remember anything like that at all.

Sorry, I won't even guess at all.

OK. The discworld Companion The first one :-)

15Beorn_se_Bacaire
Juil 1, 2013, 5:44 am

I figure I'll start with the first one...

16Helenliz
Juil 1, 2013, 8:15 am

sorry, that's two incorrect guesses. And it would make no difference which volume you chose, it would still wrong. Just thought I'd save you trying each one in turn >;-)

17pinkozcat
Juil 1, 2013, 10:37 pm

I'll go way out on a limb and guess Equal Rites

18Helenliz

19pinkozcat
Juil 2, 2013, 5:27 am

20Helenliz
Juil 2, 2013, 1:29 pm

no, it is a genuine discworld novel, not a YA or spin off edition.

21joannasephine
Juil 2, 2013, 4:23 pm

Nicely puzzling! I think it’s the reference to a scientist that’s stumping us. Ok, I’ll try Small Gods?

22Helenliz
Juil 2, 2013, 4:29 pm

No again.
Of course, if you'd care to look up my thesis it'd be easy, it's properly referenced & everything. I've got one sitting on my bookshelf, there are 4 others (that I know of).

23Beorn_se_Bacaire
Juil 2, 2013, 8:46 pm

Lol--that's a plug if ever I've heard one...

Here's a hint; It's on page one!

33pinkozcat
Juil 4, 2013, 2:48 am

It is Witches Abroad and if it is correct then justjim can have my turn because he obviously knew the answer before i did.

Not all are 'spinoffs' Some are collections of short stories by Sir T himself :-) and some are collaborations. eg. What is your opinion of say The long Earth or even Dodger a novel I find difficult to classify in Sir T's pantheon?
