Had the feel of a 60s - 70s novel.
May have included the words "red" or "star" in title, or it may have just had a red star on the cover.
A facility run by an alien species fostered individuals of multiple species. Disguised as a utopian learning center, the facility was actually a research facility that housed and monitored all the species it housed.
Things I remember...
A double-helix theme.
A female of one species and a male of another bond over learning how to build a heater using coiled wires, despite being unable to understand one another's language.
The above two individuals become the best pupils, as well as lovers, and are the first to realize they are being monitored by their seemingly benevolent teachers.
A different female from above tries to escape the facility by slipping naked into a food output, resulting in burns on her body.
A love scene between an albino giant and the female that attempted the above escape.
A round device on the wall of each living quarter glowed to light the room. It was also the device by which the inhabitants were monitored.
I believe the alien overseers could also use them to communicate.

I lost this book because of a fire years ago. It didn't burn, but the firemen watered it into a soggy grave. I'd really appreciate anything else to go on.

Still searching... using the information here I haven't been able to come up with much. There's just so much science fiction out there. I have found a lot of new things to read, but I still would like to know what this book was titled.

It reminds me of An Alien Light but that was two groups of humans being studied by aliens.
