Here's my Challenge. At least not too many middle-of-nowhere shots with fuzzy pictures! I had a good run with this one: 32182 points

Wow! That's a high bar. I think max score is 32,500.

Just for the record, this challenge is over Noon (Eastern US time) on Tuesday, June 18th.

Yeah, this was one of my best. But it just happened to be the one I did today. Lest anyone think I presented it for that reason. I swear!

Well, I have a sad tale --- in two ways.

1) I have a MacBook and have been having trouble lately with Safari freezing. Obviously, I can shut it down and re-start it, but here that means I would have to start geoguessr over and I would have the knowledge of where the "pin" was on each round played and that isn't fair. In this case, it froze at #4. I'm going to have to try Firefox which I do have next time.

2) My sad game. Round #1... I had just over half of stellarexplorer's score with his astounding 0.009 km variance. I couldn't relate Google Maps position to geoguessr's tiny map to save me. Round #2... I made a stupid outright mistake, thank you very much and ended with a score of less than half of stellarexplorer's. Round #3... Wandering about in this colorful slum yielded me a pretty good 6431 points with a variance of 0.565 km (vs 0.033 km grrrr!). Round #4... I'm quite sure that I had it pinned down pretty well; but this is where I had my freeze-up. Round #5... I was going to have a perfect score with a 0.000 km variance. But, we won't know that, will we? (small inane joke...)

I did, however, learn the French name for a laundry ("Buanderette") if I ever need one for my family's dirty undies (Note A) in Paris. Qui! And, in the colorful slum, I stumbled on a street vendor selling horchata. Yum. If you've never had one, try it.

Note A: "Dirty undies," according to Google Translate is "sale sous-vêtements" in French. Just in case you ever need the term in Paris. The French are so sophisticated about underwear.

A measly 23252. Round 2 was very blurry for me: I guessed the placename from among several similar possibilities and ended up in the wrong state altogether. And in round 4 I discovered that practically every village in that country has streets with those names that intersect :-(
Round 5 was one of the few I've seen where you can pin-point it without even looking around!

>5 thorold: That's funny. Round 5 was the most difficult for me. I did see the basis for the pin-point you mention, but it still took me a long time to be sure I had things sorted out right.

I suppose we can be more specific after Tuesday, if it is still on our minds.

Managed a 32390

Round 2 was blurred and was also trying in the wrong state for a while. Then went further into town and found an old sign which was clear, and which pinned the town down.

In round Round 4 I had to travel about quite a bit before seeing a sign pointing back to where I came from. But then, like some others in this challenge, the exact spot was clear.

I got 25581. Got tired of the beautiful scenery in #5 and gave up finding an exact location. Much better with the fast internet.

Well, it's past noon, Eastern Time (US), so we're done with this round. Going alphabetically from participants in this round hosted by stellarexplorer, thorold should be up to bat with a new round this coming Thursday, June 20th, ending at noon Tuesday, June 25th.

Could thorold caption the topic "Join In - Geoguessr Challenge" (w/o the date or quotes - that way we can use the topic for a while)? And could we note that the round ends at noon Eastern Time (US) on Tuesday, June 25th in the posting? Thanks.

Pretty much everyone seems to be improving scores. It would be great if everyone who plays reacts to the round with comments. And, that way, we have a way of eventually including everyone in hosting a round (alpha following the last host for the last game).

OK, I'll have a go. Looks as though GeoGuesser is down at the moment, but I expect it'll be back by Thursday. It would be nice to have a round with a few more sites in western Europe, but they don't seem to come up very often.

Thanks! The site seems to be running okay at the moment. I think that they may be swamped. I've seen them mentioned in the press quite a bit lately.

I can't say that I've seen much of western Europe either; Sweden, Croatia, Russia and Andorra are the only places I've "been to" in all of Europe via geoguessr. On the other hand, I've mostly been to the US, Canada, Brazil, Mexico and Australia. Some of the western European countries have complained to Google about privacy issues related to Google Maps. Perhaps there is some hesitancy to use those countries for geoguessr because of that?

I've seen some places in Germany and Spain, but not the UK, France, Italy, etc.

I had one in Austria, a couple in parts previously known as the Western USSR, and I think I had one in the UK. Also one in a country where one of the official languages was French but it wasn't France (don't remember which). I also had a neat one that looked like the Caribbean but turned out to be the Canaries -- does that count as Europe or Africa?

Lots of Russia, US, Canada, Brazil, and Australia. English-speaking southern Africa has also come up a lot, but nothing above that on that continent.

The French I've seen has been in Canada.

I've had two or three in Scandinavia, one each in France and the UK (which was so unexpected that I guessed Ireland...), and one in the Azores. That sentence ought to finish "...and 1003 in Spain", but in fact there was only one there so far.

In terms of area, I suppose Western Europe is a relatively small place compared with Canada, the USA and the former USSR, so maybe that's a fair distribution for the places in which there is Google data, but it doesn't feel right intuitively.

No, it does not.

There is a map available showing the areas covered by Google Street View. I'll try to dig it up.

GeoGuessr is down again at the moment.
But in the meantime have a look at http://xkcd.com/1214/

Hover over the pic for a comment about "becoming a connoisseur of unmarked dirt roads over flat, barren landscapes". I know the feeling.

All too well. Funny though.
