Announcing the June 2013 ReadaThing (June 10-18)

Here's the Official Announcement of the June 2013 ReadaThing!!

We'll be reading from Monday June 10 through Tuesday June 18, depending on your location. Remember, this is a ReadaThing, not a readathon, so no one needs to try to read for seven full days . . . don't kill yourself! An hour or so, one or more times during the week, is fine.

The June 2013 ReadaThing begins at Midnight Monday June 10, UTC/GMT (the midnight between Monday and Tuesday), which is 2 pm Monday June 10 in Hawaii, 5 pm in the Western US, 8 pm in the Eastern US (LT time :)), 2 am Tuesday June 11 in Western Europe, 4 am in Moscow, 10 am in Sydney, Australia, and Noon in New Zealand. (see Time Zone Chart below)

If you want to join in the read, but aren't sure WHEN you can read, or can't plan, there is the "No Timeline" readers signup on the wikipage after the timeline.

What is ReadaThing?

ReadaThing is NOT a read-a-thon!! You do not have to read for the entire week unless you want to! ReadaThing is a time when we gather to read & share what we read. The best analogy is that RaT is like a relay race where a runner hands a baton off to the next runner. Some of the readers sign up for specific reading times & some don't, but there is always someone in the group reading somewhere in the world.

There are several major threads for the ReadaThing: this announcement/information thread, the "what I will/may be reading" thread, and the Log Book & reviews/reports thread.

There is a wikipage for the signups (see above). There will not be a wikipage for the books, please use Touchstones in the "What I will/may be reading" and the "Log Book" threads to provide a record of all the books read during the RaT.

"No Timeline" Readers

After the timeline on the wiki-signup page, there is an area where you can sign up for the "No Timeline" reading.

There is no overall theme for this ReadaThing. If you have a theme you'd like to follow, list it here or in the What Will You Be Reading? thread; if you like someone's theme, say you'll be following it and list which of your books will belong to the theme. This is not required; you can read themeless, read a book and decide afterward it fits one or more themes (multi-theme books are fun!), or choose a book because it fits a theme you'd like to pick up. Part of the fun is stretching themes to fit the books you want to read, too. Anything works - from "rereading old favorites" to "books featuring a female vampire" to "books with yellow covers" - have fun!

Probably tackle one of my 1800s antique books, a modern novel or two and perhaps a non fiction on the recent conflicts in the Middle East.

I'm in. The first week of June I probably won't get much reading done since it is the last week of school and will be pretty mad. I may be visiting my dad which will mean lots on on-plane reading and lots of reading in any case. I can't wait!

I'm in, but my name is not showing up in the No-timeline box. I'v tried it 5 times but nothing happened. I'll try again tomorrow. Of to the trainstation now.

I've signed up for 11 pm eastern U.S. every night, which is 10 pm central for me. This is my favorite reading hour of the day.

I'll have to think about whether I want to devote this hour each day to a particular book.

I've never done one of these before but I think I've signed up correctly.

I'm definitely in. Experience tells me I should stick to the "no timeline" slot. Somehow things go crazy for me in daily life whenever any ReadaThing starts ;-)

I just signed up for the times that will work best for me that week. I hope I have done this correctly. This is my 1st time to participate in this.

I've signed up for no time in particular, I can be found in the No-Timeline-Readers-section :-) Link seems to work okay.

14> I see you 7 times - looks good. Though you don't need to put in a comma if you're the first one in a timeslot - the second person should add the comma. Not a problem, though - either someone else will add themselves or there will just be an extra comma in there.

I put myself with the no-timeline readers and I'm planing to chip away at Mount TBR.

I've been listening to audiobooks on my commute, but I have at least 3-4 newish books by favorite authors that NEED to be READ!! This will be a good time and opportunity to dedicate some serious time to getting through them. (I'd even started two, but didn't get the time to keep reading them... now I need to start over or at least glance over what I'd read to catch up with the plot!)

19> That's always so frustrating. What do I put for a start date? I started it in February, but put it down after two chapters...and I'll have to reread to get started again...so I guess I just started it now and I need to delete the February date. Frust. It happens a lot.

#20: Oh, I gave up on keeping start and end dates years ago. I'd have a marathon reading session and going through shelves of books. I'd be reading so much, I didn't want to stop and write down what I'd read... couldn't leave them out... had to put them back.... considered writing the info in the books, but often didn't have a pencil to write with!! Plus writing anything but notes in a book seems sacrilegious!!

I keep my books on my phone in a database - I put the dates in there, usually, if I'm not on LT about the time I start.

I like having the dates, it's fun. It'll be even more fun when Tim et al get around to doing graphs or a useable timeline or... But it's still nice to see them, and see how long ago, or how recently I read it last.

I just try to put down the end date as it does give me an anchor.

skittles, maybe you could put the dates on a sticky note put on the fly-leaf?

Oh, yeah!

I'm eager to get started on my daily Read-a-Thing. I had to remove my name for Friday night as I remembered I'm going to the Fleetwood Mac concert and certainly won't be home by 10 pm. Otherwise, 10-11 pm every night, except Fri (U.S. central time zone).

I'll put up the Logbook thread tomorrow morning. Shall I bother with What will you be reading?, or is it too close? I won't be doing it tonight - just got back from a week's vacation with a 6-hour drive and I'm exhausted.

Just the Log Book should be fine.... we can always put what we will be reading in this thread, if we want that.

I'm in! I signed up for the no timeline reading. I'll be working all day tomorrow so won't get much reading done then but I'm hoping to at least finish two (short) books - one of which I'm almost halfway through.

I'm in too and have signed up for the no timeline reading, but will fill in specific slots when I have read. This is my first ReadaThing, and I had a question about how stringent I should be with the times. Like I always read during my commute and in the morning that is normally 6:50 - 7:40, should I fill that in as a 7:00 read? I don't mean to be anal, just don't want to drop the baton so to speak.

Looking forward to some extra incentive to read!

Just about ninety minutes til my official reading time begins. I think I'll start Norman Maclean's A River Runs Through It at 10 pm, central, tonight.

31> Yeah - that's always a question for me, too. That's close enough to an hour of reading, and 7:00 is the nearest hour, so yes, that's where I'd put it. It's the half-hours that get the most complicated...

This is an OPTIONAL suggestion... rounding off hours is perfectly fine!!!!!!!!

In a long-ago ReadaThing, there were directions on how to log/sign-up for a :30 to :30 hour.

Here are the old instructions for that:

Each hour is a row in the table. The | (bar) marks define the columns.

If you want to read for the full hour, you'll want to edit the NAME that appears in the second-to-last column.
If you want to read from the 30-30, post the first half hour in that hour & second in the next hour time slot. Example: Reader (12:30-1:00) and Reader (1:00-1:30). Just put the times after your name after the link.

So, you would put this after the librarything web address:

/profile/LT_NAME LT_NAME (X:30-X:00)

X being the hour.

In the next hour you'd do the same except (X:00-X:30)

What's a Log Book, for purposes of the ReadaThing?

The LogBook is a log (or record) of who is reading, what they are reading, where they are reading, why they are reading (whether just because of RaT, because they have to read for any reason, or because they may be addicted to reading). It can also include how they are reading, whether actual book made of paper and cloth, ebook, audiobook, or osmosis.

The log book can also record when they are reading.

It is not a requirement to post in the LogBook. I haven't posted there yet, either, and I don't always put a lot of detail in my posts anyway. It is just a way to share the RaT experience in as close to a face-to-face experience as possible..... especially for those of us who aren't really comfortable with face-to-face experiences.

lindapanzo, share as much as you want, share a little bit, or not at all. Whatever you are comfortable sharing.
