Here goes with the new thread ...
"The big problem I'm facing, Mister Vimes, is that I ought to tell you a few things that I'm not, in any circumstances, allowed to tell you."
"The big problem I'm facing, Mister Vimes, is that I ought to tell you a few things that I'm not, in any circumstances, allowed to tell you."
4pinkozcat
No, not The Fifth Elephant.
6pinkozcat
Night Watch it is. Over to you, pwaites.
7pwaites
"The Chain Letter to the Ephebians. Forget Your Gods. Be Subjugated. Learn to Fear. Do not break the chain -- the last people who did woke up one morning to find fifty thousand armed men on their lawn."
15joannasephine
By ––'s side a small child waved a flag hesitantly and shouted ‘Hurrah’.
16pwaites
Guards! Guards! and the blank is Vimes.
17joannasephine
Too easy. Yep, it was Guards! Guards!
18pwaites
'"Luck is my middle name," said _____, indistinctly. "Mind you, my first name is Bad."'
The character shouldn't be too hard to guess.
The character shouldn't be too hard to guess.
19edrandrew
Sounds like Rincewind. I'll try Interesting Times.
22joannasephine
The robbers who tried to hold up the cop bar, and took Angua hostage, if I'm not mistaken ... but which book? Jingo?
23edrandrew
I think that was in Feet of Clay - but wherever, it wasn't the scene this originated in and the quote didn't come from Jingo.
24AnnieMod
The they are probably the rat-catchers in The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents - I just cannot place it anywhere else...
(Happy New Year everyone)

Happy New Year! (To everyone) :)
27AnnieMod
Oops. Sorry for the delay :)
"It also meant that his idea of desirable female companionship now looked something like a sack of butter thrown through a roll of old inner tubes, and so he was lucky to get away with only minor burns, a headache, and some rather ambivalent feelings about cucumbers, which wore off by teatime."

28Beorn_se_Bacaire
The Librarian, in Sorcery?
36AnnieMod
Nope...
Next two paragraphs (let's see if that will help to place it):
"In the Library above, the grimoires creaked and rustled their pages in astonishment as the invisible runner passed straight through the bookshelves and disappeared, or rather disappeared even more...
Ankh-Morpork gradually awoke from its slumber. Something invisible and yelling at the top of its voice was passing through every part of the city, dragging in its wake a trail of destruction. Wherever it went, things changed."

Aha Eric!

Sorry about the delay guys. Here it is:
____ scrumped plums in the gardens of Empirical Crescent with all the other kids. Half the houses were empty and no one cared much.

43joannasephine
Pretty sure it is Vimes, but isn't it in Thud?
44anatwork.k
No, no, no and yes. It is Thud. All yours, joannasephine.
45joannasephine
Sorry about the delay.
“And, you know, they didn’t laugh? Not even when I did the hand gestures too? I thought that was unfair. Mind you, some of them were quite small gestures.”

47joannasephine
It does indeed. Welcome CryBel, and take it away!
48CryBel
I am going to let someone else take my turn because I am going to be away from the computer for awhile.
Also thanks for the welcome.
Also thanks for the welcome.
49Nahkis
I'll throw in the next one, then:
"That's the sort of thing they go on about in the High Energy Magic building. And they call themselves wizards!"
"That's the sort of thing they go on about in the High Energy Magic building. And they call themselves wizards!"
52AnnieMod
I am almost sure it is one of the witches books...
Wyrd Sisters ?
Wyrd Sisters ?
54Nahkis
Nope to all, so it's time for a clue. Here's what follows:
"You should hear them talk. The buggers wouldn't know a magic sword if it bit them on the knee. That's young wizards today. Think they bloody invented magic."
"Yes? You should see the girls that want to be witches these days {...} Velvet hats and black lipstick and lacy gloves with no fingers to 'em. Cheeky, too."

55joannasephine
Pretty sure it's Granny and Ridcully ... Lords and Ladies?
58joannasephine
Probably too easy, but I love this one:
'We're young, we've got all the time in the world ...' She swung the wrench onto her shoulder. 'Let's go clubbing.'
'We're young, we've got all the time in the world ...' She swung the wrench onto her shoulder. 'Let's go clubbing.'
61anatwork.k
Soul Music? It doesn't fit the other scene where female characters go clubbing...
62joannasephine
Edrandrew has it -- it was indeed Thief of Time.
64guido47
Sounds like a very early DEATH. Since I have just started to re-read ALL the books (In order, and I am only up to #3) I won't make a guess, but perhaps Soul Music ? Sorry, I lied.
ETA. Make sure you leave a space after a bracket in
a touchstone.

65pinkozcat
I need to read them all again - I have forgotten which books have which quotes and am guessing ... but i am sure that I have read that somewhere recently. *sigh*
I'll guess Pyramids
I'll guess Pyramids
68joannasephine
Reaper Man, with Bill Door talking to Miss Flitworth about the Revenoo?
69Artur
Greetings, all. It sounds like a Guards book; Perhaps Men At Arms?
71anatwork.k
I'll go for the very first one, The Colour of Magic.
77edrandrew
Nor them either. I'll expand...
'It all seems very badly organized. I wish to make a complaint. I pay my taxes, after all.'
I AM DEATH, NOT TAXES. I TURN UP ONLY ONCE.

Ok great. This might be too easy but here we go:
Younger _______, who are usually very poor, have very clear ideas about the morality of wealth until they become older _______, who are usually very rich, when they begin to take the view that injustice has its good points.

81anatwork.k
Is no one guessing? :(
84joannasephine
The Colour of Magic, referring to the changing viewpoints of merchants?
85anatwork.k
No, no and no. But to make things easier the blank is 'assassins'.
89anatwork.k
It's Pyramids. Take it away Pinkozcat.
90pinkozcat
Things happened with treacle slowness. He saw it as if he was watching himself from a little way off.
91Beorn_se_Bacaire
Sounds like Vimes. The Fifth Elephant?
92pinkozcat
Over to you Beorn_se_Bacaire. The Fifth Elephant is the book.
93Beorn_se_Bacaire
He'd be waiting out there again tonight. Just like every night. He'd been in during the evening, grinning to himself. He was planning something.
95edrandrew
Sounds like Moving Pictures to me.
96Beorn_se_Bacaire
Yup, Moving Pictures. Over to you edrandrew.
97edrandrew
Its skin is rare and highly valued, especially by the vermine itself; the selfish little bastard will do anything other than let go of it.

((edited to correct a spell check induced error))
98anatwork.k
Argh, no clue. Sounds wizard-ish though. I will try Unseen Academicals. (Sorry Minnie!)
99pinkozcat
I think that it is a Watch book. I'll try Men at Arms.
103guido47
I've just startd to re-read from #1 :-)
One day you're going to die, said the horse. 'It might be today'.
'I know. Why do you think I've come here?'

'I know. Why do you think I've come here?'
104pinkozcat
I am going to have to re-read all the books again. Phrases are familiar but I can't pin them to any book in particular ... as has probably been obvious over the past few months.
If you have started re-reading from #1 then I will guess The Colour of Magic, not because I remember any talking horses but it is as good a guess as any other I could make.

105pwaites
Is this Once More with Footnotes? Anyway, it feels like the short-story "Troll Bridge."
106guido47
And I thought I was being so clever by mentioning I had started from #1 (up to Guards!... now)
It is indeed "troll bridge" but I got it from A blink of the screen
Over to you pwaites.
ETA. Who can afford even a 2nd hand copy of once more with footnotes ? On Amazon a new one is close to $1000 and second hand about $500.

107pwaites
I've read A Blink of the Screen, not Once More with Footnotes. However, I've spent so long thinking that I'd never be able to read "Troll Bridge" because it was only in Once More with Footnotes, that I guess the two have become permanently associated in my mind.
108pwaites
"It more or less sidled back, like a cat who's been away for a few days and knows you've been worrying."
109guido47
I think it is one of "The Storms" before they hit the big time?
So no guess. Hey, I'm only re-reading #8 at the moment :-)
An aside. I do really like the "Watch" arc. I need "permission" to follow this arc rather than do a chronological (published order) read.
If I don't get permission, I will probably turn into a small purple lizzard.
And I know you wouldn't want to see that!
Guido.

110pinkozcat
I always read the Witch ones first followed by the City Watch ones, then the DEATH ones and then the odds and sods..
You have my permission to follow that directive; I'd hate to see you turn into a lizzard, whatever colour.

113edrandrew
I findmyself thinking of Foul Old Ron's semi-autonomous smell. But where - I'll try Soul Music.
114pwaites
It's not Soul Music and it's not Foul Old Ron's smell.
115anatwork.k
I am thinking of the luggage, therefore I will try The Last Continent after it has been away making baby luggages (luggagi?). (I know the actual plural is luggage... ;) )
116pinkozcat
Wasn't that in Interesting Times?
117joannasephine
#115 - luggagi! I like it. Does it only apply to malevolent sapient pearwood trunks, or crappy leather handbags too?
118anatwork.k
116: Drat, you're right. That was in Interesting Times. Something luggage related happened in TLC too... Can't remember what now. I really need to do a re-read as well.
117: Anything you like!!! :)
117: Anything you like!!! :)
119pwaites
It was neither The Last Continent or Interesting Times. Here's a hint - it is very large. Bigger than a breadbox, a elephant, or a house.
120anatwork.k
Dragons? The Colour of Magic?
123heikoprasse
I'm pretty shure it's from Moving Pictures
124pwaites
It's not Moving Pictures. If nobody's gotten it by tomorrow, I'll post which arc it's in.
125Beorn_se_Bacaire
Jingo? I'm thinking that it's referring to the island...
126pinkozcat
I thought that it was referring to a g;lacier but maybe it is that light thingy that Vimes has so I'll say Snuff
128Beorn_se_Bacaire
"Little man battlin' against the forces of brutal authority. People like that. ..."
130Beorn_se_Bacaire
Nope...
133Beorn_se_Bacaire
Neither...
136heikoprasse
The Wee Free Men?
137Beorn_se_Bacaire
None of those...
Is it time to post a hint?
Is it time to post a hint?
139Beorn_se_Bacaire
"Little man battlin' against the forces of brutal authority. People like that. You'll be remembered in song 'n' story, 'specially if yew come up with some good Last Words, like I said."
142Beorn_se_Bacaire
Neither...
143pinkozcat
My default answer - Unseen Academicals
145Beorn_se_Bacaire
Yes! Joannasephine got it!
It is the scene where Rincewind is in jail, and the jailer is talking to him about his hanging--and the songs that were being created to commemorate it.

146joannasephine
Ok, an easy one:
... a bright red-and-white notice which read: "You Don't Have To Be 'Damned' To Work Here, But It Helps!!!"
... a bright red-and-white notice which read: "You Don't Have To Be 'Damned' To Work Here, But It Helps!!!"
147anatwork.k
Going for the obvious: Eric?
148joannasephine
Yes indeedy. Take it away!
149pinkozcat
I know that it is not my turn but this has stalled so here is a very easy one to get things going again.
"He never pays attention, he always knows the answers, and he can never tell you how he knows."
"He never pays attention, he always knows the answers, and he can never tell you how he knows."
150Beorn_se_Bacaire
Thief of Time, perhaps?
152Beorn_se_Bacaire
"You got to watch yourself around ____ ___.I'd like to see one of them Zen buggers come up against her one day."
155Beorn_se_Bacaire
Neither...
158Beorn_se_Bacaire
Correct, Pinkozcat.
The missing bit is Granny Weatherwax's name, after she uses headology on the antagonist.

159pinkozcat
Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead.
I couldn't resist the reference to Schrodinger's cat again.
I couldn't resist the reference to Schrodinger's cat again.
160joannasephine
Argh, on the tip of my frontal lobe ... Lords and Ladies, where Magrat channels her inner Yncie? (sp?!)
161pinkozcat
Queen Ynci, yes, I have just finished reading on from the cat in the box episode. Pratchett never fails to make me laugh.
Lords and Ladies is correct so over to you joanna.
Lords and Ladies is correct so over to you joanna.
162joannasephine
It's probably my favourite Magrat bit of all. So it seems fair another favourite line is offered, even if it's probably too easy:
"LIVE FATS DIE YO NGU."
"LIVE FATS DIE YO NGU."
163pinkozcat
I'd guess Wyrd Sisters but I really don't have a clue.
164Nahkis
Soul Music? No clue here either, tho it does sound familiar. But then again, most of them do...
165joannasephine
Nahkis has it!
166Nahkis
Nice, actually nailed one! Well, here goes, then:
"For the vampires, it was a place to hang up. For the werewolves, it was where you let your hair down."
"For the vampires, it was a place to hang up. For the werewolves, it was where you let your hair down."
169Beorn_se_Bacaire
Grr. Too slow--Men at arms would be my first pick. Ah well...
Hogfather?
Hogfather?
170Nahkis
None of the above, so here's how the quote goes on:
"For the bogeymen, it was a place to come out of the closet. For the ghouls, it did a decent meat pasty and chips."
"For the bogeymen, it was a place to come out of the closet. For the ghouls, it did a decent meat pasty and chips."
173Nahkis
Still no luck, but maybe this helps a little. In the first quote, there's an asterix. I'll post that here, in its context:
"For the vampires *, it was a place to hang up.
* Those, that is, who weren't gathered around the harmonium at the Temperance Mission nervously singing about how much they liked cocoa."
Also, the book's not a Watch one.

175Nahkis
Well done, joannasephine, The Truth it is, indeed! Describing the favourite bar of A-M's undead.
176joannasephine
Ok, this is either going to be easy or waaaaay obscure.
WOULD YOU LIKE A PEANUT? I AM AFRAID IT IS A LITTLE HARD TO GET THE PACKET OPEN.
WOULD YOU LIKE A PEANUT? I AM AFRAID IT IS A LITTLE HARD TO GET THE PACKET OPEN.
178joannasephine
No.
181joannasephine
Nein and nyet.
;-)
;-)
182pinkozcat
I'll go right into the left field and guess Equal Rites
184joannasephine
Still a pair of noes. (Hope everything is ok now Ana?)
185AnnieMod
That sounds like one of the later Rincewinds... The Last Hero?
186joannasephine
Annie has it. And here was me thinking it might go a while ...
187anatwork.k
All is well now, thanks Joanna!
188AnnieMod
"It portrays a small, nervous vampire and, if I may say so, a rather larger-than-life drawing of yourself leaning over your desk, holding a wooden stake in your right hand."
191anatwork.k
Haha, I just noticed the timestamp.
Ok here goes:
'Stories are just stories. Life is complicated enough as it is. We have to plan for the real world. There's no room for the fantastic.'
Ok here goes:
'Stories are just stories. Life is complicated enough as it is. We have to plan for the real world. There's no room for the fantastic.'
193anatwork.k
Yep. All yours joannasephine.
194joannasephine
Blimey! It was a wild stab in the dark, I promise.
Ok:
'Hah!' he shouted, at the dark alleyways. 'Don' like it, eh? Taste of your, your, your own medicine thingy. Well, now you can bootle in your trems!'
Ok:

195Beorn_se_Bacaire
Ok, I'll just go with a semi-random guess to get them started...
It sounds vaguely Rincewindish so, how about Eric?
It sounds vaguely Rincewindish so, how about Eric?
196anatwork.k
I was thinking perhaps Guards! Guards!?
197joannasephine
Ana has it, once again. It was indeed Guards! Guards!. Take it away!
198anatwork.k
Yay, drunk Vimes!
Lets try this one. It is one of my favourites.
'I didn't become a soldier for this. Not to go round killing people.'

200anatwork.k
Nope.
204anatwork.k
No, no and no.
Okay, a little more from slightly above the line on the same page.
'Are you from around these parts, young man?' said _____.
He dropped to his knees. 'Mad Wolf, ma'am,' he said.

Umm. Maybe The Fifth Elephant?
206anatwork.k
Nope. It's not a guards book.
207joannasephine
Ah, he's talking to Granny. (I think.) Wyrd Sisters?
208anatwork.k
You got it! Over to you again Joanna. :)
209joannasephine
Ok:
'You know how to pray, don't you?'
'You know how to pray, don't you?'
210joannasephine
Do you need a hint yet?
212anatwork.k
I will try Thief of Time.
213joannasephine
No and no.
