22anatwork.k
Oct 21, 2012, 4:54 pm

I have a proposal. Let us have a hint of some kind (an extra line, a clue about the book) every day that a new quote is not guessed. It'll reduce the crazy lags we have sometimes with the more cryptic clues.

I know some people don't check LT every day so if you feel a new clue a day is not reasonable shout out.

What do people think?

I think it's a good idea.

"Quiet as the grave," said ____. "Ha, ha."

In this instance mabith has it as I got it from Lords and Ladies, wherever else it may also appear.

57mabith
Nov 2, 2012, 4:05 pm

The sentiment is always expressed a bit differently between the characters/books. I don't think Carrot ever has the "People just think it is," he thinks much too highly of everyone else.

Not so far, so I’ll add the next bit of the exchange. And invite you to think about who is associated with bacon and other foods cooked in a similar manner …

‘Could you stop pointing that sharp bacon at me?’

‘I asked you a question, young woman!’

81pinkozcat
Nov 7, 2012, 6:58 pm

It should be Susan in Hogfather but I have just re-read the book and it should be sacrilegious to mention bacon in that context ... and i don't remember reading it there.. but ...

82anatwork.k

Not that the wages were important, of course. What was important was that she was being her Own Person and holding down a Real job. And being a governess was a real job. The only tricky bit had been the embarrassment when her employer found out that she was a duchess, because in Mrs ___'s book, which was a rather short book with big handwriting, the upper crust wasn't supposed to work. He'd noticed that sex bore some resemblance to cookery: it fascinated people, they sometimes bought books full of complicated recipes and interesting pictures, and sometimes when they were really hungry they created vast banquets in their imagination - but at the end of the day they'd settle quite happily for egg and chips. Thus a few days ago I got Turtle recall and

#154 I don't think that it is playing the game to use really obscure books which very few of us have read, just as it is cheating to look phrases up on the internet.

I must say that I get very tired of guessing quotes which I have no chance at all of getting correct because they are from really obscure books and on the odd occasion when I have looked up the quote I have disqualified myself.

156guido47
Nov 16, 2012, 12:13 am

OooooHhhhh The Compleat Ankh Morpork looks pretty! :)

To add my 2 cents to the discussion, I don't think it is very fair to use completely obscure quotes although I will admit that I once used a quote from the Ankh-Morpork Map and once from The Art of Discworld but Annie got them both times so...

OTOH since we don't actually have any rules written down (as far as I am aware) its probably not against the rules. So use your own judgment I say.

I can buy big and strong anywhere. Right now I need a man who knows how to hold a pencil without breaking it.

That's the thing with Pratchett, there are so many great little quotes that could be a part of any book that this game does mostly come down to guessing.

I try to make the quotes I use reasonably easy. I think that we have been discouraging some people by trying to make things too hard.

I am thinking The Last Hero.

I like that we are doing new hints everyday though; I think it helps.

Probably the link down the bottom "continue this topic in another topic" and up the number to the next one - but I have never done it

I think you have to get to 'post 200' before this option pops up. I think I was there when 'Tim' first? implimented this :-)

OK, OK, just showing off.
