I like substance although making me laugh out loud is sufficient merit for a book. National Public Radio posted a link to books alleged to be both humorous and substantial. I went ahead and put them in my appropriate BN.COM wishlists, but I wondered whether others had experience with any of them. I didn't recognize any of the titles but given my age that doesn't mean there's no mention of them, so links to LibraryThing mentions of them would be pleasant.
I also have some hope that somebody else will be interested in this list.

"Funny books with substance"? How obnoxious. It's as bad as when someone (never a fan of comedy) praises a comedian for being funny and making you think. You're right: Funny is substance.
As for the list, the only one I've heard of is Hope and I'll probably avoid it as Auslander is a skippable contributor to the navel-gazing radio weekly This American Life.

I'm reading Just A Couple of Days by Tony Vigorito and, I think it can be described as a funny book with substance.

quartzite, from the reviews on LibraryThing and BN.COM it looks like a lot of people agree with you. I'll be keeping it in mind.
Thanks,
Robert

If I'm reading a funny book without substance it means I'm pretty desperate to find something to read. I found Bossypants to be really insightful as well as entertaining. I love Tina Fey's views on photoshop and women's self esteem. And where she says she achieved a childhood haircut by folding her face in half and cutting out a heart.
