And it is time for a new thread.
Here is the next:
"There was a big old clock in the farmhouse, and the time on it got set once a week. That is, when her father went to the market in Creel Springs he made a note of the position of the hands on the big clock there, and when he got home he moved the hands on their clock to the same position. It was really just for show, anyway. Everyone took their time from the sun, and the sun couldn’t go wrong."

"This man looked like...well, like a gentleman of independent means and an inquiring mind, perhaps, the kind of man who goes for long walks in the morning and spends the afternoons improving his mind in his own private library or doing small interesting experiments on parsnips and never, ever, worrying about money."
5AnnieMod
Was that about Vlad de Magpyr in Carpe Jugulum?
7AnnieMod
"Other dogs slunk out of the shadows as the two of them were half led, half driven along byways that weren't even alleys any more, just gaps between walls. They opened out eventually into a bare area, nothing more than a large light well for the buildings around it. There was a very large barrel on its side in one corner, with a ragged bit of blanket in it. A variety of dogs were waiting around in front of it, looking expectant; some of them had only one eye, some of them had only one ear, all of them had scars, and all of them had teeth."
8pwaites
Gaspode and Angua in Men at Arms!
10pwaites
This is probably really obvious, but it is one of my favorite sections:
"'This way to the Egress!' Of course, people thought it was a female eagle or something, so Monty had a big man with a dictionary outside to show them they got exactly what they paid for!"

Sounded like a Tiffany Aching book to me too, Ed. How about The Amazing Maurice?
15pwaites
No to The Amazing Maurice and Unseen Academicals.
16edrandrew
A Hat full of Sky then, with the oddities of touring circuses.
19edrandrew
'Why do you just accept everything? Why don't you ever try to change things?'
'They're generally bad enough already' he said.
'They're generally bad enough already' he said.
23justjim
I'm conflicted by the "he said." I'm still going to go with my guess of I Shall Wear Midnight and see how that goes.
27AnnieMod
If that's not Tiffany and I just cannot reconcile the he there, I would think Johnny. That's something that could be his motto after all - at least in Only You Can Save Mankind (and I had read these books way too long ago and in a different language so I might be way off)...
30AnnieMod
Johnny, The Carpet People and the Bromeliad is how I started reading Pratchett - the Discworld needed some time to grow on me ;)
Next:
"It was, of course, something they knew to be true in theory. Merchants always had money. But it seemed wrong to think of it as belonging to them; it belonged to whoever took it off them. Merchants didn't actually own it, they were just looking after it until it was needed."

31joannasephine
Sounds like the philosophy of Cohen the Barbarian, so Interesting Times?
33joannasephine
Ok:
These ladies were certainly into shoes in a big way. They had hundreds.
These ladies were certainly into shoes in a big way. They had hundreds.
35joannasephine
Sigh! And here was me thinking it might garner a few wrong guesses ... your go, edrandrew!
36edrandrew
They were not, strictly speaking, as trousery as normal trousers; senior wizards developed a distinctive 50" waist, 25" leg shape that suggested someone who sat on a wall and required royal assistance to be put together again.
Edited to correct a spell checker induced error.

37pwaites
Moving Pictures when the wizards go in disguise?
38anatwork.k
Or The Last Continent when they are on the beach? I suspect that pwaites is right, however.
Also, hello everyone. I am back from my glorious and too short Cali vacation.
Also, hello everyone. I am back from my glorious and too short Cali vacation.
39justjim
They also get the robes off in their foot the ball reconnaissance in Unseen Academicals, so let's pop that in as well!
43pinkozcat
Equal Rites then?
44AnnieMod
One of the early ones I think... Soul Music?
46AnnieMod
" The flames were flickering brightly again, the same old familiar tortures were being inflicted on ethereal bodies quite incapable of feeling them, and the damned had been given the insight which makes hardship easier to bear - the absolute and certain knowledge that things could be worse."
47joannasephine
The end of Eric?
49joannasephine
Hooray! I have to admit that I've always loved that passage -- a very Pratchett twist on Pascal's wager.
Ok, another favouite bit (pronouns and names removed):
"And what if I won't give it to you?"
-- glared at him.
"Then we shall go away and think about what to do next," -- said.

51joannasephine
Curses! Yes indeed, it was Granny and Mr Goatburger. Your turn.
53AnnieMod
Maurice in The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents? (sounds like him...)
56AnnieMod
Oops. Sorry.
"Gods can take any form, but the one aspect of themselves they cannot change is their eyes, which show their nature. The eyes of Fate are hardly eyes at all - just dark holes into an infinity speckled with what may be stars or, there again, may be other things."

57joannasephine
Hmm, sound like theology Rincewind-style. Interesting Times?
59joannasephine
Hopefully this one will puzzle for at leasta couple of guesses ...
Fun. What is it good for?
Fun. What is it good for?
61edrandrew
Sounds a bit Auditorish to me - I'll try Thief of Time.
62AnnieMod
I have no clue whatsoever so I will just go with one of my favorite books - Guards! Guards!?
63joannasephine
No, no and still no.
:-)
:-)
65joannasephine
And no again. A small hint: think about it as a concept. "Having fun". Irony is involved.
67anatwork.k
I'll throw in my hat with Unseen Academicals even though you hate the book...?
68joannasephine
Still no and no.
More of a hint needed?
More of a hint needed?
69anatwork.k
Ooooh this is Angua in Thud? After the girls night out?
71joannasephine
Hooray! Anatwork has it! Yep, Angua and Thud.
My favourite bit of that was the bar called “Thank Gods It’s Open” …

72anatwork.k
Brilliant.
Okay -- here goes:
After all, what would be the point? What use would it be?
I fully anticipate, since I think this is terribly cryptic, that the next person to see this will guess it correctly but I could always be wrong... :)

73pinkozcat
You are probably wrong because i am guessing Men at Arms
74edrandrew
If it's a trap, I'll fall into it and try Carpe Jugulum, lead on by the CRYPTic comment and a terrible weakness for puns.
75anatwork.k
Aha! No and no. Keep going, good sirs and madams.
77anatwork.k
Still no...
78pwaites
I'll guess Monstrous Regiment.
80anatwork.k
Alas, and still no. Maybe a bit too cryptic. Anyone want a hint?
82anatwork.k
Nope. Hint?
84joannasephine
Ok, logic time. It sounds like someone in a position of power who is surprised at being accused of being underhanded ... Lady Margolotta, perhaps? But it feels like a late book. Snuff?
86anatwork.k
Good morning.
Minnie got it! It is Reaper Man everyone. Your turn, Minnie.
Edit: It is the bit about the fact that they don't dance the Morris dance after summer because, what would be the point? :)

91joannasephine
Snuff?
(to the tune of "Maybe This Time" ...)
(to the tune of "Maybe This Time" ...)
93joannasephine
Minnie, you're a tricky trickster after my own heart.
Ok:
He wasn't just out on a limb here, he was dangerously out of the tree.
Ok:
He wasn't just out on a limb here, he was dangerously out of the tree.
94pinkozcat
That sounds like the trousers of Uncle Vanya. The Fifth Elephant?
95joannasephine
It does a bit, but no.
96pinkozcat
Oh, well! I'll try The Last Continent.
97joannasephine
Still no.
:-)
:-)
98anatwork.k
That sounds late Vimes-ish. I shall go for Snuff not sniff which is what I was typing.
99joannasephine
That would be extremely tricksy of me ... sadly, no. Not Snuff.
101joannasephine
Nup.
As a hint: although it sounds a bit like him, it isn't Vimes.

Ain't that the truth? :) (sorry could not resist ;) )

103edrandrew
OK, are we talking Librarian then? I'll try Small Gods.
104joannasephine
AnnieMod has it. Deary deary me ...
;-)
;-)
105AnnieMod
"The squeaking came round the corner.
It was issuing from what looked like a very rickety edifice, several storeys high. It looked rather like a siege tower, open at the sides. At the base, between the wheels, was a pair of geared treadles which moved the whole thing. "

108joannasephine
Sounds like the mobile ladder in Death's library. So ... Mort?
114anatwork.k
Let's go literal with the siege engine: Interesting Times?
120anatwork.k
Hmm, could it be Eric?
121pinkozcat
I've been away for the weekend and no-one has guessed it
So, I'll try for The last Continent just to be in the competition.
So, I'll try for The last Continent just to be in the competition.
122pwaites
This sounds like the library at the Unseen University... Unseen Academicals?
128pinkozcat
LOL - maybe you should post a list of the books we have already guessed so that we can work through the ones not yet mentioned.
Cheers - minnie
Cheers - minnie
129anatwork.k
random guess, Feet of Clay?
137joannasephine
Crivens, this one is proving very interesting indeed. Don't apologise Annie, it's good. The Light Fantastic?
140ronincats
Hogfather is the 17th book guessed. If it isn't correct, I'll post the books not yet guessed--there are still over 20 of them.
144joannasephine
Phew!
But in a good way. Ok:
Throwing a punch could stop a fight, of course, but in this case it had a quarter of rum, gin and sixteen chopped lemons floating in it.

//146 - especially when they had been thinking that it will be easy... And I did not even cheat with a non-novel.
//Not guessing yours as I am out of town with limited internet.
//Not guessing yours as I am out of town with limited internet.
149joannasephine
Sorry about the delay. Not Witches Abroad
151joannasephine
No, not Maskerade.
:-)
:-)
154joannasephine
Annie has it. It's Nobby and Colon attempting to come to terms with Nobby's ... erm, ennoblement.
155AnnieMod
:) Now this should be easy:
"This was because it is usually very hard to be both loud and unconscious"
"This was because it is usually very hard to be both loud and unconscious"
158pinkozcat
LOL - Unseen Academicals?
168anatwork.k
Men at Arms? I feel like it is the guards. Maybe. It could be the witches too. Or the wizards. :-)
172anatwork.k
Jingo?
184edrandrew
It does sound like it's talking about Feegles - I'll try Lords and Ladies.
188pinkozcat
I'd be furious if it was Wintersmith and i hadn't included it in my never-ending list of guesses
195anatwork.k
Hopefully not Eric again?
196pinkozcat
Now I have a list of already guessed books I shall start working through the rest ... Hogfather
202pwaites
Maybe something outside of Discworld? Good Omens?
206pinkozcat
*grin* Thief of Time
209justjim
Oh! I thought Annie meant that you had it with ToT? Perhaps not. I now see that it could be read either way.
210pinkozcat
I don't think that I got it with ToT. It is probably something obscure like Nanny Ogg's Cookbook.
212anatwork.k
Has anybody guessed Equal Rites yet?
213AnnieMod
Sorry - should have been more clear - noone had it as of message 207 and noone has it now - it is not Men at Arms, Strata or Equal Rites. Or Nanny Ogg's Cookbook.
And it is a novel...
And it is a novel...
216anatwork.k
How about Night Watch?
218pwaites
I don't have the ability to make touchstones at the moment, but I'll edit this later.
The Long Earth?
The Long Earth?
220guido47
Do we have a new record yet?
My guess is something along the lines of "the science of diskworld".
My guess is something along the lines of "the science of diskworld".
221pinkozcat
32 guesses. I think that I will disqualify myself and look it up but just one more try first.
Feet of Clay
Feet of Clay
222pinkozcat
Now I feel like a complete fraud so I WILL disqualify myself and give my turn to guido47.
224pinkozcat
No - I guessed right and then looked it up and found that I'd hit the bullseye.
It makes me feel uncomfortable so I am opting out.
It makes me feel uncomfortable so I am opting out.
225anatwork.k
WHY did it take us 32 (or 33 or 34) tries to get to FoC?!!!
Minnie, I think its okay if you look up the quote after you've guessed the book. :-)
Minnie, I think its okay if you look up the quote after you've guessed the book. :-)
226pinkozcat
I felt embarrassed that I guessed right. I'll give it to guido. Anyway we haven't heard from the arbiter yet.
227guido47
Umm, Guido here,
I just lurk here - and I have read ALL the novels and more. Why I read the Colour of Magic when it was first released and though (at the time) Ho Hum, just another fantasy. Then 2 years later, I stumbled on the the 2nd book. The light...
Still No spark. Then...Then I read Equal rites.
Well, A fan ever since. I just peruse your game, and am amazed by your sheer knowledge. Even JustJim.
I guess I could pull a quote, at random, from a non mainstream novel but feel this would be cheating.
So, hoping this will be passed from me very quickly:
"T minus twelve hours".
His audience, sitting on the deck, watched him with alert and polite incomprehension.

//(For the ones that did not realize it, it was the same book as the previous quote -- I DID say at one point that I will do this sooner or later. Now need to think of a different trick for next time... )
235guido47
No, sorry Pinko, I do really want this responsability to be taken from my shoulders. And will try to never "...sort of get the Gold medal 'cos everyone else in front of me fell over".
ETA, also alsa no joanna #234.
ETA, also alsa no joanna #234.
236joannasephine
Doing a Bradbury, you mean Guido?
237guido47
I thought only an Aussie would catch that reference, but I notice you are from "just across the pond". Look we need some more 3rd. rate cricketers so when are you guys going
to join our "uber" state. I guess we can fit another star on out flag!
to join our "uber" state. I guess we can fit another star on out flag!
238joannasephine
Actually Guido, I am an Aussie. (I think we've had this discussion before on another thread ...)
But back to the game. Not from The Last Continent then?
But back to the game. Not from The Last Continent then?
240guido47
Yes, Yes Yes #239, AnnieMod.
Please take this mantle from me and pass it on in the approved fashion.
PS. #238, I really don't remember that discussion, and I pride myself on my memory (when Scotch isn't involved :-)

So when that discussion happened, Scotch was involved? (*ducking for cover*)
OK - next:
"And the general effect was also spoiled by the fact that he was smoking a cigarette, had a mug of tea in his hand and a face that looked a bit like something that lives under damp logs."

I know you are sneaky, so I'll try The last hero
248justjim
//Totally off topic. While admitting my geographical ineligibility for this competition that Jasper Fforde is running, I did nevertheless take and send in this photo, which I thought you guys might appreciate.//
249anatwork.k
I think Annie's quote might be referring to 71 hour Ahmed in Jingo. (Note all the qualifiers. I now fully expect to be wrong every time I guess. :-))
Jim, I have become accustomed enough to living in America that I actually find Hawaiian pizza delicious! Lol.
Jim, I have become accustomed enough to living in America that I actually find Hawaiian pizza delicious! Lol.
251anatwork.k
Tiffany Aching perhaps? The Wee Free Men?
254anatwork.k
Wintersmith? I _really_ think this is the witches...Tiffany in particular.
256anatwork.k
A Hat Full of Sky to complete the set?
257edrandrew
The rat catchers in The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents might fit the description.
259anatwork.k
Okay cool. Let us try this one. It should be fairly simple and I like the whole passage.
"Then what's he ever done to me, that I should hurt him so?"
"Then what's he ever done to me, that I should hurt him so?"
260joannasephine
Granny Weatherwax, when having to choose whether to save the mother or the unborn child in ... Carpe Jugulum, I think?
261edrandrew
I thought that incident was in Witches Abroad.
262pinkozcat
And I think that it was a contest between a baby and a cow but I have no idea which book it is in.
263anatwork.k
You are all correct and Joannasephine got the book right. :)
264joannasephine
Lordy me. At least I got the book right.
