As Game Thread 4 is now a lot longer than Game Thread 3, I decided to start a new thread.

Back in post 297 of Game Thread 4, rabbitprincess asked me to read and review The Little Stranger.

My review is here.

rabbitprincess, please read The Abominable Man, as I have read a few of the Martin Beck books, but I don't remember if I have read this one before.

Whoever chooses for me, please pick from my read soon tag.

In game 4, message 291, ninjafinity asked me to review Zen = Zendō by Alan Watts. I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this old friend for this review. http://www.librarything.com/work/16710/reviews/80016976

isabelx, please review Larry Nivin's Integral Trees. I liked this book, but it has been ages. I will be interested in seeing what you think of it.

I have started a collection called TBReviewed in case my whole collection is intimidating to choose a book from, but I will review from any book you find. I'll figure out how to link to reviews and collections eventually, I guess.

Bidwell-Glaze, would you review Interworld by Isidore Haiblum? Just based on the cover, it looks like a cross between sci-fi and horror, which have become some of my favorite novels; it also doesn't have any reviews yet :)

Meanwhile, long long ago, someone asked me to read The Glass Dragon by Irene Radford--I hesitate to search for when or who, it was so long ago. FINALLY, I finished it. And, I should say, it wasn't because I put the book off. Now, though, I'm finally back here to report and anxious for another assignment! The review, meanwhile, is here: http://www.librarything.com/work/136240/reviews

For the person choosing for me, just choose anything that's not already reviewed! Some of my unreviewed books are in my "To Read" collection, but many books which I added before the collections feature never got noted as such, so either way! And, kindly, I'll ask you to avoid those thousand page anthologies for obvious reasons...

Awhile back Samantha_kathy asked me to review Legend in Green Velvet. Had to wait for interlibrary loan, but here is my review. Thanks for assigning it!!

whitewavedarling, how about Flight from Slaughter?

In Game Thread 4, NeilsenGW asked me to read and review Strip City and it was fascinating! I was actually on a road trip at the time and tried to get to some strip clubs, but the closest I came was Coyote Ugly in Memphis. Anyway, thanks for the great suggestion! My review is here.

tjsjohanna, how about Persuasion by Jane Austen. I haven't read it either, and I'd be interested to know what you think.

For me, please choose from my tbrv pile. Thank you!

In the first message on this thread, isabelx asked me to review The Abominable Man, since she had read a few Martin Becks and couldn't remember if she'd read this one. Oddly enough, I myself had read this one a few years ago but remembered nothing of it, so I was glad of the opportunity to refresh my memory. When I was finished I had only one question: how could I have forgotten it? Review is here: http://www.librarything.com/review/81147954

EmScape, does Galápagos, by Kurt Vonnegut, suit? I read it fairly recently and enjoyed it, and would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Whoever chooses my next read can pick from the to-read collection: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/rabbitprincess/toread
Thank you kindly!

In message 235, Bidwell-Glaze asked me to review The Integral Trees . I have now read it and my review is here

rabbitprincess please review Doctor Who and the Terror of the Autons because that is the first Doctor Who story that I actually remember watching as a child. I have a few faint memories of the third Doctor's previous assistant Liz, and one mental picture of the second Doctor and Jamie walking through a railway tunnel, but the third Doctor and Jo Grant are the first ones I remember properly.

Whoever chooses for me, please pick from my read soon tag.

Hi, isabelx! Thanks for picking Doctor Who and the Terror of the Autons for me! It was great fun to read, very easy to picture too -- I think I must have seen a clip of it on Youtube or somewhere. And it was quick (as evidenced by how fast I returned to the thread :P).
Review is here: http://www.librarything.com/review/70473705

Today it's nice and sunny where I am (expected high: 27 degrees Celsius), so I thought a "light" read might suit: Right Ho, Jeeves.

In Game Thread 4, message 288, rabbitprincess asked me to review Paradise postponed. Book was read in early April but review was unavoidably delayed. It is here.

Now I get to return the favor. rabbitprincess, will you read How to save the world in your spare time - the title is intriguing and I'd like to know what you think of it.

Way back in post 280 of the last thread, isabelx asked me to read and review A Smudge of Gray. My review is here: http://www.librarything.com/review/83733622. It took a long time for me to post because I'd forgotten to come back here and do it... or rather I'd dreamed I'd done it or something because I was convinced I'd posted it here. Woops! Sorry. ;) This was an interesting book with an interesting concept. I enjoyed reading it, or rather having it read itself to me. :)

For tjsjohanna, I will say, "How about Frankenstein?" It's sort of an oddball pick, but today I've encountered four references to the book (or the movie) and it's only lunchtime. I will take this as a sign. ;)

Whoever picks for me, please choose from my Go Review That Book set. Thanks!

mirrani, how about Exiled: Memoirs of a Camel - sounds like a fun book and one that my grandchildren might like - waiting to see your review.

isabelx, I just read a book nominally about manifest destiny, so I thought it coincidental that one of the first books I saw on your list was Manifest Destiny by Barry Longyear. Would you review it, please?

EmScape, I get to choose for you again. I always thought George Burns was a character. (Do I have to admit I watched the TV show that he did with Gracie?) Saw his book How to Live to Be 100. Could you read and review?

In message 15, isabelx asked me to read and review The Mystery of Love by the esteemed Sister Wendy Beckett. It was a nice short (but still interesting) romp through religious art history. My local review is here, but the full blog post is at Lifelong Dewey. Thank you for the fun choice!

Sorry, fdholt, you're stuck with my pick again, but this time I'd like to see a review of John Noble Wilford's We Reach the Moon. It seems like an interesting book on Apollo 11 from a technological rather than a sociological point of view.

fdholt, thanks for asking me to read and review How to Live to be 100, and I really wish that I had seen the show he did with Gracie. From reading this, I'm sure it was pretty entertaining. Here's my review.

NielsenGW, you have a very scholarly collection! I did; however, manage to find a titillating(!) title. How about Cleavage: Essays on Stars, Sex and Aesthetics?

When picking for me, please choose from unread, tbr or tbrv. Thanks!

In Message 9, fdholt asked me to review How to Save the World in Your Spare Time, by Elizabeth May. Many thanks for the nudge to read it -- it's been on the shelf for five years. Review is here. http://www.librarything.com/review/70474179

EmScape, would The Fry Chronicles, from your tbr collection, do? I'll probably borrow it from the library eventually but would like to hear an opinion on it.

Waaay back in message 272 of the last thread, NielsenGW asked me to read and review Mr. Wilson's Cabinet of Wonder, an amazing and slender book. It took me so long to report back because I lost the book soon after starting it and it was only when I took my son back for another haircut, that I found it again, underneath the Peoples and Modern Brides in the waiting area.

Anyway, my review is here: http://www.librarything.com/work/45492

tjsjohanna, would you consider reading The Moon by Night by Madeleine L'Engle? I so loved that book as a teenager. I'd like to see what you think of it. It's the second in a series that begins with Meet the Austins.

In #18, NielsenGW asked me to read and review We reach the moon - review here. There are so few events that define an era. For my mother, it was Pearl Harbor; for me, the Kennedy assassination; for many of my early college students, the Shuttle disaster. For many others, it was the walk on the moon, with the wonder of it all. Thanks for the look back in time!

rabbitprincess, E=mc2 A Biography of the World's Most Famous Equation looks like an interesting book. Looking forward to the review.

To make it easier to pick a book for me, I have a “to read” collection: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/fdholt/toread

fdholt asked me to read Exiled back in June. I love to read this book and yes, I highly recommend it for any readers, young and old alike. The writing is just brilliant, sharp but easy to follow.. it's a quick read but very touching. My review is here.

And now I get to pick for you... Hm... How about The Wright brothers and their development of the airplane? Being from NC, that kind of sticks at my heart right now as something I'd like to hear about.

fdholt please review American lit relit : a short history of American literature for long-suffering students, for teachers who manage to keep one chapter ahead of the class, and for all those who, no longer being in school, can happily sink back into illiteracy because the extremely long title caught my eye : )

I read both books of The Brave and the Bold. The review for the first one is here: http://www.librarything.com/review/76471835 and the review for the second one is here: http://www.librarything.com/review/76471851. I enjoyed reading about all of the series put together into one set of short stories. I felt like the solutions were sometimes a little easy. The covers are misleading. Some of the captains are in the book quite a lot, others hardly make an appearance. Janeway gets a few lines while Tuvok spends his time with the maquis. That sort of thing.

isabelx, I pick The Good Fairies of New York for you because I'm two days away from going to the city myself. It seemed like a matter of fate. :)

A while back EmScape asked me to review Sons of the Wind, which I read quickly, but have only just now had the time to review. It's a simple review because this is the kind of book that is more an example of history than actual novel or whatever. This is written to record the storytelling tradition of a people, meant to record the traditions that are dying.

So, my review is here: http://www.librarything.com/work/2120608/reviews/41390059.

Rabbitprincess, I am looking at your books now and I think that we both share the book The Moonstone and I'd like to know what you think of that one, please.

EmScape, how about The Cat Who Walks Through Walls, by Robert Heinlein? That title struck me as interesting as I just read an installment in the "Cat Who" series by Lilian Jackson Braun. I know they're probably nowhere near the same thing but the similarity was too good to pass up ;)

Ack! It looks like I erroneously left The Cat Who Walks Through Walls in my tbrv collection even though I've already reviewed it. My review is here. It is decidedly different from the Lillian Jackson Braun books, although I own it because my mother knew I was reading those books and picked it up thinking it was part of the series. Consequently, this was my first, but certainly not last, Robert Heinlein book.

So, I guess I'll pick for rabbitprincess and the next person can pick something different for me. How about Alfred Hitchcock Presents Stories Not for the Nervous? I have a couple of the others in that series and am wondering whether to acquire more.

Rabbitprincess, it looks like I'm picking for you again! How about Three Bits of Fry and Laurie? You had earlier in this thread suggested I read Mr. Fry's memoir, and as I enjoyed it very much, I thought I'd return the favor.

Newbie on the list, so first time poster etc

EmScape, I challenge you to read Through the Ice by Piers Anthony. Anthony is what got me reading Sci Fi all those years ago, but I havent read him for decades...

Meanwhile, the list of my outstanding books to read is my TBR list (http://www.librarything.com/catalog/nordie&tag=TBR&collection=-1)

Yay! It's nice to see a few new faces around here!

Well, I've finished Isaac Newton: The Last Sorcerer as directed by isabelx. Not many people would try to assert with a straight face that alchemy lead to the greatest discoveries in classical physics, but this one sure tried.

Local review: LibraryThing

Blog post: Lifelong Dewey

For Kathadrion, I choose Det svenska samhället 1720-2006 : böndernas och arbetarnas tid. I don't have a book on Scandinavian history and I'm eager to hear your opinion of this one.

I second NielsenGW's welcome to the newcomers. I love to have new libraries to look through!

I have completed reading Through the Ice by Robert Kornwise and Piers Anthony. Thank you, Nordie, for suggesting it. I had just finished a long series by Anthony and was kind of tired of him, but since this is a collaboration, it ended up being better than I expected. My review is here.

NielsenGW, your library is much more literary and academic than mine, but I tried to find you something fun. How about Verbatim: From the bawdy to the sublime, the best writing on language for word lovers, grammar mavens, and armchair linguists?

I'll ask the next person to pick from my unread tag.

Well Kathadrion asked me to read Case Histories: a Novel by Kate Atkinson and my review is here: Librarything Review

Emscape - i've had a brief look through your list and have seen a couple of books that I've read and would be interested on your take on them, but I've chosen The Lace Reader by Bruonia Barry. I listened to this as an audiobook about a year ago, so be interested in your take on it.

I really enjoyed the beginning of this book and I learned a lot about other animals as well as humans. That was much less interesting, but the first 3/4 of the book made up for it very well. :)

Many, many moons ago I was asked to review the BBC Radio audio dramatization of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, by Douglas Adams. That review is finally here: https://www.librarything.com/review/93813965

TequilaReader, I'd appreciate a broadening of my knowledge of Judy Blume with a review Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret.

Whoever picks for me has free rein of my to-read collection: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/rabbitprincess/toread

Thanks!

>231 TequilaReader: asked me to review Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? I have now re-read it and my review is here.

rabbitprincess, please review The Sagas of Icelanders (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) by Robert Kellogg, as I have just started reading Njal's Saga. You don't have to review the whole collection, just choose a saga that looks interesting to read and review. I recommend either Egil's Saga (lots of poetry & fighting - a fun read) or Laxdaela Saga (hell hath no fury like a woman scorned).

Whoever chooses for me, please pick a book from my to read collection that hasn't been reviewed yet.

Please review Nostradamus Ate My Hamster

I believe over a year ago I was asked to review The Red Tent and I have finally done so. I believe I was in the minority of rather disliking it.

jimroberts, please review Yoga for Chickens. It looks intriguing and has no reviews.

Too long ago, I was asked to review Flight from Natchez--it shouldn't have taken me so long, but between my at first having it packed into a box for moving, and then putting it off because of its small print... well, it took quite a while! But, I finally got to it this month, and actually really enjoyed the escape of it, so there's a positive review written, and I'm glad I got pushed along to read it!

Meanwhile, bell7, would you review Scholar's Plot from your to-read books? It's got no reviews at the moment, and one of my goals for this coming year is to read more YA fantasy, so I'd love to hear your thoughts :)

Whoever chooses for me, as others have said, just choose from my To Read collection at http://www.librarything.com/catalog/whitewavedarling/toread All I ask is that you avoid giant anthologies and the drama/language workbooks (since I tend to wander in and out of both). My goal will be to get to whatever's chosen much faster than I did this past time!

Ok, I'll bite! Thanks whitewavedarling for the link on your page to this group.

From your link above, I choose 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill - the first book I came across that's also on my TBR.

For me, my unread books are in my To Read collection. I'd prefer that you don't pick reference books, but otherwise everything else is pretty much fair game. Thanks!

How about The Reluctant Sorcerer?

As I am in the middle of unpacking books, please select for me from http://www.librarything.com/catalog/AnnieMod/kindle&tag=to%2Bread (which I can get my hands to easily enough)

Hi Annie, I've read and reviewed The Reluctant Sorcerer.

From the link you posted, I've chosen Red Star Tales: A Century of Russian and Soviet Science Fiction; I'll be interested to see what you think.

Lisa, I finished 20th Century Ghosts, and it was wonderful!

Edited--I must have gotten away from Lisa's 'To Read' collection somehow, so I'm coming back to offer an edit for something that's already on her shelves. Lisa, how about The Black Book by Orhan Pamuk--that's one I've meant to read for ages, so I'd love to hear what you think of it!

For the next person who'll choose for me: my unread books are listed in my To Read collection. Ideally, please avoid reference book and giant anthologies...

In message 233 I was asked to review The Sagas of Icelanders. I got partway through Egil's Saga and must confess defeat -- I don't have the time or the headspace to give this book the attention it deserves. Nevertheless, I have provided a partial review, which I hope is useful: https://www.librarything.com/review/70473991

whitewavedarling, how about reviewing The Graveyard Book? I am just about to read it myself on audio and would love to hear what you think of it as well :)

Anyway, I'm glad to be back to a somewhat calm state of life that's much more conducive to reading and am excited to jump back into this thread. Here is my review.

Gold Ship by Mark Philipson (You can find it on Amazon, but it does not seem to be on LibraryThing. Or maybe I just missed it. But I'd review it in other places.)
Inventors and Imposters by Daniel Diehl
Mask of Sanity by Joseph Appel
Surviving 'Uncle Hitler' by Dorothea Wollin Null
Gun Kiss by Khaled Talib (not yet released, but coming soon)
The Locke Cipher by Gabriel Kron
Sitka by Louis L'Amour

Back in message >242 rabbitprincess:, I was asked to read The Graveyard Book. I've got mixed feelings, compared to other books by Gaiman which I've absolutely adored, but I'm still glad to have finally read it. Full Review posted if you're interested!!! Thanks, rabbitprincess!

>255 EmScape:, How about Shade of the Tree by Piers Anthony? He was one of my favorites when I was younger, though I haven't read him in ages and have lately been thinking I want to revisit his works. I never got around to this one, so I'd love to hear your thoughts!

For whoever picks for me: Please pick something from my 'To Read' Collection at http://www.librarything.com/catalog/whitewavedarling/toread
All I ask is that you try to avoid things like reference books and Norton collections with thousands upon thousands of pages! Come to think of it, most of my anthologies are in boxes, so if you avoid those and reference works in general, that might be best. There's still plenty to choose from, though :)

whitewavedarling, how about Isaac’s Storm, by Erik Larson? It’s a Larson I haven’t heard of, and it looks really interesting.

In message 256, whitewavedarling suggested I read and review Piers Anthony's Shade of the Tree, which I have done. I'm generally pretty "meh" about Anthony as I feel he tells good stories, but has issues with female characters. My reading of this novel supported that opinion, but I am glad to have read it.

rabbitprincess, you have quite a lot of Doctor Who books! I just finished watching the reboot series last year, have started watching the old series from the beginning (what there is of it available) and have been wondering how the books are, since I own a lot of them in electronic format. Could you please read The First Doctor Adventures - Volume 1 (Doctor Who - The First Doctor Adventures) (I tried to pick something that was at the beginning of a series, but if you'd like to do a different one, feel free).

If the next person could please choose from my GRBT tag, I'd very much appreciate it. :)

In >258 EmScape: I was asked to review The First Doctor Adventures, Volume 1, one of many Doctor Who items in my collection. I had somewhat complicated feelings about it. I loved David Bradley's performance as the First Doctor (he is well worth listening to), and the audios capture the spirit of the original TV series, but the second story was set in NYC and I found the American accents dubious. Your mileage may vary. Full thoughts here: http://www.librarything.com/review/150957699

isabelx, I believe you have not yet started the Fire and Ice series by Michael Ridpath. Would you like to try Where the Shadows Lie? This is one of several books we share :)

It's certainly made me a fan of Larson. The book isn't for the faint of heart, but it's worth reading. Full review written, of course!
