GROUP READ - Gentlemen of the Road by Michael Chabon

I thought I would go ahead and set up the thread for this Group Read. I, personally won't be able to start reading until later in the month as I am going away. But for anyone who's ready to start or just wants to check in, here we are!

I'm in. I'll be listening to the audio version, which I've already downloaded from the public library. I was pleased to find that it's narrated by one of my favorite actors, Andre Braugher.

I've already got the book checked out of the library, but probably won't get it started for another week or two.

I'm in. I own a copy but am a little jealous of Carrie's audio as Andre Braugher is probably a GREAT narrator!

I placed a hold at my library for the book but I am now wondering if I should place a hold on the audiobook..... decisions, decisions! Either way I will be joining this group read in a week or two.

I've already got it out from the library, but since everyone else is holding off for a bit, I guess I will, too! I'm really looking forward to this. Thanks, Judy for mentioning this on your thread, or I probably would have missed it completely.

I picked up this book at the library today and hope to start it tomorrow. I was surprised that it wasn't a huge book, it's somewhere around 300 pages, but, I don't know why but I was expecting a 600 plus volume.

I finished the audio version today - I liked the book, but feel like I might have missed out on some things by not reading it in print. I also have a print copy that I'll browse to see if it adds anything. I think this story would be a great movie.

I finished Gentlemen of the Road as well. Firstly, I agree with Sandy above, this would make an excellent movie. I liked the adventure, the humor and the swashbuckling, but I never fully felt absorbed in the story. I was always aware of the extra flourishes and style that the author added. Overall, though a fun read.

I finished Gentlemen of the Road yesterday and I have to say I really enjoyed this one! Such fun and filled with rich language. No character favorites although if I have to lean towards one it would be the melancholic Zelikman -such a tortured soul!

I guess I should add that I listened to an audiobook and I found the reader/narrator's voice was a perfect match for the story. My review can be found here.

I loved the audio experience for the book, too. After reading several comments about the illustrations in the print copy I think a "re-read" of the print version might be in order at some point.

The illustrations are good - I had both the audio and the hardcover and skimmed the hardcover after listening to the audiobook. My only surprise at looking at the pictures in the hardcover is the gaunt look of Zedlikman gives the impression of a much older individual than my mind had envisioned while listening to the audiobook.

Something at the beginning of the book gave me the impression that Zelikman was an older man. I remember being surprised toward the end of the book and thinking that Zelikman must have been younger than I had thought.

playing catch up whilst on holiday, (also read March's book The Windup Girl) I found this very easy to read, Sinbad meets three men in a boat!

I have a copy of that around here so I'll be joining in sometime this month. Once I finish Middlemarch, that is.
