I have been testing out the new List feature. It is sort of interesting.

I have seen some comments about adding Lists to Groups. Which to me would be very easy. I would just insert the html in to the groups description.

So would people be interested in a List of "My Single Most Unique Book"? The "guideline" would be to pick ONE book among all your ULTBs to add to the list. I would then add a link to list in the comments for this group.

What do you think?

Well, since you asked. Yes, I would be interested in such a list.

There is no such thing as a "most unique" anything.

Oh. I would submit this book: Monarch of mahogany visits Schmieg-Hungate & Kotzian : being the history, travels and eventual life of perhaps the oldest living and grandest king of the wood of woods.

I wrote the only, albeit brief, review of this book:

This is the story of a log. In a time, long long ago, when raping the world of its resources was a non-issue, the good folks of Schmieg-Hungate and Kotzian (New York City) located an ancient and beautiful living specimen of mahogany in the province of Oriente in the country of Cuba. And they killed it. Cut it open. And used it as veneer on some of the finest furniture of the early 20th century.

This is the story of that log.

#3,

Thank you. I was going to say the same thing.

I'm also slightly amused by misuses of "quantum leap" (a smallest unit not the largest as popularly portrayed), "light year" as a unit of time, and "first edition" when "first printing" is more appropriate.

Now we could say that each person should include "the most interesting" (to the collector) item with a ULTB tag.

Of course most ULTBs are published so there's likely more than one around. Hence, it is possibly a matter of time before another is cataloged. This is why it is a good idea to look through one's ULTB list to ensure that no one else has one. I believe we agreed that if a single account has the only 2 copies of a scarce book that can still claim the ULTB tag.

James

3> Does it bring you joy to point out other mistakes? Especial, in a group to which you said, you would rather light your hair on fire than join. (Sorry, that just brings me a unique joy to think of you with your hair on fire running into the night.) Seriously, do you spend your day monitoring posts to groups you have stated you don't like ( I guess the whole hair thing is just a metaphor for your dislike) , waiting to pounce on grammar errors.

Sigh... However, you are correct. I even checked http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/modifying-absolutes.aspx, Grammer Girl. I will correct the list to be "My Favorite Unique Book"

In my defense, I was discussing selecting one item from a list of item that are categorized as "unique". So either, there cannot be a list of unique items, or uniqueness can be a graduation.

P.S. Grammar is obvious not one of my skills. But, if it brings you joy, please point out every misuse of a comma, period or apostrophe I have made. I won't stand in the way of anyone's pursuit of joy.

#8 You are correct! We don't need Legal Laws! Added as rule IX)! However, now it is a rule are there still valid rules? Or does it apply only to Laws. Or, since it is only a need and not a absolute is it valid.

Ah as Godel said "Embrace the Suck!" (I am paraphrasing, but you get the point, I hope!)

My mostest uniquest book would probably be En América no hablamos castellano (In América, we do not speak Castilian), which I found in one of the magnificent used bookstores on Donceles street in Mexico City. When I brought it home and tried to catalog it in LT, not only could I not find it here, I couldn't find it on WorldCat (!), so I Googled it, and I couldn't find any mentions of it there either!! (Since that time, it does now appear once as a bibliographic reference in another book in Google Books.)

So... did someone start the list? I can't find it.

Mine is probably Documents Relating to Revolutionary History of New Jersey. Vol III Newspaper Extracts 1779 for being a very small print run.

I also collect old how-to and health books that nobody else will ever use again.

#3: Whatever. Nothing's unique; we're all products of the same handful subatomic particles. Everything's unique; no object has the exact same pattern of combination of subatomic particles. Each mass-produced DVD and book was unique before it was even shipped to the consumer. Without qualification, it's a meaningless word.

#10 - we have a few non-members who carefully watch the group ready to swoop in like a hawk and combine together non-unique titles that we have been carefully hoarding.

The List system now has a feature to create a list base on a tag.

Check http://www.librarything.com/list/246/all/Books-Tagged-ULTB

Interesting results.

Yeah, especially the one that has 109 members :-/

I see someone else has added a copy of The Queen's Servants, so I've taken my ULTB tag off of it, and now it says 3 members in stead of 2. ??

Yeah I have always thought the nature of the ultb tag makes it a great unit test for a lot of code in this system.

A maybe this will help user get up to date...

I'm confused. I seem to be the only owner of The AALS Deanship Manual but it says there's someone else -- except there isn't. If it were held by a private member, wouldn't it say that?

#14: Ok, Collectorator, finally got around to getting out the scanner and scanned the cover of my mostest uniquest book. (I was worried that this might give me a desire to start scanning *all* my book covers, but fortunately that didn't happen. Yet.)

My single most unique book would definitely have to be one of the many handbound books I have created. But they have no ISBNs and don't qualify for this site as far as I know.

But would it be legal to declare them as being somehow "legitimate" books if the copyright(s) to the their contents belongs to another person/people? I've made several books whose content IS completely my own, but I've also made printed versions of webcomics I like and handbound those or made handbound books of ink drawings I found online and printed out.

(With regards to the book of ink figures, it was really cool, b/c I was able to get in contact with the artist whose images I had downloaded for the book via the gallery that represents him and told him about the project: it was the first hardcover bound book was had to make in this bookbinding class I was taking at Brown that actually had content (not a blankbook, which was all we'd made up to that point, and which is much easier b/c you don't need to figure out what content goes where on the folded pages of a signature of n-pages so that everything comes out right-side-up and in order). Also, we were required to make 4 identical copies of the book. I assured him that I would never try to profit off the books, etc., but since his drawings were the inspiration for the book I would really like to give one of the copies to him, and asked for his address so that I could mail him a copy. He gave it to me, I mailed the book, and he emailed me back to tell me how much he liked it, how it he really appreciated the fact that he now had physical copies (though not full size) of so many images that he had sold and which he missed having in physical form. He ended the email with a little blurb about "And if you're ever in Chicago, maybe we could get together for coffee or something" (but phrased much eloquently) and I don't know if he really meant it, but I emailed him back right away saying "Well actuallllllly..." and told him how I'd be near Chicago for the entirety of winter break and we ended up spending like 5 hours wandering around the modern wing of the Art Institute talking about our opinions on what we saw and what we thought in general and it was a really amazing experience.)

So... copyright issues???

Also, what if I consider a website version of two handbound books I made to have perhaps become, at this point, part of the books in some way I can't explain? http://techhouse.org/~amanda/vol1vol2/

Wow, talk about opening a can of worms...

First off I don't see any problem with cataloging a book you don't own the copyright to. Mean I don't own the copyright to anything I have cataloged. (Well I sort of do on one book, but not really and that's an edge case, and the book is... well let's drop that.) Either way they are "legitimate". I mean if people can catalog books that don't exist yet and put them on their wish list and call that legitimate, I don't see any problem at all.

Now how to catalog them...I really don't know. Maybe check with this group http://www.librarything.com/groups/bookarts the admin of this group might know how to catalog hand made books. I am not sure what their stance on this is.

As to the web base version of books.

But, first off is the first picture in volume one the student dorm build at Brown University, in Rhode Island? Some of those houses look familiar.

So can you catalog a website version of a book. Why not catalog the actual book and then in the comments add the link to the web base version of the book. If there is no actual book representative of web base version, I am not brave enough to catalog that. I am not sure how well this will pass the SPAM removal process. Anything with URL in the title, author or review will get marked as possible SPAM. I guess still catalog the book and just keep the URL in the comments only.

There's certainly no issue to cataloging a book for which you don't have the copyright. Completely irrelevant.

You can catalog it using the Add Manual link at the bottom of the Add Books page. Access it by clicking on the Add Books tab at the top of the page. You will get sent to a blank Edit Book page. Simply fill in what information you can. All that's needed is the title and the author, but it would be nice if you fill in whatever other info you have.

If you have more than one copy of the same book, you can catalog it multiple times, which will make your LT book count more precise, or simply put the correct number under "number of copies" on the Edit Book page.

The easiest way to enter more than one copy of the same book manually is to open two browser windows or tabs and copy and paste from one Add manually Edit book page to another.

"If there is no actual book representative of web base version, I am not brave enough to catalog that. I am not sure how well this will pass the SPAM removal process."

Ohhhh, there are definitely physical copies. My god it took forever to make them. I mean making these 2 books, even leaving the website out of it entirely, was the most time-consuming piece of art I've ever done. Longer than entire renaissance outfits whose patterns I drafted from scratch to fit my sister's measurements and then sewed largely by hand. Longer than a series of 5 pieces of complex modular origami each made from 8 squares of paper - paper which I made myself, measured and cut into squares myself, and used not only for the origami but also as the base for 5 corresponding drawings.

Some info on the physical books is on one of the pages of the website, a page which also confirms that yes, the images are of Brown & Providence (in fact the server that the website is on is owned by a Brown student organization that I was a part of while I was there): http://techhouse.org/~amanda/vol1vol2/b/b.htm

But the information given on that page linked to above doesn't tell how obsessively exact I was about everything. There are ribbons running down the spine of each book and I couldn't find a ribbon I liked in a color I liked so I bought a ivory ribbon and brown fabric dye and dyed the ribbon in small pieces b/c I knew it would take multiple tries to figure out how much dye powder to add to get the color just how I wanted it.

More copyright conundrums...

I get that it's ok to list books that you don't own the copyright to, but what if NO ONE does? What if THERE IS NO AUTHOR? If I took a bunch of random images I liked and made a book out of them, then even IF those images were all created by the same artist, that artist did not decide which images to include and which to leave out, nor what order they should appear in, etc. I am not the author because I did not create the content... I guess I'm an EDITOR. Ok, lots of books have editors instead of authors, BUT the thing is, the book contains materials that ARE copyrighted, which I have included WITHOUT PERMISSION from the copyright owner(s). If the book is just for my own personal use that's all ok, but listing the book on this site seems sketchy to me somehow...

38AnnieMod
Avr 4, 2012, 6:51 pm

But you are simply listing a description of the book - you are not posting the book, you are not offering it for download, sale or whatever...

39staffordcastle
Avr 4, 2012, 6:53 pm

Well, if it really bothers you, don't do it! There's no reason you should be uncomfortable about including things; you don't HAVE to put anything in if you don't want to!
