I'm trying to find a murder mystery which I think was of the hard boiled detective genre. The only line I can remember went something like this "I was feeling very good that morning. I had portrait of Madison in my wallet."
Madison is on the $5000 bill and since $5000 bills were withdrawn from U.S. circulation in 1969 the book would have to have been written before then. I'm reasonably sure that I read the book either in the late 1960's or the early '70's.

It's The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler, for certain.

I've got 50p and a couple of chocolate limes in my pocket, not quite as cool as Marlowe, sigh.
