Have just started this and already I'm spooked! The stories are arranged chronologically, from 1829 to 1981, and I was pleasantly surprised how creepy I found the earliest story, 'The Tapestried Chamber' by Sir Walter Scott. I recommend the book, but would also like to know if Sir Walter Scott wrote any other ghost stories (I'm assuming not too many if he did, as I couldn't find a book).

Thanks for passing that on! The book was already on my Xmas list and it's good to know you're enjoying it so much. Maybe I'll bump it up a place or two so's Santa can't miss it.

Well worth a read but did notice two things. There's NO DICKENS! And it's a little light on stories from 1820 to 1890 - the bulk of stories are from the 1890s to the 1930s, which is when the genre was at its peak. I would have preferred a more even spread of stories over time but so far I have no complaints about the quality of the stories.
